Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Kings Island Campgrounds

I am hearing pros and cons of their campgrounds. I am also hearing they may scrap the campground for a hotel. Does anyone have any info on this and if they are not going to scrap the campground, has anyone stayed here and what do you think of it? I called them and they have nothing they can send me. We are thinking of staying here for 2 days before we decend to TN and stay there for 4 days. The TN trip is a follow up to the Gettysburg trip we took two years ago. TN is another turning point in the Civil War. Thanks again for any and all help.

Hmm, there doesn't seem to be much on the web about this area, either I tried to find something, but mostly it just shows the location and address.

I know, thats why I decided to turn here for help. O well. Maybe I'll be the first to experience this campground for ourselves. Still sitting patiently for an answer.

Re: Kings Island Campgrounds

I am having the most terrible luck with this web site. Either its here or it just goes poof. I'm ready to give up.
The first site is helpful in the fact that it gives me an email address to someone. It is not helpful that it gives zero info on the campgrounds.
The other one refused to load. Still working on that one. Thanks for the links. Will keep looking for more info on their campgrounds.

Re: Kings Island Campgrounds

Well, I don't know that this is much help, but, we go every year and when we went last year, the campground was still there. It's nothing fancy. It used to be really cool when KI still had the animal safari. You could hear the lions roaring in the morning. Anyway, I had not heard about a hotel going in, but that would make sense because the campground is NEVER full and I am sure they are losing money. Sorry I wasn't much help!

Re: Kings Island Campgrounds

We live about 5 miles north of KI (now called Paramount's King's Island), and I can give you some info about the upcoming demise of the campground. Yes, it is being taken over by a hotel with an indoor water park. PKI officials haven't commented if this is the end of the campground or if they will build another somewhere else. Why they are building this when they've gave up on one hotel (King's Island Inn) and have an outdoor water park (Boomerang Bay, formerly WaterWorks) is beyond me. They are still in negotiations with the holding company of the hotel about business stuff. I don't know if the campground will be open this year or not. You can get contact information from www.pki.com

Now I stayed there upteen years ago with my family. It was after the wild animal safari was gone. I would rate it up there with a old KOA. Was looking a little rough around the edges, but it did have what appeared to be a decent sized pool.

Re: Kings Island Campgrounds

Thanks for the information. I am hearing that they are building a hotel as well there. I hope not. Because I don't see anything near there in regards to campsites. I was told last week to call Feb 14 to make RSVPs. So, maybe? They may still have a campsite there. We want to do KI on the way to TN. Does anyone recommend another campsite near KI? If they do go belly up. I have no idea why indoor waterparks and hotels are going hand in hand, but, I guess this the 21st century and I am still an old fashioned kind of girl.
If you hear of anything more, let me know. Thanks for the info.

Re: Kings Island Campgrounds

I was at Kings Island in October and it didn't look like anything was going on in the campground as far as construction. There are two campgrounds in Lebanon, OH (which is just a few exits north of KI on I-71). One is Cedarbrook Campground (which has a Web site--cedarbrookcampground.com). The other is Big Turtle Lakes Resort (not sure if they have a Web site or not). I think they are about 5-10 miles from KI. I've never tried either of them, but they might be worth checking out (as is the quaint town of Lebanon, if you've never been there.)

Some place we used to stay

when I was a kid (OK, we're talking 25+ years ago) is Big Bone Lick State Park in KY. It is about an hour south of KI, but was a nice campground (with pool and playground), plus it may be cheaper than KI since it is a state park. Another plus is that they have a buffalo herd. They also have a walking trail that takes you down to the salt lick. The name comes from the marsh where mastedons and the like would get caught up while enjoying the lick.

Here's a link with more info:

Re: Some place we used to stay

According to my AAA campground book is that most of the state park campgrounds have no hot or cold running water nor do they have showers or anything that resembles indoor plumbing. We do go camping, but seriously, I'm not sure how rustic I can handle it. We were up in Tobermory, Ontario, Canada and they had a modern facility with an out house nearby, but still, I'd like to have a hot shower. Plus I've been told the bears are getting worse in these areas. Thanks for the hint on the state park idea. But from what I'm seeing, KI is pretty cheap on modern facilities when it comes to their campgrounds. I found one in TN, about an hour north of the smokeys and we are going to park it there. We only need a stopping point for a few days before we head on down to TN. Thanks for the help though.

I know for a fact that this one

has hot & cold running water, a very modern (for the late '70's but it may have been updated) shower house with individual shower stalls and flush toilets. We had hot showers every day we stayed there, though you may want to wear flip-flops (never know who was there before you and what they had). All I can do is suggest you explore the link I provided, call both and see.

I know rustic camping. My family used to go frequently to the Williams river area of WV (dad loved to trout fish). There the nearest restroom was the leafiest bush you could find and you hoped there was no poison ivy about. I have bathed in cold mountain rivers in TN (Telico)because Mom couldn't take the smell anymore. Believe me, I would only steer the heartiest of camping souls that directions.

If you are interested, there are several reasonably priced hotels/motels near KI. Depending on when you are going, you might get a pretty good deal. Some do offer packages with KI tickets. Also, in addition to KI's water park, if those sort of things float your boat (pun intended) be sure to check out The Beach Waterpark. Of the two, it is my favorite, but my admission to Boomerang Bay is included in my PKI season pass.

Re: I know for a fact that this one

I saw the Beach Waterpark. Is that separate from KI and its waterpark? I am interested in the Beach Waterpark and what it has to offer. I do know that if I go on line I can get realy cheap KI tickets instead of at the door.
I will see what happens when I call them in a few weeks. I want to do 2 days before we head to TN and a overniter there on the way home. Need to break up this trip somehow. Thanks the information. As for cold showers? Um, looking outside and 10 inches of snow? I'll pass. I still can't feel my hands.

Some more details for the trip

The Beach is separate from KI and Boomerang Bay (KI's water park). They cut their prices in half for admission after 4 or 5 p.m. plus the crowds are smaller then. KI, as of last year, did not have separate admission for Boomerang Bay; it is included in your ticket. I know I can get discount tickets thru AAA here. You may check there as well.

BTW, the showers at Big Bone Lick are not cold, it was the Telico River in TN. The campground there did not have showers (only a "Johnny-on-the-Spot"), so Mom & I bathed in the river, which, even in June or July, was bone-numbing cold, almost as bad as taking a shower when the hot water heater is out.
