Forums Closed

As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

90th birthday present ~updated!
AARGH!!! I need your help! DH's Grandmother will be turning 90 on Saturday & I can not think of a gift to get her.. She is probably a size 4 ( try finding Grandmotherly outfits in that size!!) & needs no clothes. She's very very eccentric~ She doesn't need any more knick knacks ( Everything anyone has bought her has their name written on a piece of masking tape on the back so that when she dies you get what you bought her back! I'm not kidding, she's THAT eccentric!) She doesn't go anywhere & I mean that literally she refuses to even go to a a beauty salon to have her hair cut .. She stays at home & only leaves to go to DH's Aunt's to sleep at night.. She is well off financially so money is out of the question.. Also, she is getting senile & hard of hearing..
Now, what do I buy her????? I did get her a small cuddly plush teddy bear.. I figured she probably never had a teddy bear ( times we're tough when she was young & she was one of 9 kids) & she might get a kick out of this. I also bought a cute small photo album & am going to take pictures of her with all of her family at the party on Saturday & give it to her. But what else????? Any ideas/suggestions will be appreciated.

What about flowers or candy or bringing a meal in from a nice resturant. A lot of them have take out. I know she will enjoy the pictures, my grandmother always loved those. Good luck. [img]images/icons/smile.gif[/img]

Your thought of a teddy bear could be a good one. My mother got a really pretty doll on her 88th birthday, and she loved it. It sits on the top of her piano. What she probably wants most tho is time with the ones she loves. How about vouchers for being available when she needs or wants you? How wonderful that she's going to have this special day.

I was going to suggest flowers. Maybe a rosebowl with a rose floating in it. Once they hit a certain age, they don't really seem to care much for material gifts because "I'm just gonna die soon anyways" (My Grandpa says that and it makes me [img]images/icons/mad.gif[/img] ) Just sentimental gifts like photos and the teddybear would probably mean more to her than a really big or expensive gift. (But if you do get her a present, make sure it's something you like cuz you'll get it back with a piece of tape stuck on it - I didn't find that part strange at all since DH's grandma has been doing that for the last 20 years. She says she doesn't want people fighting over her stuff when she dies)

The last time my MIL bought Granny flowers, Granny said " I'll die before they do" So, I was kinda leaning away from flowers... but I did think a cute balloon might be nice???
I'm glad all of you think the bear is a nice idea.. MIL thought I was being silly with it!.

My grandmother (80 years old) has been doing the tape thing for as long as I can remember. She hates material presents. She is also a tiny size 5. This past year I took her to lunch, gave her a photo of her with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren in a beautiful (but not too heavy) frame and a packet of note cards, return address labels and stamps. She said it was the best gift ahe got. (Not sure if she said that to her other 6 grandchildren but...... That is what I did.

How about a corsage for her to wear on her birthday, a balloon is a good idea too, and I also like the idea about taking her out to her favorite resturant to eat too! Or how about a goodie basket filled with all of her favorite things to munch on?

I'll vote for something consumable, too. Fresh fruit, homebaked cookies, anything that says "I was thinking of you" but that won't have to sit around with tape on the back of it.

How about getting her a "Grandmother's Memory Book" they sell them in about every book store. And, whether anyone likes it or not, she probably won't be around for very long. I have been thinking of giving one of these to each of my grandmas so that all the stories about their childhood can be passed down to my kids and grandkids (my youngest is 4). Then, when it comes back to you, you"ll be happier to see it than, say a vase or some other knick knack.

Just a quick update.. Granny's birthday party was Saturday & it turned out wonderful...
All 6 of her living children ( she had 9) were present along with 8 Grandchildren ( about half showed ) & 20 great-grandchildren. ( she has tons of greats & great-greats!) PLUS her living brothers & sister came along with some cousins..
Granny was so cute.. She was seated at the head table with her brothers & sister & was just sitting there not talking to anyone ( she is very very quiet outside of the home.. it scares her going out plus she is starting to have memory loss ) well, after about an hour she looks over at her brother & says "You're my brother, Albert!!!!" It was really funny .. who did she think she was sittng by all that time??? [img]graemlins/dizzy.gif[/img]
I think it was wonderful & touching to have this for her as it will probably be the last time all of us are together like that with her alive..
Oh.. for the gift I opted for the bear & the photo album... She was sooo cute with the bear.. she opened it & kept touching it ( it was super soft) & then turned to DH's Aunt & said " I think I'll sleep with this tonight!"" So, my bear idea was a hit & I'm so glad I got it for her!

I'm so glad she liked your teddy bear! And I can totally see my DH's grandmother saying "Hey, you're my brother" after sitting beside him for an hour so I can certainly picture your DH's Granny doing the same.  |
