Forums Closed
|
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Re: \"What\'s That Smell?\" Our Trip to Maui - Updated 1/24
Wow. Your report is bringing back such memories. I visited Maui in May. We did the Road to Hana and many of your pictures look just like mine! We stayed at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel. Seeing that sunset was something I will never forget.
More please...

Sounds like an awesome time so far and the pictures are amazing! If you took over 200 pictures in one day then I may need to invest in ANOTHER memory card before I pay a visit to the Islands You know how my picture taking habits can be

Great update Courtney!! YOur pictures are just beautiful!! We took the road to Hana on our honeymoon. I was surprised how powerful the ocean was in Hawaii too and also how cold the water is, I expected it to be like bath water. Can't wait to read more, this is such a wonderful report!!!

Wow, I am soooo enjoying your report. I went to Maui almost 10 years ago, and we stayed at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel, and also drove out to Hana. I have some great pictures of some of the people on the trip with me cliff diving. Thanks for reminding me of such a great and fun trip!

Re: \"What\'s That Smell?\" Our Trip to Maui - Updated 1/24
Wow, how slow am I at updating? I promise I won't take so long anymore!
We woke up relatively late the next morning, munched on the pop tarts that we had bought from the grocery store, and decided to spend the morning at the beach next to our condo. The condo came stocked with all the necessities - chairs, straw mats, beach towels, big huge umbrella, the works. Taylor is very fair skinned, so she not only sits under the umbrella, but she is also slathered with sunscreen and wears a big floppy hat.
There were two keys to the condo provided - one on a keychain, and the other on a plastic coil bracelet-type thing. (I'm sure there's an official name for these things, but it escapes me at the moment.) Taylor is ALL about coiled up things, and LOVES to play with our corded telephones for this very reason. She was playing with the key, when the next thing we knew, she was fast asleep...still clutching onto the coil bracelet!
We had chips and salsa down by the water, and even got to watch some whales breeching! They were pretty far offshore, but we could definitely see what was going on from where we were. That was VERY cool.
We headed back up to the room when Taylor woke up, and while she and Frank played on the huge rug on the floor, I took pictures of some wind and kite surfers from our lanai. Apparently, the side of the island we were on is not well known for its surfing, because the waves are not that big, but we had a great time watching all of them throughout the week.
It was at this point that Taylor decided to stop goofing around, and officially start to crawl! I don't have pictures of it, only video, but she was so amused with herself! She kept looking over at the camcorder and grinning, like she knew EXACTLY what she was doing. That's my girl!
We took showers and got ready for dinner. We had made a reservation for Kobe Steakhouse earlier in the day, since I have the Hawaii Entertainment book, and they have a buy one entree, get one free offer in it. We decided to make a stop at Lahaina Center, to visit Hilo Hattie and kill some time before dinner. At Hilo Hattie, we found some calendars for our relatives at a bargain of 99 cents each, and picked up some dashboard hula folks for our cars (Courtney got a heavy-set Hawaiian man in a grass skirt with a ukulele, Frank got a standard hula girl). We had a coupon for a free bag of chocolate covered Macadamia nuts with any purchase over $10, and another coupon for buy one, get one 1/2 off of all dashboard hula dolls, so we made out well! We did a little bit of window shopping from there.
There are statues all over the shopping center, of various figures in Hawaiian history.
Lahaina Center is the home of Hale Kahiko (ancient house), which is a replica of part of a Hawaiian village. Taylor was getting fussy (must be those teeth again!), so we took a little break here.
Definitely NOT happy...
Taylor and I next to Hale Kuku, the craft house.
And inside Hale Mua, the men's eating house.
Frank found a plumeria blossom that had fallen from a tree, and tucked it behind Taylor's ear. To our surprise, she allowed it to stay there for a long time, all the way through to dinner, and WE ended up being the ones to take it out!
We decided to go straight from Lahaina Center to dinner a little bit early, and hoped that they could fit us in. Finding parking in Lahaina is...interesting. There is a hidden, free lot that is shown in the Maui Revealed book, but as we drove by Kobe, there was a sign outside that directed us to park across the street and bring in our receipt for reimbursement. Whew!
We had reservations for 7, and were about an hour and fifteen minutes early, so we checked in and hung out in the waiting area. We were there for about 10 minutes when they called us to a table. Hooray!
We used the buy one get one free dinner from the Entertainment Book, and both had the chicken and steak combo. Dinner comes with shabu shabu soup, shrimp appetizer, and vegetables. We also ordered fried rice. Our chef, "Jose", was hysterical. Being a connoisseur of Japanese steakhouses (my favorite places to eat), he was one of the best I've ever had. We shared our table with a family, including three generations. The grandparents took pictures of Taylor from across the table (unbeknownst to us!) and asked us for an email address to send them to. How nice!
We chatted with them a bit after dinner was finished, and it turned out that they were from Chattanooga. I gave birth to Taylor in what is considered THE hospital to have a baby at in the Chattanooga area, so it was pretty cool to be able to have common ground to talk about. We received the pictures the day we made it back to Oahu.
(And now we all know why my trip reports are full of Taylor, Taylor, Taylor. I spend the better part of my day just staring at her in awe, and these pictures are the proof!)
We made a stop at Safeway for some water, iced tea, and more munchies, then headed "home".
I promise I'll get the next day up as soon as I can! Coming up - a trip around the "north shore", the world's best banana bread, and another beautiful sunset.

I this TR! Your pictures are great! That was so nice of the family to take pictures and then to actually remember to follow up and send them. Taylor looks adorable with the flower.
The last time i was in Lahina was about 28 years ago. It was my favorite area of our whole trip. Can't wait for more of your TR!
