Escaping The Brutal Northeast For Sunny, Warm Florida and Fun! Completed 7/12 - Page 39 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Welcome! We're happy you've found the PassPorter Community -- the friendliest place to plan your vacation to Walt Disney World, Disney Cruise Line, Disneyland, and the world in general! It was a great day in the MK! How can you not like a Dole Whip and something must be wrong with you, if you don't! The perfect ending to my day spent in the MK!

What a great day at MK! You got so much done!! Love the pics!
It certainly was and glad I was able to ride a lot of attractions, even though the crowds were quite big that day! Just wish, I could have done more! Glad you liked the photos as I think I do a decent job with my photo taking!
This TR is finally winding down and then I can finally begin my next!

Yum Liberty Tree Tavern! Glad you were able to experience some firsts today
I liked LTT quite a bit! I can't say I had the best burger there ever, but it was quite good! I really love the late 1700's colonial theming of the restaurant. Is that the best way to describe it?

After completing most of my packing for the flight home to New York City tomorrow, I made sure I had everything and left my room at 5pm and spend a bit of time in the Animal Kingdom, which unfortunately, I had not visited on this trip. I had planned to do so a few days ago, but one of my golf rounds ended a bit late and I’d be cutting it close to one of my ADR times for dinner, if I had.
More of Alliagator Bayou in Riverside.
A bus arrived for the Animal Kingdom at the North Depot, just as I got there! That was good , since I had limited time this afternoon, before I had to leave for my ADR. We arrived at the AK rather quick and I was off the bus at around 5:15 pm. It wouldn’t be an attraction packed afternoon, but I’d still would have a good time and do some exploring. Just wish I had more time in the AK today!
It was pretty hot out at this time of day and to me AK always seems somewhat hotter than the other parks! Perhaps, it has something to do with the vast amount of tropical trees and vegetation located here? There were not that many visitors entering the park at this time and the entrance paths on Discovery Island were sparsely populated!
Paths leading to Discovery Island
Always love the sight of this upon entrance in the Animal Kingdom!
Asia, I would be going to as I always love Expedition Everest and would probably be the only attraction, I’d have time for!
This is another sight I have been accustomed to liking in the AK, when I see it. It was quite congested in Asia and took a bit of maneuvering through the crowds to make it over to Expedition Everest. I wasn’t worried about the wait times for EE as I’d be going for the Single Rider line, which is always quick and I was hoping for a couple of rides on one of my favorite WDW attractions!
One of the AK residents taking it all in stride!
I finally made it over to Expedition Everest and only one other person was in the Single Rider line. This certainly made it easy! It enabled me to ride four times in about fifteen minutes or so! I think this was time well spent and I enjoyed it as much as always. I wasn’t seated in the front or back rows on any of my rides (either one is what you want), but a row off the front and back on two of my rides!
The thrill of Expedition Everest and probably too much for some! After a bit of thrill seeking, which was short lived, I headed back towards Discovery Island and took a number of photos along the way.
Like this sign, not too far from EE.
Love the detail in these temples, other structures and some of the local accessories accompanying them. I don’t remember coming across these in Asia before. Perhaps, I just missed them somehow? Anyone know much about these?
One of my favorite FABs in WDW. I didn’t have one on this visit as I’d be heading over to the AKL for dinner shortly.
Shortly, I was back here!
There wasn’t an abundance of birds and wildlife out and about this afternoon, but glad I was able to capture a few of them!
Shortly, I exited the AK and walked to the bus depots. I didn’t have to rush as there wasn’t a bus for AKL/KV at my station yet. I think I waited only about five minutes for a bus and there weren’t that many people waiting for an AK bus, so I had a good choice of seats, when I boarded. We had a bit of delay as they were changing drivers, but not too bad!
It was a short ride and we arrived at Jambo House at about 6:30 pm. I had an hour until my ADR at Jiko. I suppose, I could have spent a bit more time in the AK, but I didn’t want to cut it close as I could have had a long wait for a bus.
Love the lobby here, even if it’s a bit dark. Maybe the best of any WDW resort?
Victoria Falls Lounge in Jambo House, where I enjoyed a glass of South African Sauvignon Blanc before dinner.
Some of the detail near Victoria Falls Lounge
One of the African musicians outside at Jambo House.
Love the detailing and theming at AKL.
It was almost 7:30 pm, so I checked in for my ADR at Jiko. They asked me, if I wanted to sit up at the bar, (where the chefs bake the various breads and prepare the various salads), but I passed on it. I’ve dined here several times and have always sat at the bar for dinner as I like talking to the chefs and watching them prepare some of the salads and breads. This time, I decided I wanted to dine at a table and after a long day in the parks, that would be more relaxing. I was given a pager, but I think I only had to wait a minute or two, until my table was ready.
Came out a bit dark, but this is Jiko.
One of the tables at Jiko.
I can’t remember who my server was, but he was very good and quite knowledgeable about the menu and the large selection of South African wines that are available here. My server started me off with some bread and herb butter, which was quite flavorful. I also ordered a glass of South African Pinotage (red) that my server recommended with my appetizer. Probably, wouldn’t last for two courses! After enjoying my glass of Pinotage and the bread for a while, my first course arrived.
Wild Boar Tenderloin with sauce accompanied with mieliepap (maize porridge polenta) and chakalaka (a spicy vegetable relish). I enjoyed this very much and had so much flavor and was perfectly cooked.
My main course, Botswana Beef Short Ribs with sauce, accompanied by a potato puree, mushrooms and Sambal (spicy Asian condiment. Basically a ground chili paste). This was also very good, but very filling.
Unfortunately, I was a bit full so I passed on dessert. Instead I had an espresso and a Grand Marnier to end my meal. I was very pleased and satisfied with Jiko tonight and glad I came back as it had been since May, 2009 since my last visit. This was after dining there some five times between 2003-09. Although, Jiko is a bit pricey, they do a great job here and will certainly provide you with great cuisine and service! Worth a treat, if you can afford it!
A few of the chefs at Jiko behind the sit down kitchen (bar).
The charcoal fired clay oven at Jiko.
Two of the CMs at Jiko.
Scenery inside Jambo House
More inside Jambo House.
It was about 9:15 pm or so now, but I wasn’t ready to call it a night yet and head back to Riverside. Especially, since it’s my last night in WDW on this trip and had a late flight home tomorrow night, so I can afford to stay out a bit later tonight and sleep in a bit if I want to.
NEXT: Relaxing Time on My Last Evening!

