As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.

Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

Dawn, this is WONDERFUL news! I'm SO happy for you! Wow, getting to spend an entire year at WDW and make money while doing it, it really is a dream for most of us, but you're living it. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

The College Program (CP) is designed for students to have a work experience at WDW. Anyone who is currently a student may apply and the roles are front line Cast Members such as merchandise, quick service food, attractions, transportation, custodial, etc. It's generally minimum wage, guaranteed 32 hours per week and all of the perks. The programs are anywhere from 4-7 months or so, depending on if you are in the "regular" or the "advantage" season. You can also sometimes 'extend' your program, but you cannot be here for more than a year. While on the program, Disney provides (for a weekly payroll deduction) apartment housing in student complexes for the majority of the students, as well as bus transportation to and from work and various shopping venues. Students also have the opportunity to take Disney classes free of charge while they are here. An ICP is an International College Program student who is here on a special visa (these are specifically created for Disney and are very strict) who basically does the same things as a regular CP, but usually for a year.
A "PI" is a professional internship, but they are also using the term "MI" now to differentiate the management internships. These advanced, or professional, internships are career-related as opposed to frontline Cast Member roles. PIs might be event planning, animal presenter, LOTS of the animal care roles, graphic design, marketing, DVC sales assistant, Guest Relations, and so on. PIs make an hourly wage that is a bit more than CPs and varies widely based on the role. PIs can also take advantage of the Disney housing/bus, etc. A management intern (that's me!) would be in retail, operations, food & beverage, rooms & related, etc. We will make a salary as opposed to an hourly wage and we CANNOT live in the Disney housing, due to the nature of our jobs (conflicts of interest possibly living with CMs who work for you). A PI/MI is 6 months long, usually from Jan-June/June-Jan. Sometimes you can extend your internship if there are business needs and the department really likes you, but a lot of the time, they want fresh faces and perspectives. There are usually some options after a PI/MI, so that's what I'm hoping for (so everyone "swim down" to get this economy back on track!!! )
I told my leadership class instructor today and he was SO happy for me. He knows what a long haul it's been, too. I've really appreciated this class as it has done a great job of preparing me for what's about to come.
We had class at the Magic Kingdom today. What a classroom! I got to go in the utilidors for the first time, which was pretty cool. Most of the class was on Main Street and in Liberty Square, however. It was fantastic and I learned a lot, not just about MK, but "storytelling" and how it applies to leadership. Lots of food for thought!
I finally got my haircut this afternoon. I love the salon I've found and the stylist is from not far from me back in Ohio! She does an awesome job and it feels like a mini-spa day when I go.
Tomorrow is back to work. I have a meeting, then I'll be in games money room the rest of the day. Hard to believe I only have3 weeks of work left in Dinoland...

Teresa, some schools give credit for the CP, esp if the student takes some Disney classes as many of them are accredited. It's a school-by-school thing, though so she'd have to look into it. The other option is to continue with online coursework. A lot of students save some of the less rigorous classes for online. The CP program will block off a 4 hour period of time in the schedule for each class (up to 2) to dedicate to studies.

Dawn - Congratulations on the MI! That is wonderful news! I am so glad that they recognized all of your hard work. I hope we get a chance to meet during Decade of Dreams.
I've been a closet fan of this post since the beginning. I stumbled across it while trying to order some more of your great tye-dyed Mickey shirts. My wife home schools and I know how tough that can be by itself, but than to add in all of your other drama and work. You are a strong and inspirational lady and you have developed quite a following. Your victory is a victory for us all because now our "Truman Show" has been extended for another 6 months. Congrats to you and your lucky daughters. I hope the older ones are taking notes on how to win in life. As Dave Ramsey would say, " you left the cave and killed something and drug it back."
