Escaping The Brutal Northeast For Sunny, Warm Florida and Fun! Completed 7/12 - Page 20 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

I just got back today! Had such a great time. Originally, I planned 2 nights stay, but extended a third night, late on my second evening!.....I wasn't winning really, but just enjoying myself!
It's quite sad that three of the casino resorts (Trump Plaza, The Showboat and Revel...more on the latter shortly) have closed recently! It's such a great area with the resorts and Boardwalk. So much to see and do here! Competition from the north in CT and Yonkers has hurt them a bit, but not really the main reason, when talking to resort employees etc. Most say it's that the Atlantic City area has never been developed outside of the Boardwalk, where most of the casinos are located!
There is one more region in the marina area next to Brigatine where three casino resorts (Borgatta, Harrahs and the Golden Nugget) are located. Never been there, but always here good things about this area! It's not close to the Boardwalk, but to walk there means going through some quite unsafe areas. This has been the problem with AC and not developing the area outside of the resorts!
Many say, this is why some of these resorts have failed recently and not because of Yonkers and CT! These casinos have only the resort themselves and not outside areas like a boardwalk with so much to see as well as other resorts to explore!
AC will survive, but may have to be scaled back a bit. Still a lovely place.
I visited the AC Museum, the other day. Just ran into it, while wanting to see the recently closed Revel Resort and Casino (2.5 billion, it cost and wasn't finished. Only open for two years. Good News!.....They have a buyer, to keep it as a casino/resort! The museum has a great and informative host at sign in!
It was very informative and gave me such great info! No charge for the museum and covers a small floor. Nice displays with AC history and video. Very well done and quite compact! It was so well worth it and of course the price! I did make a donation! There is so much history in AC and a larger venue for this is needed. Loved the host here as she had so much knowledge on AC's history, tourism etc. So glad, I just ran into this place by accident!!!
.....Can't wait to return here! Been so long as I love it, even without gambling! It was nearly 20 years and know how much I love it!!! so much Atlantic City! A real gem!
Eventually, I will get back to this TR!

Glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay in AC so much! It needs all the visitors it can get I haven't been there in at least 10 years as I'm not a gambler but as you mentioned, it has such a nice boardwalk and beach! I hope they find a way to fund a revitalization project for the city as a whole because it could be such a great tourism boom for NJ if done properly!

It was a bit quiet during the week, but on my arrival day on Sunday AC was quite busy! I couldn't agree with you more, but that's up to the local and state governments. They've had many years to do this since the first casinos were built here some 30+ years ago!

