Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

MAKE: Kodak
MODEL: CX4230 (Easy Share)

Optical Zoom: I can zoom in on stuff if that's what you mean.
Type of recording media: SD card
Normal recording Mode (jpg, tiff, raw, other): ???
What do you like most: Ease of use
What do you dislike: Would be nice to have more megapixels. This camera was bought in 2002!
What would you buy if you bought a new camera now: Probably another Kodak, with a lot more megapixels!

My pictures always come out very clear, so that's not an issue...I'd just like to have "more power" ARGH ARGH ARGH! (You all remember Home Improvement, right?)

Re: What Kind of Camera?

Make: Panasonic
Model: Lumix
Megapixels- 5
Optical Zoom- 12x
Normal Recording Mode: not sure cause I don't know what that is
Best: Has an "easy mode" to get you used to using the camera before graduating to more involved picture taking.
Worst: Can sometimes be less than user friendly.
What would I buy now? Not sure. Definitely something with more megapixels and 12x zoom or better.

Re: What Kind of Camera?

MAKE: Sony, of Course!
MODEL: DSC P-8
# of Megapixels or film size: 3.2
Optical Zoom: 3x
Type of recording media: Memory Stick/Memory Stick Pro
Normal recording Mode (jpg, tiff, raw, other): jpg
What do you like most: Small size, long battery life, picture quality
What do you dislike: low zoom, shutter speed (too much wiggle) I don't have a steady hand - so I get a lot of pictures that blur with the zoom/action shots.
What would you buy if you bought a new camera now: Tough to say - I'd probably go with the Sony H-1 - still pretty small but with a good zoom on it.

Now for John's camera -

MAKE: Sony, of course (John is a major Sony Addict)
MODEL: Sony DSC W-7
# of Megapixels or film size: 7.2
Optical Zoom: 3x again
Type of recording media: Memory Stick/Memory Stick Pro
Normal recording Mode (jpg, tiff, raw, other): jpg
What do you like most: He hasn't worked with it much yet- liked the size (It needs to fit in his cargo pocket pants for work) and the megapixel range. Sony brand name. He also wanted the large display on the back to show the hospitals his pictures from the scene of an accident/injury, etc, in the ER to assist in treatment.
What do you dislike: size - it's just a LITTLE too big for the smallest size case for protection. Small lens aperture - that's his biggest beef with the new Sonys - even though they still have the 3x zoom, and the Carl Zeiss lenses, the lenses are too small to let in enough light for the kind of crisp clean picture he prefers.
What would you buy if you bought a new camera now: If money/space were no object - he'd probably stick with what he has for everyday - and for taking to specific photo ops, he'd go with a digital Canon Rebel, or other Digital SLR with interchangeable lenses - I think he's checked out Sony's line pretty extensively. As far as his "pocket" camera - I'm sure he'd stick with what he's got - since he just bought it for Christmas.

Then there was his FAVORITE camera, may it rest in peace.
Sony Cybershot 1.3 Megapixel - that's right - a 1.3, early model Sony digital - he's had for years, since digitals first came out - This was the highest megapixel they sold in a consumer camera at the time (non-professional). While the claim has been made that the photos from these low megapixel cameras are only good for 4x6 in prints - We've printed some incredibly gorgeous 8x10s from this camera. It helps that John is incredibly steady with a good eye for composition. This camera was an extension of his hand - and he was never without it for over 5 years, till it finally bit the dust last summer - he's been mourning ever since - and using my P-8 - GRRRR!

They don't sell anything comparable any more, in a higher megapixel camera.

So - are we talking just snapshots here - or do we want video cameras as well???

Re: What Kind of Camera?

