As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Sounds like everyone needed a bit of a break from sightseeing. Can't wait to hear about the restaurant as it sounds cool.
I don't know if I mentioned it in the update, but it was hot - by far the hottest day we'd had while we were in NY. I think the heat was making Gabe (and us) a little cranky by the time we'd headed back to Matt's place.

I put up a couple of updates in quick order - knowing the chaos that back to school weeks will bring this and next week I do love that Coach is willing to let the boys do things I cringe at - but I still can't believe he let the 38 pound Patrick try the Bungee jump...when I looked it up, it had a 50 pound minimum weight requirement - no wonder he flew and was able to flip around a ton.
We have a lot of festivals in the area - in fact, we were at another one yesterday Meal number four should be up tomorrow afternoon - if all goes well.

It was another hectic/crazy/fun weekend around here. First, we finished painting the boys room
Nolan was a huge help
We got Cullen's bed put together, but I didn't think the side railing was high enough so I had him and Patrick switch. Cullen's now in the bottom bunk, Patrick's on the JR loft and Nolan is on the top bunk.
I had a ton of running around to do with them on Friday. First stop - shoes. Only, Famous Footwear wasn't opened quite yet, so we jogged over to Target and I picked up a closet organizer (the kind that has six hanging shelves) to hold the younger two boys overflow long sleeve shirts. I was able to pick up their lunch snacks too, but the biggest score? A Graco Highback Booster for Cullen - priced $45.00, but I'd been hoarding my $5 gift cards that I'd get when they ran promotions for purchasing two packages of Huggies diapers/pullups etc. I had saved 6 cards, so the car seat only cost me....$15.00
We went back to Famous Footwear, but I don't think the lady knew how to measure shoes. She measured both Nolan and Patrick as wearing shoes 2 full sizes smaller than their current shoes. Maybe she had an adult measurer? Either way, the shoes in their "size" were all in the $55.00 range. I have a hard time spending that much money on shoes that they will a) outgrow before their worn and b) just going to get muddy/abused etc. I made the decision to head the 45 minutes south to a real mall area. We made a quick stop for lunch at Olive Garden and used my gift card from mother's day Thankfully, Cullen napped on the drive to the mall after lunch. We found a Famous Footwear (ironic, I know) after going into JC Penney's. Penny's had shoes for Patrick, but he didn't want velcro, and nothing for Nolan. I took a chance and was shocked when Famous Footwear had shoes for both. I was able to use the buy one get one promotion (score!) and my 20% off customer loyalty card. All told, two pairs of "mikey" shoes (the boys' words) cost $79.80 with tax.
Saturday - we spent the morning at Patrick's first soccer game of the season Of course, about five minutes into the game, Nolan began pouting, saying he wished he would have signed up to play. He'll be starting flag football in a few weeks, and will also be playing basketball this year, so I think he'll get over his decision not to play soccer this fall.
Saturday evening, we headed to downtown Troy for the Festival of Nations. I'm not sure why, but I didn't take one single picture This year's spotlight nation was Germany, so the boys really liked the crafts and learning a few German phrases. We came home and I fixed Kielbasa and home made MacNCheese for Nolan, Coach and I. The younger two had hot dogs and french fries.
Yesterday, we spent cleaning, organizing and getting ready for school to begin today. I really am sad that summer has ended! I'm having issues loading the photos I took recently to photobucket, but when I get it figured out, I'll post some pictures. Cullen figured out how to put his face in the water when swimming, and "dives" into the pool now
Well, for meal #4, we decided to visit the Glasserie in Brooklyn - more accurately, Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Sara now has the website up and running: History | Glasserie
The building was built in 1860, and was the original home of the Greenpoint Glassoworks. The complex house the kilns, production line, docking facilities on Newtown Creek and had housing for the employees
Sara found out through her research that the factory's glass was in such high demand, they were even requisitioned to make glass for the White House. She has prints hung throughout the restaraunt that are made from the original glass fixture catalogs which are housed in the Corning Glass Museum.
We decided to drive because My Mom has trouble with the stairs needed to get to and from the subway, though Jill really fought for taking the bus. It was really, really humid and very warm. At 5:30, it was still in the mid 90's. Matt pointed out that if we took the bus, it would add another hour onto our travel time, putting us at the start of the NY dinner rush...on a Saturday night. So, we squeezed into the Escape and off we went.
