As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

What a wonderful opportunity to see that. Now are all the ships still there, or just the arizona? I know the memorial is there, but I wasn't sure if the cleand the harbor out. I had heard about the leaking fuel before too. It amazes me that there still is any in there to leak. I really need to read up on Pearl Harbor as I am not up on all that happened, but I know the basics. I do know it was a day my Grandfather always remembered, though he was not there at the time, he was in the war.
The father of one of my co-workers survived Pearl Harbor and when he passed away a few years ago he was interred there with there with his "brothers".
There is a debate that has gone on for years about what to do with the leaking oil. Some say to go down and remove it, but others say leave it as it is the resting place for those who lost their lives that day.
We have visited Pearl Harbor every time we've gone to Hawaii and it still tugs at my heart.
Cheryl, I have been following along and playing lots of catch up but I had to just stop for a moment when you woke on your first morning in Aluani and the views from your room.........amazing. When I see the Ocean like that when I am away from home I think about how FAR I actually am from home, I'm guessing that feeling must be way more intense for you, more so on this trip.
Who knew the traffic was so awful in Hawaii??!?!?? So looking forward to the update I'm catching up on next............Pearl Harbor. I have no idea why, but that is one place that amazes me so much..........that and Anne Frank's house.......I have no clue why, I have never been to either of them but they are both high on my bucket list.

As far as I know from everything I read there, it's only the Arizona and I think that's because it sank almost as soon as it was hit. I think some of the ships that were hit were put back into service, from what I remember.

That amazes me too and it's concerning when you think about some of the oil pollution that's happened in recent years and how many years that could be polluting the environment for. At least here it's under control.

I'm with the people who say leave it as it is, as they're right, it's a resting place and the less that can be disturbed, the better.

It was. It literally felt like we were in paradise. I tried not to think about how far away from home it was, as it would've just depressed me, because I would so love Hawaii to be a lot closer to us and more accessible, as trust me, I'd be back there regularly.

Anne Frank's house is very sobering as well. We visited that a few years on a day trip to Amsterdam, and I just remember how quiet everyone was inside. In a way, it was a more intense experience than Pearl Harbor, because the house itself is quite small (there's a visitor centre attached to it).
Tuesday 5 November – part three: contemplating and remembering
Soon, the boat was coming back over, which meant that we were about to head off to let the next tour party board. It was a very slick operation, and I certainly didn’t feel there were too many of us, although as we arrived at the memorial, we did hear one of the US Navy guys say that it was quite a quiet morning, so that was something.
We boarded the boat quickly, snagging seats right by the memorial, so while others stood on the pier to get the shots they wanted, I got mine from the comfort of my seat!
I got a few shots on the boat ride back…
We were soon back at the visitor centre, and took the walk around the gardens. Although it was only 9:30am, my goodness, it really was hot – in fact, I’d say it was hotter than I’ve known Florida to be this early in the day at this time of the year. We headed first to the Contemplation Circle…
We paid our respects there…
The interpretative panels here were interesting, but I did find that a lot of the information in them were things we’d already learnt from the film, but then again, I guess if you get there later in the day, and can’t get out to the Memorial, you’d miss the film, and at least you still get the information.
We then visited the Remembrance Circle. When you see the size of it, it again brings home to you the enormity of the terrible events of that day.
We walked back towards the theater and saw the USS Arizona Bell…
… before going in to the see the exhibition on the attack. Again, we had heard a lot of this information in the film, but there was a lot of additional information as well. For example, I didn’t realise that, after the attack, Hawaii was under martial law. My goodness, that must’ve been terrifying for those who lived through that.
The tornado they found recently, in particular, was fascinating to see, although I can just imagine their faces when they found this thing!
The video that the divers shot when they were down surveying the wreck was really interesting as well. Apparently, they dive two or three times a month to check on the condition of the Arizona, and to get any artefacts that have fallen in there – think sunglasses, cell phones, cameras etc. from the Memorial itself. Now you know why you’re asked to come in here bag less!

Somehow our reservations got screwed up and we were unable to go the day we planned. We were only in Oahu for a short time so we couldn't reschedule