MAKE: Konica - Minolta
MODEL:70
# of Megapixels or film size:35mm (yes i know i'm a old fashioned gal
Optical Zoom:70-300 lens
Type of recording media:n/a
Normal recording Mode (jpg, tiff, raw, other):n/a
What do you like most:Its sharp, and has good metering
What do you dislike:its quite a haul in the parks
What would you buy if you bought a new camera now: maybe a point and shoot digital - im still not keen on digital though

I also own an older Minolta QTSI film SLR - a very dumbed down SLR for newbies
And an OLD Canon AE1 fully manual SLR about 30 years old

And a Minolta point and shoot with a 125mm zoom that i rarely uses, although it does take great pics for a P&S

Re: What Kind of Camera?

MAKE: Sony
MODEL: Cyber-Shot DSC-P93
# of Megapixels or film size: 5.1 MP
Optical Zoom: 3x Optical/4x Digital
Type of recording media: Memory Stick
Normal recording Mode (jpg, tiff, raw, other): JPG
What do you like most: It is small and light and didn't cost all that much, since we're usually broke
What do you dislike: It doesn't take as great of night shots as I'd like (even with the tripod, but I haven't tried a monopod yet). I would also like more MP and a farther zoom.
What would you buy if you bought a new camera now: As far as small model cameras (point & shoot) go, I like the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W7, the Cyber-Shot DSC-N1 and the new Canon PowerShot SD550. For a little bit larger models, I like the Canon PowerShot Pro 1 and the new Canon EOS 5D. I haven't really looked at anything else!

Re: What Kind of Still Camera?

Our primary camera that we use for our business and rarely leaves the house is our Nikon Coolpix 990 which I have about worn out with over 100,000 upclose pictures of vintage and antique jewelry taken with it and I bought it used!!! The Coolpix 990 is a Pro camera and not for the faint of heart (has 2 LCD screnes and 12 knobs and buttons on the outside alone and dozens of menu functions depending on Auto or Manual mode) It does not have different Scene selections, you have to set up all the auto or manual functions yourself, but you can save all the setups on the camera and select one with a touch of a button.

MAKE: Nikon
MODEL: E990 or Coolpix 990
# of Megapixels or film size: 3.34
Optical Zoom: 3x Nikkor all glass equivalent to 38-115mm it also has 4x digital zoom
Type of recording media: CompactFlash
Normal recording Mode (jpg, tiff, raw, other): JPG
What do you like most: Full Manual Control shooting mode and great upclose pictures,,as close as 3/4 inch.
What do you dislike: Uses batteries up really quick (4 double "A"s) (Rayovac rechargeable Nimh batteries work the best of all the battery brands) when using flash and with both the top and back LCD displays on! I wish I had bought this camera when it was new!
What would you buy if you bought a new camera now: I am currently getting ready to replace it with a Nikon Coolpix 5400

Our backup camera that we took to WDW is also a Nikon!
It took all the pictures we have put up for you to see. Its a good size for a fanny pack and holds up really well (I got it wet on Splash Mountain taking the picture looking down the 5 Story drop 4 times)and you need a tripod or something to set it on when takeing pictures at night without flash.

MAKE: Nikon
MODEL: E775 or Coolpix 775
# of Megapixels or film size: 2.14
Optical Zoom: 3x Nikkor all glass equivalent to 38-115mm it also has 2.5x digital zoom
Type of recording media: CompactFlash
Normal recording Mode (jpg, tiff, raw, other): JPG
What do you like most: Its a really great Automatic Point and Shoot camera with 8 Scene selections and a Video record mode.
What do you dislike: Does not have much manual control! and you can not buy the special Nikon 7.4 volt batery over the counter.
What would you buy if you bought a new camera now: If I ever replace this one, it will be with a Nikon Coolpix 5400 or Nikon D70

As you can tell i'm a Nikon fan!!! Nikon Nikon

What do you like most: The crispness of the pictures.
What do you dislike: We are still learning how to use all the special effects.
What would you buy if you bought a new camera now: Unsure right now.

We actually bought this one before our trip last June after reading several posts on here. We really liked what Melissa (mestitch) said about this model.