After a long day yesterday, I woke up at 7 am and feeling I had a pretty good sleep. I was a bit tired but not too much. I had my golf bag ready to bring with me as I’d be playing golf in a few hours over at Magnolia, near the Magic Kingdom.
First, I walked over to the food court at Riverside Mill for just some basic breakfast. Just some orange juice, coffee, banana and a blueberry Greek yogurt. Pretty basic for me. I got here about 7:45 and was it was already pretty crowded. No surprise being a Sunday and a lot of people were heading home not long after breakfast.
The weather seemed to be off to a much better start than yesterday with perfectly blue skies and temps in the upper 60's early this morning. I went back to my room for a bit and grabbed my golf bag and made the arduous walk back to the hub of the resort. The walk isn’t usually much, but with a golf bag, it’s tougher than usual! I didn’t bring my camera as I didn’t want to leave it out in the sun in the golf cart or in my bag and forget it on my return. So, sorry there will be no photos on the golf portion of my trip!
I went to the Bell Services desk outside and told them I needed a taxi to the Palm/Magnolia courses. They called one as there weren’t any waiting in the parking lot as often there are. They gave me a voucher for this. If you’re a resort guest you get free transportation to the Disney golf courses. This is a good benefit staying on property. My taxi came in a few minutes and was on my way to the Palm/Magnolia courses. We passed by the former Osprey Ridge golf course, which is now the Four Seasons resort. I could see the resort and was nearly complete at this time. I will miss Osprey Ridge as it was my favorite of the Disney courses.
The route we took was past Fort Wildnerness, TTC and the Polynesian. The courses are located within the Shades of Green resort. I arrived at the course at 9:30. One of the CMs took my bag out of the trunk and I went to check in and pay for my round. I was getting a two round pass and is a good discount off the regular rate. Even more so, for a resort guest. My original reservation was for 10:04, but my tee time was moved back to 10:12. The hospitality here is great as it is in the rest of Disney. I went back outside and saw my bag was on the cart and filled up my ice bucket to put my bottles of water in. I got some golf range balls and drove out to the driving range to practice before my round. I haven’t played a lot recently as it’s been quite cold and snowy in the northeast, so it may be a rough round today. But, better than being at work!
Just to let you know, that these courses (Palm and Magnolia) are quite reputable and great courses as they play one of the PGA tournaments here each November and have been since WDW opened.
I got to the first tee and checked in there. The starter said there was a bit of a delay (about 15 minutes) because of the rain yesterday. It was cart paths only for driving the carts on and that slows play down a bit as instead of driving to your ball, the cart must be on the path and you walk to your ball from there. Sometimes the walks are pretty good with the big open fairways down here. I was paired up with three other people and can’t remember where they were from. I enjoyed their company throughout the round!
We finally began and teed off at around 10:30. It was a long round out there, but still quite enjoyable. I played better than I thought and enjoyed it. Always enjoy seeing the famous Mickey bunker on hole #6. There is a snack/beverage cart that comes around and was looking for a hot dog or sandwich. The CM said she didn’t have any with her, but they’d probably have some at the snack stand at the 10th hole, so I’d wait until then.
So after finishing the front nine, I went to the snack bar at the 10th hole and asked for a hot dog. They were out of them and sandwiches as well! All they had was some chips and cookies! I couldn’t believe, that’s all they had. That’s very un-Disney like! I did get a couple of bags of chips to hold me over until later. I played the rest of the round and had a good time out there. It was a slow round and usually takes around four hours here. I think it was about 5 hours or so. It was also quite busy out here, so that slowed things down as well.
One of the things I enjoy about playing here is some of the Disney sights and sounds you experience and get you in the Disney mood! Seeing the Disney buses going by to/from the Magic Kingdom as well as the sight of the Polynesian and Grand Floridian on the last few holes and even that of the Wedding Pavilion of the GF. The best is on the last few holes and hearing the sounds of the Walt Disney World Railroad train whistle! That just does it for me!
After returning my cart, just outside the pro shop, a CM cleaned my clubs and asked if I would be playing any more rounds at Disney. I told him I was playing Palm tomorrow, so they’d store my clubs for me. Better than having to lug it back to Alligator Bayou. But would have to, after my final round on Wednesday. He also asked if I needed a taxi back to my resort. I told him I do, but wanted to get something to eat first.
There is another snack bar here, close to this area, just adjacent to the putting green. I got a hot dog and an iced tea. Love the hot dogs down at Disney! They’re a bit bigger than average, but always taste so good! There were some tables here in a covered area with fans going as it got pretty warm out there. They had a TV and I watched a bit of the UCONN/Michigan State college basketball championships game. After this I went to just outside the pro shop and told a CM that I needed a taxi back to Riverside. He called one and gave me a voucher. Sometimes it takes a while for the taxi to get here, when they call them from the golf courses. Today, it only took about ten minutes, which is about the norm. I got back in about five minutes at around 4:30.
I had three Fastpass+ ressies for the Magic Kingdom today and unfortunately with the long golf round, I missed my first one and would probably miss my second one. That’s the tough part of doing the golf as well as the parks but always have a good time. I changed and watched the weather and a bit of Stacy and left my room for the North Depot and headed to the Magic Kingdom at 5:15.
NEXT: New Experience in the Magic Kingdom!

A very nice day at the golf course. I remember back when Shades of Green was "Disney's Golf Resort" before the Armed Forces affiliation. Seems ridiculous that they didn't have any real food at the snack bars!
It sounds like playing golf at WDW has lots of added bonuses.
Yes it does and I certainly enjoy myself out there!
