Let's see, in Chicago (which is where I am from-- not Illinois, no offense Illinoisans) we drink pop. Since we moved down here I have stopped people dead in their tracks asking for diet pop--pretty funny [img]images/icons/grin.gif[/img] once I realize why they're staring at me that way. I've started just asking for diet--easier that way. I never knew anywhere else used pop!

Also please do NOT pronounce the s at the end of Illinois--it makes everyone crazy!

We tend to add unnecessary words at the ends of sentences such as "I want to go with" instead of "I want to go".

Some people say melk instead of milk.

We eat beefs (something you cannot get elsewhere) w/or w/out red sauce but always w/natural sauce!

Our pizza is either thin crust and cut in squares or it's deep dish and stuffed! [img]graemlins/yuma.gif[/img]

Everyone knows about the SNL skit about "Da Bearz" so I won't go there (please don't believe that the majority of people talk like that!).

I carry a purse and wear gym shoes and sit on the couch.

Since moving to GA:

One thing I've noticed since we came down here is saying "I know it" when someone says "Wasn't that funny?" or any such question. [img]images/icons/confused.gif[/img]

Also it really throws me off when people call me Miss Allison. My parents taught me to call people by their last names (as in Mrs. Smith) to show respect--NEVER first names. It's cute though.

Also people tend to be a bit more polite down here--Chicagoans are friendly but they are not necessarily polite. I even have had teenage boys hold the door open waiting for me to catch up if I am behind them here! No teenager would do that in Chicago!

Being from jersey I had to chime in with our quirks. Where else in the country do you have to know how to negotiate a circle and it have nothing to do with geometry? Also how many of youse outside of the Garden State (have you ever seen a garden while here?) have driven on a parkway (is that an oxy-moron)? New Jersey is the only "New" state that can drop the new and still sound normal. Think about it, york and hampshire just dont fit.

I have to agree with her on that..considerin' I live in Waxahachie which is pr'nounced as Wax.aha.chie, you don't pr'nounce Wax as the stuff you wax your car with..it's kinda like walk, you get the message.. [img]images/icons/smile.gif[/img] On the other hand..DFI is a true cattle farmer and calls Waco..Wacco! And he loves his "soadie water" and wears overhalls everyday. Yes I am %100 percent Texan and asked often.."where are you from" when I am at the world myself..But I can't imagine living in where else!

Y'all know those nut you use to make those good pies? We've always called them "pu-cahns". A "pee can" was something that you had to keep under the bed before there was indoor plumbing.

As Steve said, a lot of folks refer to Virginia as "the Commomwealth" in normal, everyday conversation. The University of Virginia is simply "the university". The university doesn't have a campus, it has "the Grounds." It was founded by Mr. Jefferson (as in Thomas, but he is always refered to as Mr. Jefferson as if he was in the next room). There are no freshmen, sophmores, etc. They are all first-year students, second-year students, etc.

The area down around Norfolk, etc., is called "Tidewater" and folks native to that area say things like "aroond aboot the hoose" for "around about the house." Hair and war are each two-syllable words, "haya" and "wowa". When folks talk about The Wowa, they generally mean the Civil War, unless some other war has already established the context.

BTW, my SIL is from New Jersey and her husband has to map out trips for her so she doesn't have to make any left-hand turns, being raised with jug-handles and jersey walls.

Robin, THe only thing that I can think of is those the sound barriers. They have the dividers in other states so i am assuming that it is not that. Also I just thought of the "Jersey Roll" to go along with the Jersey Left. The Jersey Roll is when you know nothing is coming when you get to a stop sign, so you slow down but don't stop. It kind of like slowing down enough to make sure your psychic powers that told you no cars were coming are still correct. [img]graemlins/dizzy.gif[/img]

Being from the Great State of Georgia. I thought I'll add a few. We always say You eat yet. We never use the word ate. Awight is alright. How about out and about.
Coke is a Coke is a Pepsi is a Sprite lol.
Tea is always sweet and iced.
A mile means a country mile which as already stated can mean anywhere from 1 mile to 10.
We never give directions using actual road names. We say go down yonder bout a mile and when you see the dead tree on your left turn right. Once you get to John's old house(maybe hasn't lived there in 20 years)turn left.

Please 'splain...I have never heard the term "Jersey wall" in my 38 NJ living years. I can only guess that it refers to a)the sound barriers on the highways or b)concrete dividers in the middle of the road. Which one is it? Thanks!

I just realized while I was posting in 'What does your city/town/etc. look like' that we tend to refer to all of Cape Cod as 'The Cape'. As in 'We are going the Cape this weekend camping' -- doesn't that tell you a lot?

The traffic reporters here in DC refer to the concrete barrier down the middle of a highway as a "Jersey wall". I cringe whenever I hear "the car went up on the Jersey wall," or "the truck went through the Jersey wall." Interesting that it is not called that in New Jersey.
