Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Looks like it was another great day. I love that you got to see some of the native wildlife up close. Glad your sinus issues continue to improve. Looking forward to the next leg of your journey!

The Jade Factory was very informative, because the artisans who carve and polish the jade were the ones who told us about it and showed us. The Zorbing was a lot of fun--to watch. It's coming up the next post and at least I took pictures this time.

After the big breakup, I never had as much trouble with the congestion because I kept it damped down. I was too worried about the pressure changes on the flights and getting my ears stopped up not to take or use the medicine.

The nice lady at the pharmacy was very helpful and certainly made a good recommendation. I was actually careful not to use that too often, also being wary of a rebound effect.

Thanks--it was relaxing and I also got in some exercise with my walk, though not as much as the whitewater rafters!

As you probably saw, this was my second EF Tour; the first was Greece, which was absolutely amazing. Maybe you will get my previous extraordinary Tour Director, Rob. I hope yours goes well and you will write a trip report!

Right now here in Alabama you don't have to have a prescription, but you cannot just grab it off the shelf and pay on the way out. You have to show ID and they put your purchase in a database. You are limited as to how much you can buy in a period of time. The bill to require a prescription--I understand why but what a pain--died in our largely do nothing state legislature this year. They were too busy making a bad immigration law worse.

I'm so sorry. They were pretty elusive at Kiwi Encounter, too, but I did see several of them.

That's about the size of it! I'm glad you're enjoying the report.

Watching Zorbing is fun!

Wednesday, July 20 Rotorua to Auckland

Our next stop was at a place where you could go "Zorbing". I gather that this was invented in New Zealand. You enter through the center axis of a very large plastic ball that has a somewhat smaller inner chamber. In most cases, this has heated water inside. You are then sent rolling down a hill, whereupon you slide all around the inside of the ball until you get to the bottom. There is a variant where they strap you into a dry ball, but I can tell you that I would never do that, because you cannot move, which means you are going to be going a$$ over teakettle down that hill, rather than just sliding around.

Our motor coach, which is hiding the office and changing rooms for Zorbing.

Oh, and you can race if there are enough people who want to do it. The folks who are getting into the balls with the heated water (all but one of our crowd) changed into bathing suits. They tried to wrap up for the ride to the top of the hill and got pretty cold when they got out at the bottom of the hill.

And did I mention that you can have more than one person in a ball? This of course means that you are sliding all around and presumably into each other.

And they're off!

Picking up speed.

Almost home!

The competitors going back for a picture. Very quickly.

Some of us bystanders. The ball in the background is a model for illustration purposes.

Some of the young folks from the next run freezing while waiting for their picture to be taken.

Once everyone was done Zorbing, we got back on the bus and headed to our very late lunch, stopping in Matamata.

Some scenery along the way.

Very, very green.

We had a very late and very short duration lunch on our own. Sue and I did take a minute to take a picture in Matamata:

Fans of "The Lord of the Rings" will recognize Gollem (AKA Smeagol).

Peter Jackson filmed the Lord of the Rings in New Zealand, and it was near here that they filmed the outdoor scenes that took place in Hobbiton. Sladj told us that two of Peter Jackson's staff who were scouting locations found what they thought would be a perfect location for Hobbiton. It was on a farm that was somewhat secluded, where access could be well-controlled. The two staff members approached the farmhouse and knocked. The owner answered, but was very dismissive and told them "no", and asked them to leave. They turned to go, but the man's son walked them out, explaining that the NZ All Blacks soccer team had a game going and that if they sat and watched the game with his Dad rather than pulling him away from the game that they might get a better answer from him. The All Blacks won and the farmer said yes!

More scenery on the way to Auckland.

We actually watched the movie "The Whale Rider" after lunch on our way to Auckland. It is a wonderful movie, very much about native tradition and customs. And it's beautiful, too.

We got into Auckland about 6:30 PM and unloaded the bus in record time. We had adequate accommodations, though nothing special, which was okay because we would be leaving VERY early in the morning for the airport to catch our flight to Sydney. Our wake-up call is for <gulp> 4:30 AM.

Coming Up: Auckland to Sydney and a lot of rain.

Zorbing - those crazy Kiwis! Can't wait to see what happens in Sydney.

I agree - the Whale Rider is a good movie. And, your story about the farmer and watching the games - I have never see people as crazy for their sports as those in New Zealand and Australia, so sounds like the son gave good advice.

Zorbing looks interesting, though I don't think I'd do it myself. Love Hobbiton. The story about the farmer is great! I'll pass that along!

Oh I'm going to have to put Zorbing on the list of things to do! It doesn't look that dangerous after jumping out of a plane!

I'd heard about Zorbing, but I had no idea of the detail - not something I think.

What beautiful scenery - I'd heard that New Zealand was a stunning country and your photos certainly highlight that.