The outside of the building doesn't look like much - in fact the street looked kind of sketchy because this area of Greenpoint had been predominately factories, though it's slowly starting to be rehabbed into lofts with an incredible view of the NYC skyline. If you have watched Cocktail (late 80's movie with Tom Cruise). The Uncle's bar was in Greenspoint, and an early seen has Tom leaning up against a fence looking at the skyline. It was shot from the road near the Glasserie, and the producers edited out the river (you'll see why in a few minutes).
Sara greeted us all with warm hugs and led us to a table. After chatting with us for a few minutes, she left us in the capable hands of our server who told us to call him "Eric" because his name was long an unpronounceable. He was from Athens and was a student at NYU. They had a local Brooklyn brewery on tap, and wine from a local vineyard. Here, I learned "local" basically meant anything within the state of NY
Matt, Jill and baby Gabe
I had a light lager, similar to a tart flavored Budweiser. It was very light, had a slight hint of apple and was really refreshing. Dad went for the chocolate beer and said it had a flavor similar to a Guiness. Matt had the chocolate beer and split a glass of wine with Jill. Mom decided to stick with water in case she needed to drive us back to Matt's
The key to this experience - we never ordered anything other than our drinks (and our drink tab was $45.00) which were not unreasonably priced. Sara's chef, Sara delivered the first goodies to our table (sorry- No food pictures) Lamb & Bulghur Croquetts, fried cheese pastries, houllimi fritters, and fried cauliflower with caper yogurt. We chatted, muched and Gabe slept Everything was delicious, but I have to say my favorite was the Lamb & Bulghur
The prices, again, we very reasonable by NY standards - heck, even by Dayton, Ohio standards. Each appetizer was priced either $6, 7 or 8. They weren't overly huge - could feed two as an appetizer. By comparison, we went to the Outback over the weekend and ordered a shrimp appetizer - four small pieces of shrimp and it cost $9.50.
We finished our appetizers and assumed we'd leave after we finished our drinks, when Sara (the owner) returned with a surprise, more food. She and her chef had created a few new dishes and they wanted our opinions She'd be sending the dishes out soon, after Matt & I were given fresh drinks.
Matt said I needed to get a "happy" picture of him, Jill and Gabe:
While we were waiting, Matt and I walked around the restarunt a bit and I snapped a few pictures. First, the patio seating. The lights are covered in glass globes that Nat & Sara found in a dusty, dusty box when they were rehabing the space.
The view off the patio. The large ovens in the background were actually part of the Kiln's used to manufacture the glass. The brick courtyard ended with two huge closed (and padlocked) doors. When the doors aren't padlocked, they swing into the courtyard and you can fall right into the Newtown River It's a good thing they keep the doors padlocked. Sara rents the patio area out for parties, and in fact had a large party booked for that night.
The chef Sara delivered several new dishes, and left us with an index card to comment on the food.
First - Grilled tomatoes with sweet corn, yogurt and Thai Basil. This was so good, we decided we should have just requested two. It was large enough that each of us got a huge chunk of tomato
Next : New potatoes with Spanish Cheese and an egg (soft boiled). I wasn't really a fan of this, but Matt really liked it.
Next dish: Cucumber, pine nuts, rhubarb and wheatberries. This was another home run for our group - all three of these actually are on her menu now as entrees.
Final dish? I heard what Chef Sara said, looked at my brother and said, "You want me to eat what?" She'd delivered "Lamb belly, green tomatoes & lentils". I felt like one of my boys must feel like when I tell them, "You need to try at least one bite before you can declare you don't like something". I tried my one little bite, but had a hard time getting past the "Lamb belly"
We were absolutely stuffed after the grazing feast we'd just had. It was now 8:00 and finally sunny enough to get a few good pictures. Matt suggested we walk around the corner of Sara's building because there was a neat park area with a pretty view. When we were ready to leave, our waiter brought us a $40.00 bill? There was no way we were going to let Sara comp our meals, so Matt and Dad figured out how much it would have been, tipped our waiter accordingly, and left the difference for Sara with a note of thanks.
Up next: Walking off our feast, and because the boys return to school this week I'll probably include a few "first day" pictures as well

Oh wow, what a beautiful place! I love the way she got you to trial some of her dishes as well - they certainly sound unusual.
By the way, my goodness, I hear you about the cost of footwear. I'd struggle to spend that much now on me and I know I won't grow out of them in a few months.
Another great update. The restaurant sounds really interesting. School starts on Wednesday up here. Cleveland schools started today. It's hard to believe that summer's almost over.

