Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Speaking of American Girl Dolls.... (small vent first) UPDATED in reply!!!

Shannon (8 yo DD) came home with an invitation to an American Girl doll themed 9th birthday party for her friend. The invitation says that she should bring a doll but that any doll would do, it didn't have to be an American Girl doll (luckily because my DD doesn't have one...yet). Well Shannon found a doll here she was happy with bringing to the party next Friday but she came home from school yesterday upset because the party girl told her that she would "prefer" that the girls bring an American Girl doll because they will be doing a craft that will only fit an American Girl doll. Well I would "prefer" not to spend upwards of $100.00 on a doll a few weeks before Christmas for Shannon to take to this party and I won't be blackmailed into doing it. I can't even buy it and give it to her for an early Christmas present because her younger sisters are still believers (and Shannon won't admit that she isn't even though I know she no longer believes ) However I am thinking about buying her one for Christmas (and was even before yesterday's conversation) so I guess my question is which doll would you American Girl enthusiasts recommend and why? Shannon is a history nut (like me ) so only one of the history dolls will do, she is torn between Felicity (the colonial/Revolutionary war era doll), Samantha (the Victorian era doll probably because her friend (the doll's friend that is ) is Irish and named Nellie which was my great-grandmother's name and she had to a project on our family tree last year so she knows that) or Molly (the WWII era doll). Which would you all suggest for a first American Girl doll, I just can't decide. Thanks!!!

Re: Speaking of American Girl Dolls.... (small vent first)

First, I think it's tacky to assume that every little girl has an AG doll and it's too bad they planned the party so closely around the brand.

That said, I have Felicity, 20 yo has Kirstin, 18yo has Samantha, 10yo has Kit, and 8yo has Nellie. The younger 2 also have Jess (this year's doll of the year, which was my mom's doing ) I, personally, love Felicity b/c I love Williamsburg (2nd fave vacation destination!) I like that whole colonial era and all of her dresses. Since it is a large chunk of change, I'd try to find out what era interests her the most and go from there. Be warned, though, that I have found the furniture items to be poorly made for the price (a sled cost me a tetanus shot...).

I hope she has fun at the party!

I vote for Samantha! I wanted Samanthat so badly as a little girl! But they came out when I was about 10 and my Mom said I was "too old" for a doll. It gives me great delight to buy AG things for my nieces.

I all the dolls and the stories. It is hard for me to choose between Felicity, Samantha and Molly.

Just so you know, Target now has what is called Our Generation which has furniture and clothing that fits the 18" American Girl dolls. The dolls look very much like American Girl but not as expensive - on sale for $22.99 online. All my SIL's friends thought her doll was AG. We plan on getting her a real AG doll when she is a bit older (she is 7 now) and not so rough on her dolls.

Well, first I have to say good for you in not being blackmailed! Sometimes I don't understand some parents and what they are thinking when they plan parties.

as for the dolls, oldest DD has six of them! Yes six, and not from me and DH but from Pop-pop. I would never spend that much money on those dolls. Her first was Kit I don't remember the rest of them but youngest DD just got her first one last Chrismtas, Molly. She is really cute. I think that they are all nice dolls. There is a new one out Emily, she's really pretty as well.

Re: Speaking of American Girl Dolls.... (small vent first)

My oldest loves anything victorian so she naturally wanted Samantha. My little one loves anything to do with World War 2 so she received Molly. You should probably find out where her interests lie. American Girl doll parties are very popular here. I think tigger22 suggestion about Target was great!

Re: Speaking of American Girl Dolls.... (small vent first)

I love Samantha's clothes so I would pick her. DD14 has Molly and DD11 has Kit. I purchased those particular ones because they were basically look-a-like dolls for my 2 girls. DD14 even had glasses just like Molly. And DD11 had a blond bob haircut just like Kit.

But, don't give in and buy a doll just for the party. Or if you feel the need to so your daughter doesn't feel left out, buy one of the Target dolls. They even have some at Michaels and you can use a 40% off coupon.

My DD had a birthday party at American Girl Place one time. We told them they could bring any doll (or any stuffed animal or whatever). A few girls had AG dolls, but some brought other dolls and they all had fun!!

Re: Speaking of American Girl Dolls.... (small vent first)

It is not a good idea to base a birthday party on the fact that everyone has a particular item. Especially one so expensive! What was that mother thinking?

DD21 has Molly, DD19 has Samantha. DD17 and DD13 have the contemporary dolls that look like them.

Re: Speaking of American Girl Dolls.... (small vent first)

between them, all of my girls have all of the AG dolls (there are a few repeats - like they all 4 have Samantha! - and yes, the 23 yr. old and the 30 yr. old have them!!)

I think you are right to stand your ground on this. The dolls are just large dolls, and whatever the craft is, it will fit ANY doll that size.
Can you call the mother and double check? I wouldn't tell her that you're planning on buying your DD an AG doll. I'll bet it's that the CHILD is assuming you'll buy your DD one if she makes it sound like she HAS to have an AG!

Re: Speaking of American Girl Dolls.... (small vent first)

My girls 10 & 7 each have an AG doll thanks to Paha. Brit has Samantha and Anya has Felicity. They got theirs for their respective birthdays this last year. I have an AG of today (Used from E-bay. She was my model. I used to make and sell the clothes.). My fave is Molly and not just because of the new movie.

As far as the party goes, I don't think the mom was doing this to exclude anyone. Those of us who Are new to the AG experience often forget that not everyone has them as we enjoy seeing our girls play w/ them. My girls want to have an AG party as well and it never occured to me that someone might not have one readily availablee to bring.

The Target dolls are lovely, but the kids will know the differance. They are obvious when next to an Ag doll. Not that I'm suggesting you get an AG doll. More of an FYI thing as kids can sometimes be cruel over minor things like this. Better to be awares than oblivious. But the craft will fit any 18" doll and not just an AG doll. My girls had Target dolls first, then Michaels dolls. They never would have had the Ag if not for Paha.

We're nearly the same age, I had no idea these were around back then!

I have no advice, but don't blame you for venting! How arrogant to expect everyone to have an expensive item so close to Christmas. Hope Shannon enjoys herself at the party!

Re: Speaking of American Girl Dolls.... (small vent first)

I vote for Samantha. My DD (10) has her along with Nellie and Kaya. Samantha is the most popular doll and has the most accessories which makes for easy and cost effective birthday gifts in the future.

As for this party; don't be bullied into buying a doll just for the party! Does your DD have a friend with more than one American Girl Doll? That might be a way to go... I know Target has a similar doll called "My Generation" but it's not like they are cheap either. Good luck deciding...

Re: Speaking of American Girl Dolls.... (small vent first) UPDATED in reply!!!

Thanks for the input everyone!!! I ordered Samantha for Shannon last night!! She is going to be so excited!! I thought about it and decided that Samantha is the one I would have wanted when I was her age and she loves history like me so hopefully she will be happy with my choice !! BTW I know it was definitely the party girl who was pressuring the kids to bring only American Girls to the party (not the Mom) but it was still annoying to have Shannon come home so upset over and know that I just couldn't afford to buy her the doll before Christmas But at least she will be getting one soon so we will be prepared if another American Girl party rolls around Thanks again!!!
