3rd Times a Charm! Cali here we come! My first ever Disneyland trip and PTR! - Page 5 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

It sounds as if you are having as good a time planning this as you will on the actual vacation! I DL, I WDW, and I DCL! DL is the original, and has changed a lot since I first went, about 35 years ago. There is something special about the original.
Having returned from a Land/Sea cruise package this fall, I am anxious to return! One of the suggestions from the PP DCL book is to book the land portion yourself. I will do that the next time. An advantage to the combo is that you check into the cruise when you check into the hotel, therefore you bypass the terminal checkin. You also get transport from WDW to DCL then to MCO included, but you can always pay for it separately if you book the land portion yourself.
I think you are going to have a blast whichever you choose. Have fun with the process!
I totally understand that feeling! I think it would be a great idea to do the Land and Sea because we would get the farmiliarity of the WDW vacation and the new excitement of a cruise. I just ordered the DL passporter but haven't opened it yet because if I decide for the cruise I am going to exchange it. I have a TA here on the boards that I recently PMed to get my prices.

I have been hesitant to go on a disney cruise for a bunch of reasons so I would stick to the original wdw plan - I am going to pm you in a minute for something anyway
talk to you soon
I think they were actually $45 but I rounded up to be most cost effective. Because it was a shorter WDW trip (5 days) and the cruise is 4 days land, 3 sea... I thought I could try and get the best of both worlds by getting my magical POFQ trip and a cruise! Ahhh! I dunno!

A cruise is something I want to do before I die, and we have one booked for later this year. We originally thought a land/sea would be right, but I decided it wouldn't be a long enough cruise, and financially all the food would (or could) be paid for.
WDW is great... of course you just got back.... on the other hand, it is the cheapest option, which is why you looked into California in the first place.
DL is a lot more expensive, so maybe it would be better with more time to plan...
What would I do??? (I just Love playing with other people's money!)...
I'd do the cruise!... but that's just me.
Congrats on your cruise!
I don't know why I just thought of this now. For some reason a theme park just seemed like it would naturally be cheaper than a cruise. Plus I didn't realize how much we would not want to compromise with parts of the tours we found.

In general I left gratuities out everywhere-- DDP doesn't include them anymore at the parks, we didn't have meals on our original DL package, and it seemed easier that way. So just to add a note-- the only price that includes tips would be the ABD. I don't think we would do any excursions and if we did I would add them later. We will only be in Nassau for a day and Castaway Cay for a day so we would probably just relax and enjoy it, ya know? I think it would be cost effective for us to try to put DL off so we can have the vacation we want there instead of having to compromise. But... idunno...

Maybe you could just do a 7 day cruise and not do the land/sea?
I vote for the cruise.
Disneyland was our second favourite thing of the whole trip!!!!
Either do the cruise or disneyland. DO you need to do the adventures by disney package? i am sure you could save yourself some money doing it yourself. We stayed at the carousel inn and suitres. iT was reasonbly priced, great location and you are never in your room anyway.???
there is to many things to think about. Luck you are doing this cause it is the only think keeping me from crying about not being back in the US. I am enjoying experienceing your planning process again!!!!
Jess
There is SOOO much to think about!
I am running into the same problem as when we first were planning a WDW vacation in April. I don't want to compromise but at the same time I want to go on vacation this summer. Can't decide! It seems that I have to stick with Orlando in some form to be able to get a vacaiton this year and next. I just though DL would be a nice change and be more reasonable when we found the Contiki tour. Idunno.

I am dying to do Europe and many of the tours just seem so strigent, I had looked at the Disney one and they do incorporate lots of "family site seeing time" which was very appealing but for the Disney / LA tour while there was a bunch of great stuff I found that in the time you have it became rigid by the looks of it...
Now back to which choice...I think that the cruise is a good idea...this way you will still have a couple of Disney days at WDW and by also doing the cruise it would give the trip a different feel....however, as others stated, excurisons and gratuities would bump up the cost and put it basically back to where you are at DL...
I would do DL....check out Jet Blue / Southwest (out of Islip) to one of the other area airports such as Burbank / Ontario - they are a little farther away but for example Jet Blue flies into Ontario for 189 each way...it might cut down your airfare a bit....
Also they have a great combo tour through Disney - Universal / LA - even with two character dinners and the zoo the price is only $2500 and if you get airfare for like $750 / 800 plue the 400 you have set for food then the trip is looking to be about $3700 which is do-able....
I live in Poughkeepsie NY and my airport options are pretty much limited to what I can have someone drive me to (Newburgh, White Plains, Laguardia, JFK) but I looked into all my options. I end up paying a driver the difference I save by going to a different airport. There is no magical express either so that knocks up transportation as well. I looked into the CityPass and renting a car. I just cant decide. I think the ABD is amazing! Jim Hensen studios... instead Walts apartments... I just think it will take time to convince Rob (or maybe the money to add on a day or two). I want to do the London/Paris adventure someday so I know how you feel about Europe too!

