I guess our town draws it out a bit! Our posted hours are 6-9. Quite a few of the younger kids start earlier (like 4:30!). Like I said, it's dark by 6.
I hear you all about the teens. I was manning the door at my dad's one year, and a young man showed up with 4 bags - one for him, one for his girlfriend, one for his baby, and one for "my baby-mama". Asked how old the baby was, since I didn't see one - it was 4 months old. He was very upset when I refused him candy! He just didn't seem to get that if he were old enough to have a baby-mama and a girlfriend, maybe he was too old to trick or treat!

I've never lived anywhere where Trick or Treating was dictated. It's always been the day of and any time you want to have your house open to it.

We were ready at 3:30pm today....good thing too, as two 2yr olds and their parents came by around 4. After that we didn't have anyone until after 5:30. Our last visit was at 8:30. Kept the lights on until 9:15.

The one big unwritten rule we've always adhered to was, you only go to houses that have lit pumpkins or their porch light on. All other homes are off-limits.

Halloween has always been on Halloween. no designated hours, usually around dusk til about 8:30. But I shut the door and lights off at 8pm as not many kids were out after that. It seems that more teens and older are trick or treating these days.
I remember that moment of truth,in my day,( que the wayback music) that you were too old to Trick or treat to houses being around age 13 or 14 at the most, when people would look at you funny or comment that you were kind of old to be out. Also When the kids were babies / toddlers... we basically only went to relatives homes and neighbors who knew them. We did not go to dozens of houses getting candy. It was basically to let the family see the little ones in costume. With that said , my younger nephews had no problem being 16 - 17 yrs old and going out dressed up and knocking on doors.

I have no problem with any costumed teenager coming by my house. We didn't get any of them this year. I love to see what the everyone chooses to wear as costumes no matter their age. (The few times I've had a non-costumed teen come by, I've given them candy but scolded them for not trying).

We had a couple parents dress up (Lumiere and the Duster) and I offered them candy, but they wouldn't take it.

I grew up in WV and my town always designated what day and time trick-or-treating would occur...normally 6-8 pm. My mom still lives in WV (different county) and where she lives trick or treating was supposed to be on Tuesday from 6-8 pm, but due to the storm, they moved it to tonight from 6-8 pm. Not sure why they seldom actually trick or treat on Halloween. Where I live in Maryland, trick or treating is always on Halloween and there are no set hours. The earliest came at 5:45 last night and we turned out our lights at 8:30 pm because we didn't see anyone else headed our way.

I hand out candy to anyone who comes up to the house, but I wish they would all make an attempt at a costume. One of the later group of teens (looked to be around 17-19 years old) didn't bother with costumes but had large pillowcases for their candy, which I did give them while asking what they were dressed as....couldn't understand their response. My 15 year old daughter still goes out with friends, but my 18 year old stopped several years ago. The 15 year old was cat woman and her boyfriend was batman, so at least they put some thought into it.

I have no problem with teenagers trick or treating as long as they dress up.
We didn't have the older kids this year that we usually get -- which I thought was odd, as it was rather warm (for Halloween in MN).

Governor Christie signed an executive order moving Halloween to Monday November 5th because of the devastation our state is in because of Sandy. But I have to say, I'm not sure my town will even be ready Monday. We don't even know if the kids will be going back to school Monday and only about 45% of us have power. This is the second year in a row we had to move Halloween, last year it was moved because of that freak ice/snow storm right before Halloween.

I live in South Jersey and our town got permission to hold it yesterday (Friday) from 4-8. I think this year we had more kids than we have had in the last 4 years total. They ranged in age from 2 - 16. I was very surprised that even the older kids this year had parents following them (probably because of what happened in South Jersey a couple of weeks ago). Everyone had costumes, some had more thought put into them than others, and all of the kids were very polite this year. We have had some obnoxious ones in the past.

Many of the subdivisions had signs up with the times for trick or treating.

The 3 I saw while running errands in the afternoon on 10/31 said trick or treating from 6:30p to 8:30pm.
There was also a nearby church doing the trunk of treats with blow up bouncy houses and games they were setting up during that time frame. It looked pretty fun.

Our little subdivision doesn't have specific times but hardly anyone gives out candy. We turned out our light at 9pm and were surprised when 4 teens rang our bell at 9:15pm.
I did answer the door and saw I knew the girls and they were in costume so I gave them candy and reminded them to only go to houses with the lights on because if the light is off, that means the house is not handing out candy. They said they knew but since they knew us, they wanted to stop by so I could see their costumes.

We had 25 kids and they were all dressed up. Except for the baby whose Mom was carrying her and holding out a pillow case. We all know who was going to eat that candy.

We live in a rural area, and we draw people from all over the place to our subdivision. We usually average around 250-270 kids.

We started doing a rough time for trick or treating. The reason we do that is we have to close off the street to our subdivision because of the traffic. People who don't live there can park outside on a dead end street and walk in. We usually post it until about 8:30 - 9:00. I usually run out of candy before then anyway.

Yes, the local hour prints out the regular times for trick-or-treating, usually 6-8 on Halloween. There's usually also the Town Center and Farmer's Market celebrations on the weekend before, if the holiday falls on a weekday. This year Halloween wasn't moved, but the normal weekend celebrations were moved to the holiday. Made things weird.