The head chef is from the Mediteranean region, Sara the owner is Middle Eastern, and Nat her husband is Midwestern U.S., so that's probably where they got their blended flavors on the menu
Shoes are a funny topic because I collect shoes, but even I won't spend that much on a single pair for myself

I can't believe summer's over either I'm not looking forward to taking Patrick to Kindergarten tomorrow (not ready for the tears that I know will come - from me. He was ready like last month). The nice thing about our early start is that we're out at the end of May.

Thank you! They did a really nice job on their rehab I wish I would have kept the "before" pictures my brother had sent to me. The place had stood empty and unkempt for a long time...there were weeds growing out of the walls

The food was interesting - some was really good while other dishes? Just not my typical taste It was fun because it's the kind of place I'd never get Coach to go to.

ummm...not looking forward to the teen years in this house I made the mistake of going shoe shopping AND grocery shopping all in the same day. The restaraunt was really neat, and it was a great experience. Like I told Cam, I'd never get Coach to agree to try anything in that place So it was cool that I got to go on my "solo" trip. Though, I've been told when he returns to NY with me, he wants to go to the "under the bridge" pizza place we ate at for meal #2

That does sound like quite a bit of work for Patrick. We have a 'fluency folder' we review with Dylan M-Th. Tomorrow his first book report (of 10) is due. And he has full day kindergarten and there are 8 kindergarten classes at his school! Lots of kids there!
I hope his first day went well for him - and you!
What a fabulous time you're having in NY with your family!
I've been away so I had to backtrack to make sure I read all about the Glasserie. I'm going to try to get there on my next NYC trip. I LOVE the sound of those sample meals Sara brought you and can tell I'll have a hard time deciding what to order. I'll have to go with a big group, so we can all share!

Wow - 8 classes!!!! Patrick's school has three classes. Two have 20 students and the afternoon class has 14. I do wish he had full day kindergarten, but I think we're going to enroll him in a half-day enrichment program. Because his school only has the option for 1/2 day, the kindergartners don't have any specials (no gym, music, art or library time). Instead, they get library books sent to them in a laundry basket for use in the room. We do the fluency folders too, though we don't have book reports (yet).

I've been away too This week has been crazy trying to get everyone on schedule. My parents are back in NYC and are watching Gabe tonight so Matt & Jill can go to the Glasserie for a friends 40th birthday. THey're having their party outside on the patio so I hope the weather holds up. Everything was quite good!