We always start our day off at Disneyland and then when the lines are long at Disneyland, we hop on over to Cal Adv for a few hours. Cal Adv has nowhere near the crowds that Disneyland has so you can take on the park a lot faster. Also, Cal Adv opens later and closes earlier then Disneyland for the same reason. We always spend 2 full days at Disneyland and combo day with CA Adv and Disneyland.
I personally do not recommend the Character meals in the parks, instead go to goofy's kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel, well worth it! In the park character meal is crazy mad!
Thanks for the tips I will catalog them away. I seem to hear the same things you mentioned... that the value of a park hopper goes up at DL when you can literally walk from one park to another!

That stinks! I was looking at LAX and Long Beach closest because I can get direct flights there. I usually fly Jet Blue because I have a Jet Blue American Express and am a True Blue member so all my points add up! Yay!
And the tally so far...
My fellow passporters say:
4 for the Land & Sea Cruise
1 for Walt Disney World
2 for Disneyland
Keep the tips, comments and opinions coming!!
good luck on your choice I know that you will do what you think is best
I love southwest and Juan likes jet blue and they are both cheap so I would look into those also if you were to go to disneyland. Juan and I spent 350 going to orlando from nh last year
but good luck anyway
Holy moly, did that come out of left field or what?????? I totally was not expecting to find an update like that . . . . What exactly is Rob not keen on? The price or everything being so structured? If you do decide to wait for LA til '09, I would say try the Land/Sea for '08. I've never done "sea" so I can't really offer you any advice, but I can't see it being bad really. I wish you lots and lots of luck. When are you going to go, if you go back to FL - April? May? Will we resurrect "April Shower, Bring May Flower, a Teachers Spring Break Report . . . . AAAAAHHHHH. I'm stressed out for you!!!!

Wow, what choices! This is really, really tough. I don't think I'm going to be much help, as I really can't make up my mind between the land and sea package and Disneyland - honestly, both would be great and I think you'd love them both. Can you put me down as a half for each?

We usually wait for a special with JetBlue so we can get $69 each way to Orlando which comes out to be like $300 total.

Actually our time frame is late July/early August no matter what... so I can get my ADRs and good deals through DCL or have extra time for savings and get the early discount for Disneyland. Rob doesn't really like the idea of having our every step planned out for us so I think we would have to save money and add a couple extra days. Idunno...... I am stressed out for me too!!!!

Okay... so I know that it has been almost 2 weeks and I am usually on here like twice a day but a few things have changed.
First of all, I don't have a study hall at school anymore so my mid-day visits to Passporter or almost non-existent. Sometimes I pop over during lunch but thats really it. No big deal but less PP time. Also, I have been lurking around and reading some TRs that I was behind on and just basically surfing the boards. I also am almost caught up with listening to the Dis podcast (I am not only 2 behind) since I have been going to the gym more.
Now down to the nuts and bolts of it. My vacation plans have completely changed. Rob is not working right now. I would rather not get into it as it was a big shock for him and, obviously me. I paid last months rent (and will be paying this months) with most of the money I'd had saved for vacation. Since I have never much minded sharing and being honest... it has been a strain on our relationship, as money problems usually are. I have been getting my mind off of everything by peruzing the boards and vacation planning. I was thinking of scrapping DLR and DCL and maybe just going for a little under a week in August and try to recreate my original plans for April at WDW on a smaller budget. This way we could still go on vacation without breaking the bank. I love Rob and I want everything to work out for him but there is a part of me that gets very resentful of the fact that I am working and taking masters classes and he is just online job searching. Hopefully everything will fall into place and we will get to have a magical vacation together this summer.
Sorry to be a downer. Hope all is well for everyone else!

Mel,
I hope that things start to look up for you. I love reading about all of you trip changes. We are going in Sept & have changed our schedule, days, & hotel already. We are still at 200+ days. Keep posting & let us know what is going on.

Sometimes it is those down moments though that end up truly being a blessing...
Hopefully Rob will find a new job that is a great catch that he might not have found if this setback did not happen...
I willbe keeping my fingers crossed for you and sending pixies for a new job coming soon...

You guys are the BEST!
Thanks so much for all that pixie dust! Rob was pretty optimistic today and I am feeling a little low. Tired, stressed, sick... I went to the Doctors today and have some type of respiratory infection or something. I am on an antibiotic and got some cough medicine with codeine. Last night I was up until like 3:30am literally just coughing. Yuck.
Back with more Disney and life updates soon! Promise I will keep you guys more up to date with our planning and whats going on! There is SOME good news... Rob is getting something like $1200 back from taxes and I am getting $1400... and neither of those returns include the proposed tax cuts that we would get come late spring/early summer. So that $600 each could go right towards vacation if we are back on track with Rob working and such by then.
