Bad, sad stray dog story (long)

Today while DH and I were downstairs, my male dog Cody starts barking in his meanest "get off my property" bark. (He was inside, as was his sister, Belle). We jumped up and rushed to the door to see a huge Rottweiler followed by a nasty-looking shepherd mix running across our lawn. We immediately closed both downstairs doors (The screens were closed, but why take a chance) and made sure our dogs were secure. We ran outside as the two strays ran down our ravine.

Steve started to call them but something told me to not do that, so I told him to stop. The dogs had stopped and were up to something. I ran up on our deck to look down in the ravine, and got there in time to see the shepherd complete his task: killing one of the stray kitties that roam in our woods.

We watched them run off into the back woods with the poor thing in it's mouth.

I am shocked, sickened and appalled

. That poor cat never knew what hit him. How could you not keep your dogs locked up if they are nasty? I know that they may have gotten out by accident, but if you have nasty dogs, shouldn't you be even more cautious?

The only good that came out of this (it's not really good, but a little relieved) is that Cody barking scared little Tigger, our adopted stray (remember him? he's back) who usually lounges the day away in our lawn. I thought originally they had grabbed Tigger, but I found him cowering under a bush near our shed. He must have gotten scared when Cody barked, and took off. It probably saved his life. He's just a little guy, would have been no match for that dog.

I am so upset by this whole thing.

I feel like our property has been violated. I am so grateful that we were sitting inside, not with the dogs outside as we sometimes do, and I am grateful beyond belief that my 9 year old nephew was not riding his bike at the time.

I know you guys will understand how bad I feel (and Steve, too...all he keeps saying is thank goodness we had the dogs in). That's not something I even want to think about.

I hope those dogs are caught before they do anymore harm. Thanks for listening.

What a sad story, the poor cat, I hope this awful dog is kept under control before more damage is done.

I'm so sorry you had to witness that. Thank goodness you were all inside and that Tigger was safe. Maybe he could come in for a little while until this blows over??

I would make a call to the SPCA or like organization in your area. They should know dogs like this are out there.

I am so sorry! I know that gut-wrenching feeling well...when I was in college I had a parakeet and somehow a dog (somebody's dog...it was a nice husky) got INTO our house while I was loading my car, went straight up to my room (how did he know?!?

), knocked my parakeet's cage over, snapped him up and ran under my bed. I was trying to pull him out by his tail, but he turned on me, then took off. We called animal control, but they never did find him.

My bird was my first pet (all my parents would allow) and I never did replace him...it was just too sad

I'm glad you, your family, and your furbabies are all OK, but I'm so sorry you had to go through that!

How terrible!! Sorry you had to witness something like that, I know I would have freaked. I am always afraid one of my cats will get out and get killed by a dog. It is one of my top fears for them.

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words. I am feeling better now, but still a little sad and angry.

We have one dog warden in our area, and he can't help unless you actually have the dogs in custody. The SPCA is closed on weekends and the game commission is only helpful for bears. We pretty much have no resources for a situation like this in our county.

Jennifer, Tigger is not actually my cat. He won't even let us pet or touch him. He belongs to a family up the road, but he is out all the time, and even though I don't feed him, I have found him sleeping in my garden and hanging out on my patio furniture. He's a good cat...doesn't even chase the baby chipmunks or baby birds we have

so we let him hang out. If he was mine, he would have been in the house so fast he wouldn't have know what hit him!

I think they are long gone. DH and I will probably take a walk in the woods tomorrow to make sure, but I think the worst is over.

I always say don't blame the dog blame the owners. People should be more responsible for their animals. We just got back from a camping trip not to long ago. One of the rules of the campground is dogs must be on a leash at all times. Well of course their are always those who chose not to care. There were dogs running lose all over the place. Some people just don't care.

That's terrible! We have a rottwiler in our neighboorhood as well. The owner thinks it's perfectly okay to have it running around my 1 year old without a leash!

It burns me up!!

Sue, that is just terrible. I can't imagine how awful that must have been for both you and Steve. Thank goodness your nephew wasn't out! Be careful if you walk out in that area.
