Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

I love SixFlags Great Adventure, Dorney and Lake Compounce. We go there every year. Sure it's not WDW but we know that and we still enjoy our days there.

Re: Disney versus....

They just closed Six Flags Astroworld in Houston, so that's gone, thank God. It was dirty, expensive and the service sucked. Fiesta Texas and SeaWorld in San Antonio are much nicer parks, but still.... no Disney.

Re: Disney versus....

I don't live that close (4 hours) but I went to Cedar Point last year and I will NEVER go back. Honestly I didn't have that much fun, the park was DISGUSTING (cigarette butts, gum and trash all over the place), the staff (not just the high school/college kids) were RUDE and the lines for the rides were VERY LONG (some over 2 hours)...and no Fast Pass type system! I kept saying to my friends, "I wish I was at Disney World!" I think they were getting alittle annoyed

Re: Disney versus....

We live within 2 hours of a few of them - 2 Six Flags (Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville, Ky and Six Flags Great Lakes which is just north of Chicago) Also near to us is King's Island in Cincinatti, Ohio, and Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana.
When we go to any of them, I always compare them to WDW and find them wanting. The best thing about them (other than the coasters that they all have and WDW doesn't) is Holiday World has FREE soft drinks all the time!! Something I wish WDW offered. It's so nice to take the kids and not worry about anyone dehydrating because we're trying to save on money.

Re: Disney versus....

The closest amusement park to us is Cedar Point. I try not to compare it to Disney, because it's like comparing apples to oranges. Disney is really a theme park and Cedar Point is an amusement park and there really is a big difference.

Our closest theme park is Legoland, Windsor. It's an hour away from us, we've got annual passes so we visit several times in a year, it's good, but it definately isn't Disney!

[/ QUOTE ]

If we lived that close to Legoland, Tyler would never leave!

We don't have any amusement parks in Ottawa. There is Canada's Wonderland in Toronto, but I've never been and I think there is an amusment park called Le Ronde in Montreal - haven't been there either.

We've been to Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Water Country USA 3 times in the past 5 years. We like it. It's clean, fun and the food is rather good.

About 2 1/2 years ago we went to a little amusment park in the Buffalo area - I think it was called Pleasure Island or something like that. It had picnic areas and had lots of rides for little kids and I believe a petting zoo.

Great point! I think a lot of people who haven't been to WDW just don't understand that distinction. They tend to think Disney is for kids, and they focus on just the roller coaster aspect.

We went to Six Flags New Orleans a couple of years ago. The ONLY thing I liked there was that they have huge canopies stretched across almost all the main walkways, providing welcome spots of shade. Under the canopies were benches to sit and rest on. Very nice touch. However, if these were installed at WDW, you'd have your sightline blocked. And I'd hate having my view of all the cool buildings, etc. blocked!

We don't live near these, but Dollywood in Pigeon Forge and Silver Dollar City in Branson are our favorite non-Disney parks. Great variety of rides, good-quality shows, and good food as well. Loved SDC's Christmas decorations and shows.

Re: Disney versus....

We live about 1 1/2 hours from Six Flags New England. We usually get season passes because my kids like amusement parks, but they would rather go to WDW. I am the official bag carrier because I do not like amusement park rides. I think that is why I love Disney so much, because it is not an amusement park. It's Magic!

THAT made me laugh . . . a LOT!!! Funtown/Splashtown = DUMP!

We have a little dumpy "amusement park/water park" here called Sam's Fun City . . . it's crappy and I don't go there. There's also a little "meh" amusement/water park nearby called Waterville USA.

The closest AMUSEMENT park to us USED to be Six Flags New Orleans, but that is closed now. So, I guess the closest MAJOR amusement park to us now is Six Flags Over Georgia. (Once we move, we'll be close to Busch Gardens Williamsburg and a couple of hours away from Six Flags America, which in in DC/Baltimore) . . . I can't stand Six Flags though (and in my opinion, Six Flags is an amusement park.)

The closest THEME parks to us are WDW and Universal, which are about 8 hours southeast of us.

Re: Disney versus....

We live near Geauga Lake. It was only Six Flags for about 3 years before that it was Geauga Lake. Cedar Fair bought it last year and really cleaned it up. Cedar Point is about an 1 1/2 from here. DD loves Cedar Point but you have to remember that they're amusement parks not theme parks.

Re: Disney versus....

I forgot about Coney Island! Coney Island is 10 minutes from here, and great. It went through a slump a few years ago, but they renovated the entire boardwalk and added Keyspan Park for the Brooklyn Cyclone's, and it's a great area There's nothing like the Cyclone or Wonder Wheel... the NY Aquarium is great, too

Six Flags Great Adventure is about 3 hours from us, sometimes a little less depending on traffic. I haven't made it there yet but DD enjoys it well enough. She loves coasters. She was just on a physics field trip there 2 weeks ago.
