Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

I also burn very easily and I love the Neutrogena brand. It's a dry feel sunscreen when you apply it and it never feels slimy when it gets really hot out. I also apply Lubriderm lotion with spf of 15 after showering and before I even think about applying sunscreen.

I don't burn easy but I have a teacher who does, and when it starts to get nice out he always reminds us to wear our sunscreen! But the little gem of advice that he gives us that no one else does, make sure you apply it in advance of going out in the sun. So many people apply sunscreen once they get to the beach, but it needs time to get into your skin to be fully effective. So don't have it be your last step in the getting ready process. I think it should be on about 30 minutes before you walk out the door.

I like the rashgaurd swimsuits for my kids with the UV protection. I am going to order one for me and my oldest daughter this year too. They work so well!

good luck! My daughters are both redheaded frecklefaces. I swear they are the whitest kids on the planet Earth. I apply 50 sunscreen every hour and make sure they stand in the shade whenever possible. Besides walking from attraction to attraction, staying out of the sun is very doable in WDW.

Have a great time!

Good thread. I also burned last year and have been looking for ways to stop that from happening this time. Has anybody ever tried the hats with sun protection? QVC sells a nice one (Dr. something or other I think) that I'm thinking about ordering.

my dad is audourn haired and very pale skin w/ freckles, evan though i do have dark hair, i have very simular skin to my dad, we both use a sun lotion called P25, i dont know about over in america but over in england we can buy it in most pharmacy's and also in airports. you put it on once at the beginning of the day and it protects you all day long, its completely waterproof and we both completely swear by it.

I was very unsure to start with but i now love it. it protects so well...my dad has used it in some very hot places, (india, mexico, egypt) i would very much recommend it! i will deffinatly be using it.

it is quite expensive put its like an oil based product so it does last, (one of the larger bottles usually lasts 3 of us the whole 2 weeks and we arnt small people)

one think that you should take note, you do need it putting on an hour before it actually protects and it takes that long to soak into your skin, you cant wear many clothes while it is soaking in because it may wipe off, i just usually sit in my underwear and read a book.

a little bit of messing about at the begining of the day is well worth it in my opinion because we can then practically forget about it, i do usually put more sun protective lip balm and maybe on the rare occasion a lil tiny bit of sun cream on my cheekbones but thats it! (and it gets evan the fareset people a great tan!)

hope this helped x

I use Neutrogena's spray on sun block SPF 50. It's got a cooling sensation to it as well and easy to apply. I also wear capri's and t-shirts, hats and sunglasses. Carry water everywhere, esp. when going to the Animal Kingdom. It seems to be way hotter there. We went in September one time and I thought I was going to die!

My DM is very light skinned and has blonde hair. She also burns really easy. The best bet is to apply 30 mins before you go out. Also like Oldmom said anything over spf 35 isn't any better than spf 30. The number is just a percentage of how much more sun protection than you already have and if you apply right(thick) spf 30 is all you need. My mom swears by Waterbabies spf 50 and I have always used it for my children. I think it works great another great one is Blue Lizard(I actually only use this now) spf 30+, the bottle actually turns blue in UV light. I actually started using this 2 years ago and it works great, my mom has used it too and she hasn't gotten burned yet. So, I would go with a large hat, sunglasses, Waterbabies spf50/Blue Lizard spf30+, lip balm, sunscreen for your nose(sticks work great-I also apply it to my girls cheeks) & lots & lots of H20!! Don't forget to apply 30 mins before you go out in the sun, it will absorb better. Put it on right after your morning shower and reapply about every couple of hours(nice & thick). Blue Lizard also makes a great face and they are non-greasy and don't have an odor. Here is there website.

Good luck!!

I agree - I was amazed when the pediatrician actually showed my the appropriate amount to use for each child! We also reapply frequently, avoid being out in the sun between noon and 4 or so. The light-colored clothing helps - LL Bean has some great sun-protective clothing you may want to look into. Hats are a must for us all, too.

I'm quick to burn, but here's what I do to avoid getting scorched during summer vacations where the sun is unavoidable: (1) get a base tan before I leave, intentionally spending time, at home, in the sun more often for about 2-3 weeks before we head out (2) Use SPF 45, and be sure to scrub it off & reapply every 4 hours (3) there's no substitute for SHADE, I make sure I spend at least 15 minutes of every hour under complete shade. Those 3 things usually allow me to make it through a vacation without looking like a lobster!

I'm a sun freak. I have brown hair and tan easily but I'm scared of skin cancer, so I use lots of sunscreen and my kids to. We make sure that we use cream not spray one because with the cream you can put a lot more and know where you did(should be the size of a quarter for each of your body part expose at the sun) Coppertone is a great brand (I use the baby one without oil in it) also Hawaiin tropic. But make sure that you don't use the sports version because they tend not to protect adequately against UVA. Also make sure it contains Zinc oxide (yes like for diaper rash!) really help block the sun, you look a bit white when you first apply but it will go away. I always try to stay inside between 12 and 2pm since that's when the sun is more dangerous, drinks a lots of fluid, wear rashgard in the pool and hats and sunglass! And even with that I get a tan and my kiddo too! So that's how the sun is

I agree with all the great advice listed in the above posts and hope they help you out. I'm another fair skinned, freckle faced, redhead (although I am clean shaven like Mr. Clean) and use many of the tips listed, i.e. applying before going out, applying liberal amounts of sun screen, still trying to stay in shade as possible and reapplying sunscreen often.

Another thing to consider is to apply to all areas exposed to the sun. Last year while in WDW on one of our days off, we went to Cocoa beach and played in the surf. I didn't think about my feet since I was wading in the surf with the kids. Needless to say I paid the price, sun poisoning on the tops of my feet - swollen to twice there size and a lovely shade of purple. Luckily it was our last day of vacation, so no more marathon walking, but unluckily, unable to drive on way home (sorry hun) and unable to wear normal shoes at work for first week back.

Lesson learned, apply sun screen to all uncovered skin.
