Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Question Fireworks cruise...Wishes? or Illuminations?

So, for our trip in April, DD will be turning 16...I thought it would be very nice to book a birthday/fireworks cruise on one of the nights. Question is which one should I go for??
Has anyone done both? or either? and what are your thoughts

Any suggestions/advise will be welcomed

(P.S.: Kristen if you are reading this you are NOT to tell Amanda what I'm planning...or else )

I've done both many, many times.
Personally, I prefer Illuminations. but, that has to do with the fact that EVERY time we've ever done it, no matter what the weather has been like in the last day or two - it ALWAYS rains!!
SO, either we're on 7 Seas Lagoon, in the open, in the wet and cold (oh, did I mention that the temps always plummet?) just waiting for those fireworks to be over - or, we're at EPCOT, UNDER the bridge that goes to France. That's where the boats all tie up at.

For a 16 year old? I don't know - The globe at Illuminations is really cool from the boat - you get an unobstructed view. And, as a bonus, since all of the tour boats tie up right there, you can talk to the people in those boats - AND we got all of them (I think there were 5 other boats) AND all of the people on the bridge over us to sing Happy B-Day to DH once!!

I've done both and love them both. The Wishes cruise doesn't tie up, so the boat floats freely and can move around quite a bit. We were on it on a windy night and the driver had to keep moving it back into position. The Illuminations one ties up under the bridge and gives a great view of the fireworks and the globe. This would be a really hard choice for me to make, but I'd probably go with Illuminations.

We've done both and we loved both. I'd personally go with whichever display is your favourite. Ours is Illuminations, so that's the one that I'd probably rate as our favourite, although it's a close call.

I've only ever done the Wishes cruise (which was excellent).

My slight reservation about the Illuminations cruise is that the viewing location is one which you can enjoy on foot by standing on the bridge above, whereas the Wishes view is a bit more unique. Also, I'd be worried about not being in the front boat as some seem to have a better view than others.

No doubt those who have actually done the Illuminations cruise can shed more light on this - I can't say I've ever heard anyone complain.

I've never seen the boats tied up for the cruises...I'm picturing wall-to-wall boats crammed under a bridge...how far off the mark am I?

I've also read complaints about the smoke from the Illuminiation fireworks...is this really a problem

Amanda loves both fireworks, so for me I can't lose by picking either one...I just want the best experience since this will be our first

It's 4 boats under the bridge, not crammed in, but they are next to each other. That sort of adds to the magic, though, as the captains all joke around with each other.

We have had smoky experiences, it depends on which way the wind is blowing. But it's never been enough to complain about.

The front of the boat is the best spot for photos or videos, so we usually let the photographers sit up front (although in our groups, it always seems like EVERYONE is taking photos or videos! ) But you get a decent view from everywhere.

Also, when you book the cruise, you will be the only one booking it. So if you just want it as a private boat for your family, it's all yours. So it's not like you'd be fighting strangers for the front of the boat.

The cost is $275. Disney justified the increase from 2 years ago when it was $175 by saying they added refreshments. Your "refreshments" are a cooler of water and soda and some bags of chips. That cost does not include the tip for your captain.

Illuminations cruises are very difficult to get, since there are only 4 of them each night. You need to get up early 90 days from the day you want one and start to call at a few minutes before 7. Call the day before and memorize the prompts, so you can get through quickly. When a live person answers the phone, immediately say "Illuminations Cruise". If they are sold out, ask about a Wishes cruise. There are more of them, and a little easier to book.

The crowding of Illuminations cruises is not bad at all. We've never had any trouble seeing. Yes, you can see the show from anywhere nearby - but you are standing in the middle of a crush and have a hard time seeing around everyone else's heads, kids, cameras, etc.
We've even had people from other boats hop onto ours and we've gone to theirs so that everyone can get a good view.

It really does come down to which fireworks are your favorite.

We just did the Wishes cruise last Saturday night and I loved it. I have also down the Magical Voyage (2x) and saw Wishes from the Grand1. I have never done an Illuminations cruise, but I guess i would if given the opportunity. I do like Wishes better.

Either way, good luck and have a great time!
