As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Emergency Medical Needs at WDW
Have any of you ever had a medical "emergency" when at Disney World? I know that I have read postings from a few moms who had youngsters that developed sudden ear infections after flying, but I would like to beging compiling a list of medical facilities around WDW that you may have useed.Let us know why you required care, the name of the facility, proximity to the resort and the assistance that the resort staff provided, transportation issues and how to obtain it, wait time, satisfaction, etc. How about the doctors that actually come to your room-has anyone utilized this service?
I suffered a severe cut on my leg in the parking lot at MGM(I always have some kind of a disaster at this park!), and went to the First Aid station inside the park. The place was sparkling clean and the care was excellent. The nurse on duty quickly accessed the problem and moved me to the front of the "line", but was great at handling the objections of folks that had been waiting. I was very pleased and made sure that management at Disney knew about it.

Re: Emergency Medical Needs at WDW
Suzanne, I don't know that I'd call it an emergency, but my wife suffered a cut at the Magic Kingdom in 2000 while she and I were on our adults only anniversary trip and we visited the Magic Kingdom's first aid station near the hub at the end of Main Street. WOW - sparkling clean and an excellent staff. Things must have been slow that day, too, because she had like a 5-1 ratio of attendants to treat this cut!
We've also been to the Animal Kindom's first aid station which is sorta near Pizzafari - just for a Tylenol run - and that facility was equally clean with phenomenal staff.

Re: Emergency Medical Needs at WDW
We've had occasion to use the "emergency" medical services at WDW on three separate times. Fortunately, none of them were truly serious.
1.
Quote:
How about the doctors that actually come to your room-has anyone utilized this service?
|
<font size="2" face="Comic Sans MS, Arial">This was occasion #1 for us. The first time we went to WDW, before DS in fact, I came down with bronchitis on the trip down. After two days, we called the Visit-Your-Room-Doctor (after 13 years, I'm doing good to remember why we needed him, much less what they called him). He did come to the room, gave me a decent exam (nothing special, but it was pretty obvious what and where the problem was ), and had a prescription ready for me. We blew most of the morning, but had a wonderful chat with our waiter at the Rose & Crown at lunch. (He recommended single-malt Scotch.)
2. DH hit his wrist on the armrest on Star Tours. Nothing serious, but it hurt. So, he went to First Aid and got an ACE bandage to help.
3. This past trip, at Magic Kingdom, DS froze his upper lip to an ice pop. We got the lip disconnected from the ice pop, but he tore it in the process. Off to First Aid, where the nurse was calm, sympathetic, and explained the weirdness of using ice to solve the problem caused by ice. He left happy and cheerful (although he wanted no more ice pops for the trip!)

Re: Emergency Medical Needs at WDW
Suzanne, we encountered a medical emergency in our August 1999 trip. We were outside of JII, the on the bench where the sign is located, facing JII, and my mother told me that Dreamfinder was out. So we started walking over, and my brother who was then in a stoller, started a tantrum and flew out of the seat. He smacked his head on the cement. So, we scrambled for the guidemap (even veterans need them sometimes! ) and found the nearest (which really wasn't very close) first aid center. We raced over, his head with a big lump, to the First Aid center located on the opposite side of the Oddessy restaurant. As we entered, the room was empty, extremely clear, cool, and had nice music playing and chairs to sit on. We told the receptionist what had happened and she said that the doctor would see us shortly. The doctor was very kind, and had a lot of patience with him, and we were given instructions. I swear to Mickey Mouse, everytime I walk by the spot, there is a dent that was never there before 1999!

Re: Emergency Medical Needs at WDW
When we were there on our Honeymoon 5 years ago, I got stung by a bee at Epcot and started swelling up and getting a little dizzy . We were directed to the First-Aid center in the Odyssey building (near Mexico). We had to fill out an incident report and a medical consent form but they were able to give me some Benedryl and an ice pack.
The station was sparkling clean, well staffed, and we were amazed at how fast we were in/out. In a couple of hours, I was just fine.
Even though it wasn't a big deal, they definitely addressed my problem like it was serious. I was mortified to have to need them but glad they were there.

Re: Emergency Medical Needs at WDW
Here's a place we have used a couple of times. First in 1995 for an ear infection with my daughter. Then again in 2000 for both kids with pneumonia!
Lake Buena Vista Centra Care
(Near Downtown Disney)
12500 South Apopka Vineland Rd
Orlando, FL 32836
407/934-CARE (2273)
Mon - Fri: 8 am - 12 midnight
Sat & Sun: 8 am - 8 pm
Go out the Downtown hotels road. At the traffic light (Crossroads plaza) turn left. An almost immediate left again into Centra lot. There is a drug store right next door in the same building.

Re: Emergency Medical Needs at WDW
Once while vacationing at the world Teddy had a seizure inexcess of 10 minutes. I hope no one else ever needs it but we used:
Arnold Palmer Hospital
92 West Miller Street
Orlando, FL 32806-2036
Phone: 407 -841-5111
Fax: 407 841-5136
(Sorry had to edit the post, it was a while ago I had the wrong hospital listed in my records.)
They are a level one trauma center and really on the ball. They were right on par with the Boston hospitals we are spoiled by. They were helpful and in constant contact with our nuerologist back at home. Any questions please ask or PM me.

