As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

A croupy night
Jalen woke up at 1:45 this morning with that horrible, seal-like barking cough!! Freaked me out. I ran into his room and gave him some water. He said his throat hurt, but I think the weird coughing was just scaring him and he wanted there to be a reason why. I found my trusty childrens health book and it said to put the shower on the hottest temp and sit in the bathroom for 15 minutes to breath in the steam. So we did. Finally at 2:30 we were back in bed. Of course I made him sleep with me. Said it could come back tonight or any night the next few nights. Scared the bejeezus out of me.
Any of your kids ever had croup?

Re: A croupy night
Poor Jalen! And how scary for you, that's an awful sound, isn't it? Shane had it earlier this year and I was practically in tears every time I heard him cough. Sending lots of pixie dust to your little guy to help him feel better.

Re: A croupy night
Hey Tina -
Sorry Jalen's not feeling tip top!
Jennie used to get this fairly regularly when she was younger - while the shower trick does work - the steam can actually encourage congestion. Our doctor told me to wrap Jennie up and bring her outside into the cold air. Wouldn't work in Florida, but up here in the colder Northern climates, it works like a charm!
Luckily, they do outgrow it!

Re: A croupy night
Yep, Alex has had it twice. The first time it scared the daylights out of me. Luckily, I was able to call my Mom and she said I used to get croup when I was a baby. She recognized the sound and new right away it was croup. The second time he got it, I took him to the doctor just in case. He suggested the hot shower/steam scenerio too.
I hope he's feeling better!!!

Re: A croupy night
DS still got the croup as recently as last winter and he's 15 now. While it does sound terribly scary and the coughing hurts, it's usually not dangerous. We did have to take DS to the hospital ER one night because he was sucking the skin in between his ribs trying to breathe, so you do have to watch for that. They admitted him and put him in an oxygen tent with ventilin. The steam trick works ok, but we found that bundling him up in a warm quilt and sitting outside for a few minutes in the cold night air works best. That's why it usually clears up by the time parents get the croupy child to the hospital. One doctor told me that croup is a child's form of laryngitis. It always lasts 2 or 3 days for DS.
Tina, I really hope Jalen feels better tonight. P.S. Try to get him (and you!) in bed early so he (and you!) can get as much sleep as possible before it hits again tonight. Croup always waits until everyone is sound asleep before starting up!

Re: A croupy night
Christopher had croup this past winter, he had just turned 1. We took him to the Dr, they had to give 2 breathing treatments. After the second one, which had a steroid in it, we had to be in the hospital for 6-8 hours in case he relapsed. He didn't(thank goodness) and we were released to go home.
Now, if he gets sick, or cries really, really hard, you can hear the croup come through. It stinks, the Dr and nurses said he could get it again anytime.
BTW, they also suggested the cold night air remedy and the shower remedy as well.

Re: A croupy night
Hey Tina,
I hope Jalen is feeling better and that you both get a better night sleep tonight.
My DS Joey suffered with ear infections more, when he was little, than the croup. It's bad seeing them suffer with anything.

Re: A croupy night
Wow, that sounds like a sceanrio I bet most parents have been through. Only with our oldest though when he was a baby, but I can remember sitting in that bathroom with him in that steam.
Praying that he feels better.

Re: A croupy night
Oh Tina, how scary. I remember when Colin woke up with it once, scared the beejeezes out of me!! Tried the steam, but never worked on him. Like Marie said, the Dr. recommended the cold air. Never got to try that since it was too warm, but should be cold enough now!! Hope he didn't have a relapse and you got some sleep tonight

Re: A croupy night
I remember that terrified feeling when my little Bobby woke with croup and I was ready to run him to the ER. Luckily, the doctor recommended the steam shower thing and he was better in no time. Whenever he was coming down with a cold, he would get the croup for a couple of nights. Eventually, he would just head for the bathroom and turn on the shower without even getting me up with him. He seems to have outgrown it since it's been at least 3 years since he had it and he's now going on 10.