I haven't meant to be A.W.O.L. but things have been a bit hectic with the two oldest kids and Coach starting school last week, and Cullen starting today...and I start work today
I finally figured out my photobucket issue...totally self-created, but somehow I managed to load the same set of pictures ten times...yep, you read it correctly, 10 times for the same 150 pictures. So, it's taking me a bit of time to filter through and delete the extra nine copies of each of the 150 photos. I finally got enough deleted to upload the back to school pictures and the room progress pictures for the boys...still have to clear a bunch more space for zoo pictures, and make sure I have room for pictures for the upcoming Labor day weekend fun
I let each kiddo choose their "end of summer" meal to help them start the school year off right. Nolan choose pancakes, so we I made them "Mike W's" monster cakes for dinner Sunday night (thanks for the inspiration Kelly aka OhToodles)
For our pre-bed TV that night, we had to settle for Monster's Inc (Patrick's words) because Disney was taking "too long to put Monster's U on video"
Nolan started 3rd grade this past Monday and his teacher, room location and classmates (so far)
Patrick's meal choice? Chicken - not grilled and with italian dressing. I didn't really do anything all that spectacular with it, just roasted the whole chicken (we stuffed fresh herbs in it - complete with animal butt jokes courtesy of Patrick). After it was cooked, he helped me shred it and we served it with roasted sweet potatoes, pickled green beans and rolls. He choose cherry crumble for desert.
Patrick was raring to go for Kindergarten on Wednesday. I wanted to drive him to school the first day, but he let me know he NEEDED to ride the bus. I took a couple of pictures and reminded him that I was going to meet the bus at the school so I could take some pictures. Coach was getting a fellow teacher to cover his class so he could pop over and see Patrick off for his first day. Patrick's response to all this, "Of course, you've already taken two pictures of me. I don't think you need anymore, but I'll let you think about it before you give me your answer" I did get more pictures, but won't post those because they have his classmates in them.
Cullen also turned 4 last week! A friend on Facebook commented that the days may go so slow, but the years fly by. Boy is that ever true! For his birthday dinner, he asked for "chicky ack" which is Cullen speak for chicken tacos (again, nothing fancy - ground chicken, seasoned with Adobe seasoning served on a soft tortilla). He wanted "dino" on his cake, so I tried my hand at making dinosaur cupcakes.
Here's what they were supposed to look like:
Here's my result
Not quite a pinterest fail, but mine looked more like turtles. I'd also found these cute cupcake tins which had dinosaur feet on them, but because he wanted chocolate cake, you can't see the print. Anyway, I though they turned out okay considering dairy-free frosting isn't the easiest to decorate with.
We let him open his birthday presents after we ate cake (and before we had dinner). We got him a new game for his leap pad - a Monster's U game that works on memory skills. This one will help him with some of his fine motor issues, and was actually recommended by his PT
Finally, today was his first day of preschool:
He was pretty excited in the car, talking about "Cun go sool day" but once he walked into his building, and went down the windy hallway, and up the 2nd set of 3 sets of stairs, I noticed he had tears streaming down his cheeks. I can't say I'm really happy with the situation either - we learned last week that his school was being moved from Stouder to Concord - clear across the other side of town (in Concord Township). Concord is also THE most crowded elementary school in Troy and the preschool classes are spread out all over the huge building. His room is on the 3rd floor of the oldest section - the nearest bathroom is down on the 2nd floor
At drop off this morning, his teacher let me know that they've also changed the end time. They will leave the classroom to begin the five minute process of getting the kids down the stairs, down the windy hallway and out to the pickup zone at 11:15 - so they will be outside by 11:20...which means the earliest I will leave the parking lot there? 11:25. Not a big deal until I factor in the 30 minute it takes me to get from Cullen's school to Patrick's bus stop, which lets him off at 11:45 When the preschool was at Stouder, it cut my drive time in half so it was manageable to pick Cullen up then go grab Patrick. Today, on the fly, I had to arrange for another Mom to grab Cullen after school today (more tears from him when I explained this) and I'll get him at her house after getting Patrick from the bus, but I may need to start Patrick in his enrichment program this week instead of next.
I also learned that the kiddos won't start getting their IEP services "until the end of next month sometime" which is way to vague for this mom. I called the director this morning and was told the services can't start sooner because they're still testing kids who have moved into the district (grades K-4 in that building), kids who turned 3 after January 2013, and helping with IEP placement for older students. I really, really wanted to point out that they'd had all summer to do that other testing, and that the district is already out of compliance with his IEP because he wasn't given summer services. Instead, I hung up really, really frustrated.
I promise to have a more positive outlook tomorrow - I'm just a major, major stress ball right now, wondering how I'm going to get everything accomplished this week. I also start teaching tonight at the college (more stress) and while I'm looking forward to it, I'm off to deal with some last minute changes for my class. I'm going from 8 students with a cap of 10 to 16 students with a cap of 20 because my class is being combined with another section
We have a meeting on Thursday to see if we can get Cullen qualified for Head Start where he'll get additional speech therapy. If it works out, he'll be in Head Start in the afternoon (with the district busing him there) and preschool in the morning. We're also enrolling Patrick in a 1/2 day Kindergarten enrichment program to get the specials like art, music and physical education. His building doesn't have kindergartners do specials because they need that time for academics (a trade off for not having the space to bump to full day kindergarten). I was pleasantly surprised - the enrichment program costs $55.00 week for him to be there from 12-3. Once I start subbing next month, we'll need to pay an additional $6 a day to cover until I get off work.

Well, nothing like reading one of your home updates to make me feel like a slacker and my life an absolute picnic! I don't know how you keep it all straight and get them all where they need to be, never mind working yourself. The IEP situation is so tough-- the services should be in place by day one of school. And really, the nearest bathroom for a pre-school class is one floor down?? The boys seem like they're thriving, though. , sweet Cullen!! I think the dino cupcakes are adorable.
