The Magical Mystery Trip - Day 3 Part 5 - Cali Grill **Updated 2/14 by Melissa** - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

The Magical Mystery Trip - Day 3 Part 5 - Cali Grill **Updated 2/14 by Melissa**
Why do I always start by naming my TR something that starts with "the"? I'm just not creative enough that's why. And this trip, I'm really not creative b/c I can't think of a great title......yet. Trust me, once you see the gang that's going on this trip and you hear our story, you will understand why I think it best to wait and see what unfolds on the trip.
So, with that disclaimer posted, on with the show:
SETTING: The Beach Club (with our first night at POP)
TIME: Dec. 14 - 18th
CAST: First I want to start by asking you to keep Everybody Loves Raymond in mind while reading.
My family is so much like that family.... don't believe me? Just wait......
First, there's me:
Yes, that's me, in all my glory, doing what I do best (and what I plan doing best on the trip When you meet my in-laws you may understand a little better).
Then, there's my wonderfully tolerant and loving husband:
I knew he was a keeper way back when. When planning our honeymoon he was the first to say I really needed to start thinking about planning the trip and planning out meals and such. Now I was never a planner for trips before this, but once I got started, I couldn't stop....and still haven't. I've been successful in creating an obsessive passion for Disney in him over our 4 years of marriage (note the tshirt in the picture - a gift from a cast member you've yet to be introduced to who is also really good at instilling the Disney love in my man)
Now, onto to the newbies....
First there's my DFIL, Tommy (aka Frank Barone).
Now don't get me wrong. Tommy doesn't live across the street, therefore he doesn't barge into my house unannounced, undo his pants, and watch sports. HOWEVER, he does barge into my house, announced, crack open a beer, and watch sports. He loves his Clemson Tigers football and I think somewhere in his mind he really believes they can hear him through the TV when he curses at them. Our wedding day just happened to be on the day of the biggest game of the year: The Clemson/Carolina game. He made many comments that we better be glad our wedding was in the afternoon and the game was at night. That night, at our after reception party (Thrown by my in-laws) we have pictures of the family sitting around, me in my dress, enjoying a drink and each other's company, and then there's my FIL, staring intently at the football game on the big screen.........I'll have to find that picture, I think my MIL has it.
Next up we have my MIL, Karen (aka Marie Barone)
Again, she doesn't live across the street, nor does she barge into the house, but she does like for things to go her way. For example, last summer she gave me a set of plastic cups for outdoor cooking out drinking fun..... they aren't dishwasher safe, thus I don't use them all that much. But EVERYTIME she comes to our house, she goes to make a drink, and grabs one of those cups, leaving it in the sink for me to wash when she leaves.... So when we washed them the last time Andy took them and put them up on the waaay top shelf of our cabinets, waay up like you need a step ladder to get them. He even commented that now she couldn't use them anymore. Well, last weekend they came in to stay the night. She went to make a drink and went looking for those cups. I watched her. She stared at them up for a minute and went to reach for one..... I immediately grabbed my favorite little glass out of the dishwasher and made her take it. She just doesn't give up.
So anyway, that's the immediate family. Which makes us Ray and Debra. My MIL has even jokingly called me Debra before. I guess she sees the resemblance in our family as well. Only Andy's not the perfect son like Ray, that'd be my BIL, Matt.
I mean look at us, don't we look like we're gonna have a blast???
There's one more person that will be with us on this trip. I like to think she's going to be a great buffer to ease any tension that may come up.....
It's Angie!!! (poohsgirl)
We first met Angie back in 2005 when she showed us around her hometown of NYC. Then we met up with her again at WDW that Christmas during Mousefest, and since then we've just gotten closer. She came down last summer and stayed with us and went to Wilimington with us. She also came down last summer for my bday at WDW. I can't wait to spend some more time with her this year!!!
So, what on earth possessed us to plan a trip that involved my in-laws coming along??? That's a very good question.....
First, Andy and I knew for a fact we'd be back in December, we just didn't know exactly when. We've discovered it just doesn't feel like Christmas if we don't go. So before our summer trip we went to lunch with my in-laws (who will from here on out be referred to as T & K when referred to together). Anyway, Tommy started talking about how one day he'd like for them go with us. So I piped up and told him we'd back in December and that's the best time to go b/c the weather's nice, the crowds are low, and the decorations are fabulous. So he started looking at his calendar. He was serious!!! We had been thinking about going around Dec. 7 but his vacation didn't start until the next week. So we said that our dates weren't set in stone and we could change if they really wanted to go. He was all for it, but Karen wasn't quite all there. She said they'd think about it, she couldn't take days off, blah blah. I was like "lady, I'm a teacher, too, and I'm taking days off, I do it every year. They give you those personal days, TAKE 'EM!" Still, she wasn't convinced........So we went on our summer trip saying things "oh if T & K come we have to show them this" and "if T & K come they would really like that" and that got me excited about the fact I could introduce someone I love to something that I love..... And putting family issues aside, I wanted them to come really bad. So we set out to do some really serious convincing...
Coming up: Obviously we were successful or this TR would be going in a totally different direction....but how did we do it???
My hats off to you, girl - I could never take my in-laws. Although I love them dearly, she has to be the most negative person alive. I'm looking forward to reading how you handle this trip.
But I'm really hoping that I run into you & Andy & Angie. That would be sooo cool!!!
You must have nerves of steel, girl......don't think I could have ever taken my in-laws there! I wouldn't want my trip ruined....that's a drastic understatement.

Yippie. I'm so glad you started. So if my timing is right, it should wrap up around June or July. . . . . . Gives me something to look foward to. I am really looking foward to seeing how this trip goes with the folks. Hopefully there will be lots of video!!

Hardy har har You're so hilarious!! (But also, probably right ) BUT, I promise to try my best to get it finished in a timely manner My goal will be to do it all during my Christmas break. It's only a 5 day trip...and I have two weeks off for Christmas.... I think I can I think I can I think I can And since my TRs are only really entertaining when Andy chimes in we're gonna have to give him a blast to help me
Great start! I've done the in-law trip before, it was okay, they just didn't have the stamina to keep up with us commandos. At least we had just been recently so I didn't feel like the trip was a bust. I LOVE Everybody Loves Raymond - similarities here too - some episodes hit so close to home that I literally can't laugh at them.
I'm sure the trip will go well, it's fun to show newbies around and get their reactions. Looking forward to hearing how you talked T&K into going.
Melissa, I love how you and I both feel the need to introduce our families to the PP world, as if to say, "If you see these people, back away slowly. They won't hurt you if they can't smell your fear."
