Disney announcement tomorrow [thread from 9/2010] - Page 6 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

I guess I'm just not seeing what everyone is freaking out about. First, why wouldn't you be able to use PP photographers? Just b/c you don't want to be in the show on the castle? That's a personal choice. It isn't like thousands of people aren't seeing you all day long in the parks anyway. And I really don't forsee that being on the castle for like 2 seconds is going to cause great trauma to anyone. Trust me, I can guarantee we are ALL in someone's personal photo collection inadvertantly! There is no way you haven't been in the background of someone's photo.
Second, here's my take on the advertisement. I would LOVE to see my boys on TV! I think they are perfect and wonderful and would love to share them with the world! Do I expect to get paid? NO, of course not! It's MY choice whether to send them in or not. The way I see it, if Disney can save a few $$ on advertising, they can use that money for other projects or to NOT increase prices on something. If you don't like the idea, don't send your pics or videos. Pretty simple.
I feel like a lot of the complaints come from the lacking of freebies. Always remember, those "freebies" come with a cost. You may not see it then, but you will see it somewhere else (like in ticket prices, ddp prices or eliminations, or merchandise prices). Disney is a major corporation and, while it does cater to families and making everyone happy, they are also out to build revenue and continue the legacy. Things change. I'm not saying anyone has to love the changes, I'm just saying to give it a chance before you start bashing it. This is brand new.
Ok, I have spoken! I am now stepping down from my podium!! LOL!!

My concern has nothing to do with freebies or just the fact that this comes across as tacky (and to me it does). It is easy to blend into a crowd. It is a heck of alot harder to do that when your picture is splashed across the side of a building. I can't be the only one in the world that this is actually a SAFETY issue for. There are legitimate reasons for not wanting a person's picture used like that and it has nothing to do with "I don't like it" or "I want something for free". I asked for the information for very serious reasons. I don't think Disney thought outside of the current trend of everyone wanting to be famous. Some of us have reasons not to be.
And just a little sidenote. I would be surprised if my family is in very many photos other people have taken. I take great pains to pay attention to what's going on around me and avoid cameras used by strangers of all kinds like the plague.

Having a former spouse that was abusive, I can see your point. I would think a corporation as large as Disney would do their homework. I'm guessing their legal team felt the benefits would offset potential liability.
PassPorter's Free-Book to Walt Disney World It’s hard to believe anything is free at Walt Disney World; but there are actually a number of things you can get or do for little to no cost. This e-book documents over 200 free or cheap tips to do before you go and after you arrive. You could save a considerable amount of money following these tips. Perhaps more importantly; you can discover overlooked attractions and little-known details most people whiz by on their way to spend money. Click here to see free sample pages from the e-book! Get this popular e-book free of extra charges when you join the PassPorter's Club for as little as $4.95. A club pass includes access to all our other e-books; e-worksheets; super-size photos; and more! This e-book is also available for separate purchase in the PassPorter Online Store for just $5.95.
I also assume people can opt out. Disney doesn't want to upset guests. But for those who choose to participate, I am sure it will be fun to see your picture on the castle.
You pretty much said what I have been thinking since the announcement was first made. Glad I am not the only one who sees things this way!

This is my understanding as well. I can't imagine that they are going to just take your photo in the park and then put it in the show at the end of the day without asking. As with many other things they do, there would need to be some sort of a release to use your likeness type deal they would have to do.

That's only for the pictures, videos or stories that you upload to the new Let the Memories Begin website.
The pictures that will be used on the castle during the nighttime show each night are supposed to be photos taken by PhotoPass photographers of guests that were in the parks that day.

An opt-out option is fine. But I'd like to see where that is said. Just for my peace of mind. Probably would have been better had they done an opt-in option instead. They would have had no shortage of people agree and those that have concerns wouldn't need to worry about it.

Being that this promotion was just announced and will not even start until after the first of the year, no more information about the parks part of it has even been released. I am sure as the time gets closer, they will release more ins and outs of how the parks photos work.
From the Disney Parks blog:
Quote:
In both locations, Disney PhotoPass photographers will provide images of guests shot during the day to be shared on the icons. While we’re still working on the show details, producers estimate as many as 500 photos will be shown in each location every day
The only part of the promotion going right now is the website, which is made up of photos and videos that are voluntarily sent in by people so if that part isn't something that anyone wants to participate in, then you don't have to. When it comes to this part of the promo, it is entirely up to the individual whether or not they want to submit their photos.
ETA: I don't want anyone to think that I am trying to argue anyone into liking the promotion. I just think that this is very new and so many details have NOT been released yet as the promo isn't even getting underway for a few months . . . it just seems like, until more details are released about it, it isn't really something to freak out about at this point.
I like the idea so far, myself, but to each their own!
I understand that. And I sincerely hope they nail down the details SOON. I had this strange idea about going early next year. Glad I changed my mind already. Guess I'll just sit back and wait and hopefully this will not continue for more than a year.
True enough, but many ticketed venues (concerts, sports arenas, parks) include some sort of photo release in the ticket's Terms of Use - no invasion of privacy suits allowed if the TV camera scans the crowd. Now, Disney's still pretty prudent about things like TV ads - they usually are going to try to get an explicit release from folks who are prominently featured. Back when I won Who Wants to be a Millionaire at DHS (well, Disney-MGM Studios back then) I had a very dense legal release to sign that did include a photo release.

I don't mind the idea, my thought is, how do you know if you should stand around and watch to see if you are even on the castle.... which leaves me to believe you will be told? and if so, that would be your "opt-out option"
I love the comment above about WDW trying to personalize disney for folks. I can just imagine getting all weepy-eyed watching images of fantastic WDW moments. In fact, it makes me wish I did not delete the email from Disney about submitting a favorite photo!
If I had to make a guess about having a release, it would be on the back of the photopass card. I bet they will start issuing new photopass cards that say something about that if you let a photopass photographer take your picture, then Disney has the rights to use your pictures in it's promotions, etc. My guess would be the way to "opt out" is to not use photopass during the promotion.
This whole idea about the show has been bothering me so I contacted Disney. There is in fact a way to opt out and still use Photopass. Actually there are three. Attached is the email I received.
Thank you for your request for assistance.
If you would like to opt out of The Magic, The Memories and You! castle
show, you may do so three different ways.
You may let your photographer know when you are having your first set of
photos taken.
You may call the opt-out number after you have had photos taken:
888-267-4546.
You may request that our Guest Relations team call the opt-out number
for you.
You do not need to do anything until you arrive for your trip and have
your first set of photos taken. Then, you are welcome to opt out of the
show using any of the above methods.
We hope you enjoy your trip!
Sincerely,
Sherilyn
Disney Photo Imaging Guest Support Team
I feel much better now and can continue on planning without having to wonder who is going to be left out of the family pictures.
