Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Thursday 7/21/2011 Part 2

After lunch, we headed over to the Shamu Stadium side of the park. There were some pennies we wanted to collect and Abby wanted to go to the underwater viewing area.

We finally found the pennies but when we found the underwater viewing area, it was closed off due to construction. None of us were happy about that but there’s nothing you can do so I convinced Abby that we should go to the Wild Arctic exhibit instead. She didn’t want to but we went anyway. We got in the "walking" line instead of the "ride" line because I didn’t think I would be able to handle it. It’s actually a good thing we did because first of all, we had no wait whatsoever, we could walk right into the movie and secondly, even sitting on stationary seats the movie made me dizzy . The movie was only about 5 minutes but it was inside and we sat on cold metal benches. I don’t know what the temperature was at that time but the heat was taking it’s toll on us and every bit of cold we could find we enjoyed. We spent a while in here looking at all of the animals and taking some more pictures.

When we emerged into where else but a gift shop, we found one of the 2 pressed penny machines that was suppose to be there. Lenny asked an employee about the second one and he was told there was only the one. We weren’t overly surprised as the only list I could find for the pennies was dated back in 2009 and we know things change .

From Wild Arctic, Abby said she wanted to go to the Dolphin Nursery. Since we were done on the Shamu side of the park, we headed back that way and both Lenny and I noticed Abby starting to drag her feet. As soon as we got to the Dolphin nursery, Lenny got up and let Abby sit on the scooter for a while and we made sure to use our wet cloth on her and make her drink some water. What’s funny though about the dolphin nursery is the last time I was at Sea World, that was the only dolphin tank they had and to see it with a covering and a fence around it so you couldn’t get close to the dolphins was just strange. I still have pictures of my brother leaning over the side of the tank to either feed or touch one of the dolphins. But things grow and this and the "new" Shamu Stadium were the only two things I recognized in the entire park.

In this tank that day, there were actually 7 dolphins. 2 mothers with their calves, 1 pregnant dolphin and 2 companion dolphins. There was an employee there giving some interesting information about them. She told me (because I mentioned it being the old tank) that the reason why it was now the dolphin nursery and fenced off is to give the mother and calf a really good chance to bond and "just be dolphins." They’re living in a tank instead of the ocean so I’m not sure if that’s entirely possible but hey, who am I to say differently. She also said they would stay there for up to I believe 18 months (I know it’s at least one year) but she never said where they go after that.

After watching the dolphins and listening to the employee for a little while, we decided it was time to get Abby somewhere else so we headed over to the regular dolphin area. We stopped for a nice cold drink for a few minutes - a lemonade this time - and sat at a table that had a covering. I’m pretty sure there was a ceiling fan too as after a few minutes of sitting there, Abby was looking and acting better. We stopped at the sting ray lagoon for a few minutes and even got some more pennies but Abby didn’t want to try and touch the rays.

Afterwards, we headed to the dolphins. It was too late in the day to try and feed them but we could still go and try to touch them. It took a few minutes before Abby or I could even get close to the wall but once we did, it was amazing to see how many dolphins there were there. One finally approached and Abby didn’t want to touch it at first but I finally got her to try it. All the while, everyone else was trying to touch them too. It was kind of a mad house but once Abby was able to touch the dolphin, she enjoyed it.

Thursday 7/21/2011 Part 3

I have to mention that this part of the park was shady at that time and a breeze had come up - both of which Abby needed (we all did but Abby especially). There were employees there who had to keep telling people not to put their hands in front of the dolphins, to only touch them on their sides. The minute a hand went in front of the dolphins, they opened their mouths expecting a fish to drop in but despite that, people kept doing it. And then of course I had the biggest trouble maker with me . Before we left home, we found a nice underwater camera on clearance at Walgreens for a really cheap price and we bought it. Lenny used that for his camera and at the dolphin tank, he thought he’d be smart by trying to get an underwater photo of them. Needless to say, he was caught and an employee came right over to him to tell him to remove the camera from the water and that if we wanted underwater shots, the go to the viewing area. I kind of just shook my head at him but at least he listened and put it away. After a while, I got tired of leaning over the tank and tried to move away so someone else could get a chance to get up close but when I went to stand up, I noticed someone leaning over me. I tried to stand up 3 times before the person got the hint and moved . Had it been a kid, I wouldn’t have minded so much but it was an adult and I thought it was kind of rude to be leaning over me like that .

We eventually made our way down to the underwater viewing area for the dolphins and we stayed there for a while as well. I just couldn’t believe how many dolphins they had in there and they were all very active.

Click here to see a video we took of the Dolphins (there is no sound so there’s nothing wrong with your speakers - it was taken with Lenny’s camera and with the case on the camera, it didn’t pick up sounds too well)

After watching them for a while, we moved off and found some more pressed penny machines (a couple were out of order )and then made our way over to the manatees. Abby didn’t have any interest in watching them from up top so we went to the underwater viewing area here as well.