Re: Emergency Medical Needs at WDW
In March my son had a severe migraine & was treated at the first aid center in Epcot ( around the corner from SE) DH said it was top rate & the nurse there was excellent.
We have also used the in house Doctor service at WDW.. ( At DI) 2 years ago my DD got the stomach flu & became severely dehydrated. The Doctor worked with OUR own Pediatrician back in PA in accessing her case & they even had the Rx prescribed delivered to our room within the hour.. VERY top rate . But, if memory serves me correctly there was a $$ charge for the in house Doctor & it was a little steep ( over $100, I think but I could be wrong!) I didn't care about the cost I just wanted my DD better. WE ended up leaving a day earlier than planned because DD was so sick & she landed in the hospital getting IV fluids.

Re: Emergency Medical Needs at WDW
Not an emergency but one thing that I have heard about the first aid stations is that if you need a place to rest for just a little bit, they will let you lay down and rest there. Does anyone know if this is true. We will be going in Nov and with the short hours we really don't want to go back to the resort for a nap. However, my rear end gets so tired in a w/c, it would be nice....

Re: Emergency Medical Needs at WDW
We were staying in ASMu on year when DH was having some chest pains.. Nothing terrible but since he has had trople bypass surgery, we called the front desk who called the paramedics. DH, who is also a paramedic, thought they were very professional, did an EKG and offered to take him to the hospital. The EKG was fine, and decided it must be 'gas' from all the good food, so did not go to the hospital. The resort manager called the next morning to see how he was and was very pleasant..the charge----FREE!
On another trip, I had the worst sorethroat ever. I stayed in the room for 3 days while they brought me soup [Rainforest Cafe and ASMu foodcourt where the chef made it special] I finally decided to venture out to MK. After walking up MainStreet I realized I still had fever. I went to the First Aid Center near Crystal Palace to see if they could drive me to the resort bus. Well they drove me to the hotel. And not just to the hotel, they drove me to our building in the hotel. They were wonderful.
The driver saw me the next day waiting for a park bus and she said if I was feeling poorly again, to call and she would come get me! But I was fine...how tempting was that after a long day at the park.

Re: Emergency Medical Needs at WDW
We also used the Centra Care place mentioned by Don. We were staying at CBR and my DH got an ear infection. They picked him up at CBR, drove him to the clinic, brought him to the pharmacy, and then drove him back to the hotel. On the same trip, we went to the First Aid station in Epcot because our DD (then only 16mos) had a stye on her eye. They were very caring and it was free!

Re: Emergency Medical Needs at WDW
Last May, we ended up taking my Mom to the first aid center in MK near the Crystal Palace. She had been doing fine, but while we were on the Jungle Cruise she quickly became disoriented and very hot and weak. The cast members in that area finally got us a wheelchair for her (the only part of this event that left much to be desired). Once we went into the first aid center they were very quick to get her lying down immediately while I continued to give them basic info. Mom and I were there for over an hour and I have to say I was very impressed with not only the care she received but also how clean the place was. When she was able to leave, one of the women filled all of our water bottles from their bottled water cooler along with instructions to drink a lot and to stay out of the sun as much as possible. Oops, forgot to mention it was just a case of heat/sun exhaustion and dehydration.

Re: Emergency Medical Needs at WDW
Sounds like Disney sure has a way of making everyone comfortable as quickly as possible!
It was that "special time" for me on Epcot day, of all days, and I was having cramps and cravings for Test Track. Not a good combination. So, I went to the first aid center by Odyssey, explained to the nice nurse ladies there what was going on <groan> and they handed over 3 little packets of ibuprofen, lots of smiles and best wishes for a fun day at the park. I tried to offer them a tip, cashola for the meds, something, but they wouldn't hear it.
The place was so cool and clean and I was very impressed.
We rode Test Track cramp free and had a great time. Thanks, nice nurse ladies at Epcot!

Re: Emergency Medical Needs at WDW
Our trip in Jan 2001 had many challenges. One being that my then 2 yr old DD had rotavirus. For those who don't know what rotavirus is it's a stomach virus with 5-6 days of terrible diarrhea/vomiting. It was horrible!!!!! We took her to the hospital at Celebration, which is across the street from my timeshare. It was a beautiful hospital and the staff was nice. They had us in and out in 2hrs, gave her some IV fluid for mild dehydration, and antibiotic because she somehow developed pneumonia?!?!?!? Another time( same trip) I had to use the First Aid station @ MK for a little tummy trouble and the nurse there was very nice and accomadating. Curiously I asked her how she became employed as a nurse at WDW. I being a nurse wondered how you can become employed at WDW in that capacity. She simply said she applied. DUH!!! The heat must have gotten to me that day.

Re: Emergency Medical Needs at WDW
I LOVE THIS FORUM! It seems I'm saying that alot lately. We have to time our trips very strategically because kids are very easily dehydrated. I want to take both down there but have been hesitant because I wasn't sure what kind of care we would get if we ran into a problem. This give me the courage to try. I've always thought if worse comes to worse we can just get them home quickly(ish). Now maybe I'll start checking into the DVC.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
