Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Anyone ever done a whale watching trip?

We are thinking of doing a whale watching cruise on our Vancouver/Victoria trip this Sept.
One of my guide books says the waters around Victoria are "teeming with Orcas" and I think it would be amazing to see some. A whale trip would, however, take a good chunk of time away from our touring.
So what to do? Anyone ever done one? Was it really cool? did you see whales?
We are going to Hawaii in Nov, and were thinking of doing a whale trip then (when we have a lot more time), but we wouldn't see Orcas and they're the ones I'd really like to see!
Any advice?

Thanks!!

Re: Anyone ever done a whale watching trip?

I have done several whale watching trips leaving from different points along Cape Cod. I have never seen an Orca as you mentioned, but I have seen LOTS AND LOTS of Humpbacks, in addition to many other types of whale. Last whale watch we went on we probably only saw about 3 whales, but the reason for that was that right off the bat after seeing a basking shark or two, we saw some type of rarely seen whale in the area we were watching (can't remember it right off the top of my head) they are usually seen for just a little bit and then they dive deep and you don't see them come up. This one was feeding and we probably trailed along with him for a good 1/2 our tour. It was quite awesome. I have had fabulous trips every time--I think probably about 5 trips I have taken. I'd highly recommend it!!

I'd love to hear everyone's experiences, as we've often looked into whale watching trips off the west coast of the States and Canada.

Re: Anyone ever done a whale watching trip?

I too have done whale watching trips off of Cape Cod. They have been pretty amazing. If you have the opportunity to do it (especially if you want to see the Orca) I would go for it on this trip unless you know you will be back in that area again. The only whales I have even seen have been the humpbacks...the tour boat was able to get pretty close, too. Good luck with your descision.

We did one in Maine, and we did see a lot of whales! It took about 4 hours though, we went quite a bit offshore.

Re: Anyone ever done a whale watching trip?

My parents have done one in Hawaii, Maine, and somewhere in the northwest. (I don't remember as they did a road trip up the entire coast). They love to watch the whales and brought home some incredible pictures! Any chance they get they have done and will do the whale watching trips. I do believe they have only saw humpbacks though. I would say go for it!

Re: Anyone ever done a whale watching trip?

No, but always wanted to! A friend and I have been talking about going on one the last few years, one of these days we will go on one. I did see whales on a deep sea fishing trip once though. It was really neat, also saw some when going to Marthas vineyard.

I've done it twice in Cape Cod. It was lots of fun. We saw plenty of whales. I was 10 and 14 when we did it, and really enjoyed it.

Re: Anyone ever done a whale watching trip?

I've been on a whale watch once from Cape Cod and it was so cool to see them up close. While I was in Seatle we took a cruise to Victoria and saw a couple whales from a distance, I would have loved to see them up close. I say go for it, to see an Orca in the wild must be awesome

Re: Anyone ever done a whale watching trip?

We did a whale watch about 10 years ago in Kennebunk, Maine. We saw silver sided purpoises and then a mommy, aunt and baby whale. They played around the boat, it was an awesome sight. We even saw one of them breach. I highly recommend a whale watch.

I would love to do a whale watch where you can see orcas. Very cool.

Re: Anyone ever done a whale watching trip?

We have done several whale watches from Cape Cod and they are all awesome. One trip we saw over 50 whales! That was a really high amount, but we have never been disappointed.

I would definitely go for it!

Re: Anyone ever done a whale watching trip?

How long are you going to be in BC? DH went to university in Victoria last year and he knows some people who went on a whale watching tour there. He says that they loved it and they did see lots of Orcas. The tour companies are very careful to say that they don't guarantee that you will see any whales, but they definitely do their best. This tour company is the one we looked at, but we decided not to go because I was too big of a chicken to go on the ocean in a little teeny tiny boat! (Me = Land-lubber prairie girl!)

click here for a link to Tourism Victoria's info on whale watching there.

Re: Anyone ever done a whale watching trip?

I've been on many whale watching trips from my home state of Maine. I have loved them all and have not been disappointed yet. We see mostly humpbacks up here, but I have also seen finbacks, minke whales, basking sharks, harbor porpoises and seals. I would highly recommend it. After all, seeing a pod of Orca whales may be a once in a lifetime experience.