What an awesome way to spend your last few park hours at AK!! We love Expedition Everest!! Dinner at Jiko sounds delightful!! I will be eating there with Logan in July and can't wait to do so!!
What a great meal at Jiko! It used to be one of my favorites but I had a disappointing steak last time so I haven't been back in a few years
Sorry, to hear about your last experience at Jiko! In my many meals at Jiko, I've never had a meal that I was displeased with in any way! Perhaps, it was an off night for one of the chefs unfortunately on your behalf !

Had a nice time in the AK, but wish I could have spent more time and more experiences with other attractions like KS and other animal related things! Jiko is one of the best sigs in WDW and you should go back....but if I remember correctly, you and Luke had a great meal there in May 2014 (from your TR) So, hasn't been too long!

It was a great meal and had equal service to match, which is just as important to make a great meal!

Nice time at AK! My DD would be jealous of your 4 times in a row on EE!!!
Dinner sounded wonderful too!
Fun time in the AK, even with limited time! Definitely, worth it with four trips on EE! Jiko was great in every way!

Probably, just over an hour at AK! Always love EE and especially the single ride line and can ride so many times! Not a lot of waiting like other Single Rider lines like RNRRC in Studios and TT in Epcot!

It was fun in the Ak and of course wanted to spend more time....but unfortunately, wasn't in the cards! Always, another trip for this as there always is to WDW! It was a great dinner! Have you and Mark ate there as I'm not sure, if I recall the two of you dining there from one of your TRs?
