Should we buy a celebration cake for daughter’s birthday? - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears

Moving on with the current of the years.

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

Should we buy a celebration cake for daughter’s birthday?
Hi! My daughter will be turning 10 on the second day of our Alaska cruise. We’ll be at sea the whole day. I will be bringing items to decorate the room (I have a fun centerpiece for a nightstand and I’m planning on making magnetic door decorations). This way the room will be decorated on her actual birthday. What we’re trying to figure out is if we should order a celebration cake for her. Is it worth it? The price seems high for what you get. Also, I was thinking that if we do order the cake then we would have it delivered to our room. I think that she will have so much fun picking out her dessert at dinner that night. We just don’t want to take away the fun in that for her. So do you think that it’s worth it to order the cake?
Also, is there anything else that we could do to make this a special day for her? This is our first Disney cruise and we all are very excited!
The cake is really a matter of how you want to mark your daughter's birthday. A cruise does offer the chance for special experiences that could be much more memorable than just another cake. And let's face it, there's no shortage of cake and other treats available around the clock, at no extra charge. Personally, I like the idea of singing Happy Birthday in one of the main dining rooms, as it involves more people in the celebration. An in-room cake ceremony with just the four of you generally doesn't have the same drama, as far as I'm concerned.
Rather than pay extra for the cake, why not order some regular treats from room service to go along with the decorations? The cake-of-the-day, cookies, fruit, pizza... (we keep our room stocked with cookies, fruit, and cheese throughout the cruise).
You can make your meals a bit more special by taking advantage of the full-service breakfast and lunch in Triton's - it's open seating. There will be movies in the Buena Vista Theatre throughout the day - there may be one she especially wants to share with the family. If she's wildlife/nature oriented... there will probably be presentations by a park ranger.
It'll be Formal Night and the Captain's Welcome Reception - a great opportunity to dress up and have family portraits as well as a photo op with the Captain.
In other words, there are lots of opportunities for cruise-unique experiences that can make the day special - it's all just a matter of what may float her boat.
It may also be a good time to surprise her with a special shore excursion you know she'll love.

I think if you let it slip to your servers about your daughter's birthday, they'll help to make it a special time at dinner or breakfast if you choose to go to Triton's that morning. If that day allows, give your daughter a special treat in the salon (you have to be 18 for the spa) or if it's a port day, let her plan the day and pick the excursion you do (within reason and budget). Ask at guest services if they have the birthday buttons or something like in the parks. There are always plenty of photo ops on board so maybe make a 10th birthday sign for her to hold in some of the pics. And, of course, when you get home, go on line and make her a photo book of the cruise as a special memory. Most photo websites do them and I know that photo pass has DCL pages etc now and while the cruise pics aren't photo pass, you can upload your own to make the book. Oh, another idea; get a photo mat and write your daughter's name and 10th birthday on it for character signatures and put a cruise pic in it. You can also do one of those photo collages on line with some of your pics from the cruise and give it the title of (your daughter's name) 10th Birthday. Granted, those aren't on board activities but would add to the memories. Have fun.

We've celebrate our daughter birthday twice at the ship. Just tell the waiter during the first night and ask them if they are able to sing happy birthday and help you celebrate he day!
They brought a special dessert - cupcake with a candle - for our DD and the waiter did a bird origami for her as a present! The sang happy birthday! She loved it!!!!
Thanks for all the great ideas!!! We now feel better on our decision to pass on the cake. I know that we’ll be celebrating all day long and any chance to have dessert will be taken. It’s also nice to know that our server may do something special for her. Thanks again!
