As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

The boy at the mall was running around "shooting" people. He ran right up to me, about three feet in front of me, and shot me in the head. Then he ran around walking up to two-year olds and babies crawling on the floor shooting them. I think shooting BB guns at targets or supersoakers intending to get your little brother wet, are completely different. My husband also owns guns. I am not antigun by any means, only antiviolence. I think playing guns is different than walking around pretending to kill children in a mall. That is frightening. I also don't believe that children who "play" guns grow up to be violent. I do think that children who grow up with parents allowing violent behavior are at the greatest risk of becoming our next school shooters, etc.
So I hadn't meant to offend anyone with my posting. [img]graemlins/blush.gif[/img] I was just a little shocked considering what has been going on that a parent allowed their child to behave that way.

I wasn't offended, Jessi! I agree that kids shouldn't play with guns in public... And in private, kids should always have parental supervision... For example, the kids two houses down from my parents were shooting BB guns AT my parents' cat. Mom found out from the neighbors one house over. Where were these kids' parents, telling them NOT to shoot at a CAT?? I mean, everyone in the neighborhood knows Oscar, he has tags on, and he kept to the same area when he was out. Not that it would be OK if it were a stray cat, but... You know?
Oscar is not longer allowed outside because these children don't have the parents telling them what is OK and NOT OK to shoot at.

I have no boys, but my girls all had or have toy guns. There have been cap guns, laser guns, and of course, water pistols in our house always.
My sister and I had all of the above and we never thought to kill ANYTHING, even though we were both taught to shoot pistols and rifles by 8 or 9 years old.
I feel VERY strongly that some parents are just a little too uptight about the gun issue.
Sure, there are some bad people who use them, but our children also have role models that use guns. Police and soldiers carry them. The people at the airport ( I have told my girls, like I am sure most people with children have , that thes people are there to keep our children safe.)
Heck, even Woody and Buzz have guns!! And, if you have ever been on Buzz's ride at WDW, I bet you did not refuse to use the guns!
This is a personal decision for all parents to make. I have chosen what I feel is right for my family, as I am sure you have each chosen what is right for you.

Luckily I have girls who are more interested in barbies and American Girl dolls than guns. But when they go to a birthday party for a boy and I try to find a gift to bring, I always get something NON-VIOLENT. Do you know how difficult this is??? I can spend a couple hours at TOYS-R-Us trying to find something that isn't a gun, or a violent action figure etc. It was easier when the kids were littler and Matchbox cars were ok, but now it is more difficult.

Fisher Price has a great line of non-violent toys. They're all firemen action figures! [img]graemlins/usa.gif[/img] The big-name one is Billy Blazes . He comes with a Jaws of Life-type power tool. These will be under our tree for Christmas in a few years, I'm sure. [img]images/icons/grin.gif[/img] You can also get an Aquatic Rescue Command Center to save a killer whale! Okay, I'm way too excited about toys for DJ! [img]graemlins/blush.gif[/img]

Oh golly, no offense taken here either, Jessi. I agree that the incident you spoke of was upsetting - that kid shouldn't have had a toy gun in the mall for so many reasons!

Beaner, so off topic but your son will love the Fisher-Price toys. We can't leave a room without Billy Blazes coming and proclaiming the next room safe some days. They are such positive but still active and exciting.

Jessi, I don't think you offended anyone. Your point was well taken that the behavior did not belong in the mall or in public for that matter. I whole heartedly agree. Alli doesn't have any guns yet. But, I'm sure if my DH has anything to say about it she will learn to shoot them safely. DH has many, all locked in a gun room. He uses them in target shooting competition, hunting and triathalon. It's not the gun that is the bad thing, it's the person behind it or the lack of supervision or teaching that goes along with it. This child obviously had a lack of supervision or teaching to go along with his toy.

But I was "shooting" at the targets, not the children in the cars next to me. There's a difference. And as I said before, my post was not meant to be offensive [img]images/icons/frown.gif[/img] . I will be the first to admit that I am overprotective of my 2-year old. And if some little boy is going to walk up to him and pretend to KILL him, I'm going to be upset.

My DS Tommy who is 4 has all of them, except the new ones which are right now hidden for Christmas. DisneynutMary, Agree, and I can also vouch for the cd-rom games for the computer. Just watch the volume if sound scares your kids. The cd-rom games are all based on helping and saving people. Great themes.
