A New alternative for letting kids carry money around the parks.... - Page 2 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

I totally understand your worry. My daughter who is not quite yet 4 has been earning Disney dollars as her allowance money for over a year now and no way am I just going to give it all at once to her. What we did is we bought her a purse with a zipper. Then what we will do is window shop. Then when she is ready to buy I will tell her how many dollars it is and have her count it out. Then I will hold on to it until we reach the store. At that point, I will give the Dollars to her to put in her purse for us to give together to the cashier. Our daughter is a little young to understand the whole concept of money but boy she can sure count so I think this will help with a beginning understanding. Then during the times when we are doing parade night, etc. I will let her put $10 in her purse to spend if she wants to buy a light-up toy or balloon.
Anyway, I think the way you are going about it is fine. At the end of the day, you are trying to teach your child a beginning knowledge of money. I think sometimes as parents we need to remember that its not actually any one method in which you teach that works for all but its what method works for you and your child that are best. Especially when you are trying to get a concept or beginning idea down.
My 12 yr old has been saving coins for months now. We'll get it exchanged before we go, but I know there is no real way for her to understand the cost of stuff @ Disney. We've learned that if you see something in a shop that you want as a souvenir, think long before leaving it behind. So many of the themed items are only in one or two shops.
I think printing the copied Disney Dollars is great creative thinking. It's great that you are teaching your son about money and budgeting.
I will say this though...When we travel, I help my daughter set a budget and put aside a certain amount of money for each day in an envelope. Every morning she takes one of the envelopes and puts it in her bag (a small waist pack or bag that can strap accross her body). She keeps track of her own money and pays for items she wants. Any left over money is ussually added to the next day's envelope. My daughter is now 10, but has been doing this since she was 5 years old. Rarely has she lost any money and since it's budgeted per day even if a few $$ were to be lost it's not the end of the world.

You're not trying to beat any system, so just write "void" or as others have said, print them in black & white. That way if they get lost someone doesn't try to use them and get in trouble for counterfeiting.
I think what you're trying to do is great. My kids are seven and six and do have a basic understanding of the values of money and how it's spent, so carrying their own "money" would help them further understand the responsibility. Besides, if it's lost, then (in my opinion) they would be out, but not the parent.
And thanks for posting the idea. You've given me food for thought for our next trip!
I too only give DD's a daily allowance of their spending money. If they want something that costs more than they have, they will need to save for it. If they spend at some point in the day, all money left at the end of the day is still theirs. DD was 7 the first time she went and I too was conxcerned with the amounts of "cash" she was carrying. When it hit a "large" ($50) amount, I took that and held it for her, leaving her with a small amount. She made all her transactions on her own, but either I or DGM, or big bro watched over to see that things went as they should. (More of a problem on her end than the cashiers. She often forgot to wait for change, but they would follow her out to see that she got it. And often helped her put it back in her wallet.)
No matter what method you use, I hope all works out well. Good luck and let us all know what worked for you.

My 19 year old hero! Hurry home! (A.K.A. D_Stitch)
Our DS(14) and DS(8) both have wallets that they keep at home to put their allowance and gift money in. When we go to the store, we work with them to choose what they want and they have to work out if they have enough and how much change they should expect, etc.
What I really want to do soon is have a family budget meeting using monopoly money so they can see where all the money comes from and goes to and discuss why we can or cannot buy things we want.
For security at the world, etc., I'm thinking about getting Travel Visa cards for them, and have them track their spending themselves. That way I can remove their KTTW charging privileges and also have protection against loss.
I think your idea is a good one considering your son's age. I know he won't learn a lesson if he loses the fake money but he is rather young to learn that lesson while on vacation anyway IMO. I would have done this with my dd when she was younger. Now she seems to always have more money in her wallet than I do in mine and that drives me crazy (she is 12 and I'm - lets just say older than that with a job )
