Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

A Little Tequila, A Little Princess, and a Big Ocean (OBX 7/21 - 7/25/2010)

(We had such a good time on our short roadtrip to the Outer Banks, we decided to go back for a little longer. This was supposed to be the Pre-Trip Report, but we left before I could get it posted!)

You just got home from there, and now you want to go back?

So, how did this come about, you ask? Didn't you just get back from the Outer Banks? And the answer is: “Yes”! We did get back in June from a 3 day roadtrip to see what the Outer Banks were all about and take our little chihuahua, Tia to the beach for the first time.

Brenda takes Tia for a walk on the beach

Tia confronts the Atlantic Ocean for the first time!

We loved it so much, we found 5 days in July when we could go back!
Actually, the first trip was very spur of the moment and only whetted our appetite for the ocean. This time, I had a vacation scheduled for the week of 7/18 so I could attend my family reunion and make some doctors' appointments. The reunion was Sunday, doctors' appointments Mon, Tue, and Fri.
The first part of July my Friday doctor's appointment was rescheduled for Friday, the 16th.
So... that left Wednesday through Sunday with nothing planned... and Brenda suggested we needed to go back to the Outer Banks, and I, of course, agreed!! We had a couple of more days to plan, so we started googling pet friendly motels again.

This time we found one that had a 3 room suite for about the same money per night as the regular hotel room last time. That means we can save a little money by cooking some of our meals... theoretically.

Cape Pines Motel Buxton, NC

This motel is not on the beach, but it's not far from it... well... for that matter, anyplace in the Outer Banks is “not far from the beach!” It is, literally, in the shadow of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, though.

Well, we booked it for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights!

I decided, last time, that Southern Ohio to the Outer Banks of NC should, really be a 2 day drive. If you try to do the 600 miles in one day, you just can't enjoy the ride. So, we decided to stop somewhere in Virginia on the way, this time. I belong to Holiday Inn's frequent guest program, and occasionally get to add points to that account. I just happened to have enough points for a free room at any of Holiday Inns' affiliates! We did some research and found a Holiday Inn Express at the Richmond, VA airport, which is just over 400 miles from us. We just LOVE their breakfasts! This HIX is pet friendly and they had a room for us. Well, my DW, Brenda, was able to get an early dialysis session for Wednesday, which meant we could get out of town before noon! And that meant we would be able to easily get to Richmond in the early evening. From Richmond, it would be about 200 miles more to our motel in the Outer Banks. The return home trip on Sunday we would do in one day so we can spend as much time as possible at the beach! Brenda will have to do a dialysis session somewhere in the area on Friday or Saturday, if possible.

We want this to be a relaxing vacation so our plans are pretty simple:
Wednesday, 7/21:
  • Leave home by 11am, earlier, if possible
  • Quick stop in Gallipolis, OH for lunch @ Capt D's (Just to get in that beachy, fishy, vacationy mood!)
  • No particular plans to stop for anything till we get to the Blue Ridge Mountains
  • Stop at turn outs in the Blue Ridge for photos
  • On to Richmond
  • Find the Holiday Inn Express, Richmond Airport on the East side of Richmond
Thursday, 7/22:
  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • Leave the hotel about 9am
  • Arrive on the Outer Banks, possibly about 2-3pm
  • Go on to the motel and check in and check out our rooms
  • Dinner (to be determined)
  • Back to the motel
Friday 7/23:
  • Probably dialysis on the mainland (somewhere to be determined). There is a clinic in the Outer Banks in Manteo, but they didn't have room. The next place is about 78 miles from our motel, but we haven't heard back from them.
  • We will go to the beach today
  • All else will be determined by how long we spend at dialysis and how Brenda feels afterwards.
Saturday 7/24:
  • Today we will go to Okracoke Island. It is about a 40 min ferry ride.
  • See the Okracoke Lighthouse
  • Visit the Pirate Museum
  • Look up a couple of vacation rentals for future reference
  • Go to the beach
Sunday 7/25:
  • 630 mile ride home
All of this is subject to change and “spur of the moment whims”! There are a lot of things to do in this vacation Mecca, and, once again, we won't have time to do much of it. We are starting to plan a 1-2 week vacation somewhere in the Outer Banks for September of 2011, when we will have much more time to explore. In the meantime, short trips, like this one, memories, and dreams will have to do.

Up Next: Let The Fun Begin!
