National parks, natural beauty and a bit of Disney wonder! COMPLETED - Page 26 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Friday 2 September – part five: a very risqué lunch
Shortly after that, we were back in Skagway proper and blocking up one of the town’s few roads with lots of people waiting to cross. It was a bit surreal.
Finally, we moved forward enough to alight and set off for the Red Onion Saloon for lunch.
As many of you may already know, this place is quite famous because of its history as a brothel, where the gold panners would pay a measly $5 for the services of the ladies here. Now I will warn you that, because of this history, some of the images they have on the wall are pretty explicit, surprisingly so actually. There was a warning up in there about bringing in people under the age of 21. I believe it could result in a fine of £1,500, so that gives you an idea. Anyway, you have been warned... feel free to skip over the next few photos to the next chunk of text if you think you may be offended, as that’s the last thing I want to do, but equally I do want to share everything we saw with you...
Even outside, there’s a bit of a warning about what you can expect!
In this section, I will also include photos of the various ladies who act as servers, as some of their costumes were risqué..
Ok, now on to other things.... the food. I wasn’t expecting much here, as I assumed it was one of those places where you come more for the atmosphere, but actually there wasn’t a bad selection of food on the menu when we looked.
We just had an entree each, although there were plenty of choices for appetisers. I went for the Madam Jan (yes, all the items had funny names! ), which was a three cheese pesto pizza with mozzarella, parmesan, goat cheese and roasted garlic. It was very nice, but the roasted garlic wasn’t that great, mainly because it was burnt in places.
Mark had the Sloppy Joe’s, ground beef in a sweet rich tomato sauce with onions and peppers. Neither of us had heard of this before, so he was intrigued by it and seemed to enjoy it.
The bill came to $86 for the four of us, including four drinks between myself and Steve, which I thought was pretty good. We topped it up to $100 for tip and I still thought we got good value. All in all, it was a very fun lunch and something I’m very glad we got to do in Skagway, as this is something of a fun traditional out here and I can see why.
Red Onion Saloon:
Entree 8 8 ½
Service 8½ 8
Atmosphere 9 9
Value for money 9 9
Average score: 8.63
We set off for a walking tour around Skagway next, heading first for the Klondike National Historic Park Visitor Centre. I was able to get some National Parks stamps for my passport, but that was about it, as there really wasn’t that much to see here, which was a shame.
We wandered along and headed for the Caboose that we’d seen at the railroad depot as we’d driven it, but we hadn’t been able to get good shots of it then. We got some, as well as some fun ones of Sue and Steve.
Our next stop was the small Centennial Park next door, which was neat.
Very cool day! I was wondering what that last teaser was going to lead to...now I know!
Sloppy Joe's...that's a bit of an American tradition for kids growing up...we used to have Sloppy Joe sandwiches for school lunch every now and then. Gosh it's been a long time since I thought about those...I think I may have to go to the market and buy some Sloppy Joe sauce mix and some ground beef to make me a sandwich tomorrow!
Skagway looks very quaint...I love little towns with lots of history!

It's amazing that with all you did on that tour it was over by lunchtime! Great that you got time to also explore Skagway and have lunch in a "themed" restaurant!
Sloppy Joe's are pretty yummy. It's been a while since I've had one, but I wouldn't turn one done if you put it in front of me. I guess that Saloon is their version of "Hooters".

I guess so, although never having been in Hooters (Mark's always keen - can't think why? ) I can't say for sure!
Mmm, sloppy joe's. That was my favorite as a kid and I still make it about once a month! I put lots of brown sugar in mine to satisfy my sweet tooth. Anyway, I'm glad you guys enjoyed your time at the Red Onion! And good thing they give the warnings outside as well as inside, they sure don't need any kids in there!

Not surprisingly, this is by far my favorite picture
GREAT pictures, Chez. That train ride must have been just amazing. And I'm still fascinated by the quaint little town of Skagway. I have to convince my DH to go on an Alaska cruise soon!!!
YUMMMMM Sloppy Joes.... ok I know what I want to make for dinner this week (note to self - go shopping for fixings)! The ROS looked like so much fun! Your railroad excursion sounded wonderful (if you leave Mr. Rude out of the equation). Skagway sounds like a really neat place!

LOL, cool place that ROS! How funny, I love all those oldtime joints like that and the pictures were pretty fun too, and the toilet seats??
I really can't stand Rachael Ray, but if you google her Super Sloppy Joe recipe.....it's a winner. Easy to make and I now Mark would like it!
More beautiful pictures too, I have told my Arnaud we are doing this cruise for sure in the future, despite the weather, the scenery keeps getting more amazing.
