Aulani in May! Could use some tips and tricks! - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.

Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

I love coming here when we are planning our next Disney adventure! This time this DVC Family is celebrating 5 years together. We are going to Aulani!

We didn't do any luaus, so I can't help with that, but we did have a couple of excellent and romantic meals at 'AMA 'AMA and I'd thorough recommend that for your anniversary meal.
We're not hikers and beaches don't do a lot for us, but we saw some beautiful ones on the east coast of Oahu and I know Honolulu has some amazing ones, although we didn't get to spend much time there.
I would thoroughly recommend Pearl Harbor, we found it beautiful and very sobering. I'm so glad we did it.
We went to Aulani in 2013 and absolutely loved it there and yes, it's perfectly possible to island hop in a day. We stayed for a week and spent days in Maui, Kauai and Big Island with no issue and, if you like to adventure, you'll love doing day trips out there. On Big Island, we took an open air helicopter tour over the active volcano there and that was quite something! I would thoroughly recommend that to you.
It's probably easiest if I point you in the direction of my trip report, as hopefully that will give you some help.

There certainly is. People were so surprised that we island hopped at all, as they told us how much there was to do in Oahu and, in fairness, we didn't get round to seeing quite a few places - that's why we're planning a return trip next year.
You will love Aulani. We went in September of 2015 for our 30th anniversary. We did t eat dinner at ama ama but did lunch there. Their menu wasn’t really to our liking, but the lunch was excellent and you can’t beat the view. We did the Manoa falls hike and I would definitely recommend it. We did it ourselves not thru Aulani. It was fairly easy to find. Be prepared to get wet and wear hiking or good tennis shoes that can get wet and muddy. I wrote a trip report also but don’t know how to link it. It was called “our trip to Aulani: has it been 30 years already”. There are pictures from the hike and also some pictures of our kayaking trip. If you’re adventurous I’d I’d recommend this. We loved it!! We are actually going back in September almost the exact dates as the last time. I’d also recommend Monkeypod across the street. We say on the patio and shared some pizza. They have a great happy hour deal. Half off apps and pizzas. We also enjoyed the music each night at oleo’s lounge. Have a wonderful time!

Thank you!! I was looking at Manoa Falls for the hike. Most people say that you can do it on your own (not as an excursion). We will be sure to check out Monkeypod, we love finding local spots to eat.

There's plenty to do just at the hotel! Waterslides, lazy river, stories around the fire pit, infinity spa, breakfast with the characters (just my DM and I, no kids). There is a shuttle to the Waikiki malls/beach area which is about $30US return per person vs $100 each way for a taxi! A hike to the top of Diamond Head just to prove I could still do it was a highlight as was Pearl Harbour.
We did not island hop either visit and never wasted a minute.
During our time at Aulani we walked to the hotel next door one night for Starbucks. Have fun whatever you choose.
We didn't stay at Aulani, but the Marriot right next door. We walked over to Aulani a few times for Mickey Bars.
If you want to purchase groceries, go to the ABC Store in the little mall across the street. Great selections and a lot cheaper.
We hiked Diamond Head. It can be very hot. Take your time and make sure you have water with you.
Pearl Harbor is a must!
The North Shore is beautiful so that is a must if you have a car.
The Dole Plantation has Dole Whips. Because these are made with fresh pineapple, they are better than the ones at WDW (but I'm still not a fan!)
I highly suggest the Oahu Revealed guide book. It is amazing and spot on with recommendations. In fact, any of the island Revealed books are second only to the PassPorter books as far as guide books go.
If you can, island hop. Maui is not our favorite. We love the Big Island and Kauai the most.

While we did not get to Oahu on our trip, we did visit Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island and I printed a ton of helpful articles and touring information from that website.