She watched them for maybe a minute or two then she went to the back of the area for the interactive things they had. One display showed how manatees chew their food, another was some video clips but I don’t know what they told about - I didn’t watch them - and there was at least one more but I don’t know what it was. We left there and headed towards Journey to Atlantis. At first, long before we even got to the park, Abby had said she wanted to ride it. Once we got there though, she changed her mind. I don’t know why but I’m sure the incoming dark clouds and the fact it was being announced the ride MAY have to close because of the storm might have had something to do with it . In an effort to see if she really wanted to ride it or not, I bought some ice creams for her and Lenny (the kind I wanted the employee was out of ) and we stood there and watched while we had our snacks. Abby still said she didn’t want to ride so we moved on over to the Kraken area. We knew there was some pennies there and we found the machine but then I ran out of quarters. There was a small gift shop there and I ran in to see if the cashier had any quarters to sell me. He said he couldn’t but there was a change machine by the lockers at Journey to Atlantis. He also told me that he had a map of the pressed penny machines. That surprised me as I had emailed Sea World asking if they had anything like that before we went on vacation and the response was they did not . I thanked the cashier, took a couple of maps and headed over to the change machine. Since I knew I would need a bunch of quarters, I stuck a 20 in the machine and hoped I would get 20 dollars worth of quarters. I did and with the quarters in hand, we looked at the map and learned that there were pennies at Journey to Atlantis. We went back there and while Lenny looked for the machine, Abby and I went in the aquarium - if you can even call it that. It was one room with all of 6 tanks but what was cool is that in the center of the room, both the floor and ceiling were glass so you could see things swimming around. I know above us there were some small sharks but my photos didn’t come out well. I don’t recall what was swimming below us. Lenny found the machine and Abby found a couple of souvenirs in the gift shop that she liked and after I paid for that, we noticed it was really starting to get breezy and the storm seemed to be approaching quickly. We didn’t let it bother us but we did quickly head to our next destination - the penguins.

The penguin encounter is brought to you by SouthWest

It was still dry when we got there and we headed inside. I tried getting pictures of the puffins swimming but they were way too fast for me to get anything. Then we headed to the penguins. I was kind of disappointed in that because it was dark inside. I understand that they want to keep the penguins to their normal sunlight hours, etc but it kind of stinks when you can barely see anything. Plus too, I don’t know if anyone else notices it or not but that whole exhibit inside stunk like someone peed in there. Between the lack of lights and the smell, we didn’t linger long and ended up at a gift shop. Who would have thought??? There were a couple of pressed penny machines there so we got those and Abby started to complain she was tired of walking. Lenny, being the sport he his, got off the scooter so Abby could sit down. It still wasn’t raining yet and nobody was around so we let Abby stay on the scooter and drive it a little bit
.

She only went a few feet and then came out with "I gotta get me one of these things." Lenny and I stood there laughing but continued on. When we noticed that it was lightning out, we made Abby get off the scooter as she and I could move much quicker walking then Lenny could. We did stop long enough to get the scooter console covered and the umbrella and ponchos at the ready. It was lightning and there was a little bit of thunder but it had gotten quite dark out and it really seemed like it was going to pour at any minute. Abby was getting tired and said she wanted to leave but we convinced her to stay and get a few more pennies that we knew were over by the shark encounter. She agreed to stay and get them so that was our next destination. We stopped outside for a couple of minutes to watch the sharks there and then we headed inside

.

I have to admit, reading about it online, Sea World makes it seem like there’s a lot more to the exhibit than there really is. There weren’t all that many sharks in the tank and I was left pretty unimpressed with it. When we came out, we found the penny machines that were there and got them. We looked at our penny map and found there were 2 machines we had missed. Being the penny hunters we are, I couldn’t see skipping the machines - nor could Lenny actually. Abby didn’t really care. She wanted the pennies but didn’t really want to run for them. Since there was still lightning and a good breeze, we really had the feeling it was going to downpour at any minute so I came up with a solution. We would split up. Lenny and Abby would head to the car while I looked for the pennies. I was in hopes the rain would hold off long enough for Abby to get in the car and for Lenny to get the scooter broken down. I didn’t worry about me as I grabbed a poncho before they left so if it started to rain, I would be fine.

They headed towards the exit and I headed to the seal area which we had walked right by when we left the penguin area. When I got there, I thought to myself "it’s a good thing Abby and Lenny left - there’s nothing to see here." Really, there was nothing to see. There was all of one employee standing on the walkway looking bored and all the seals were curled up together in one mass. I said Hi to the employee but kept walking to the food stand where I knew the penny machine should have been. It was there, I got the pennies, then I headed back. Before I left the seal area though, I had the feeling that I would need my phone so I stopped to look for it. As I was rummaging around my bag (and having difficulty finding it) my phone started ringing . I didn’t find it in time but it was Lenny and Abby. She called to remind me to pick up our picture that we had taken that morning. It’s a good thing she called as I had completely forgotten. I told her to call me back in 2 or 3 minutes to remind me as I was on my way to the last penny machine. I found my way there - and it was back where we had started our day but we just never saw the machine - and got the last four pennies of the day. It still hadn’t started raining but I didn’t linger and made my way to the photo counter. There had been 4 pictures taken of us that day and it was kind of hard to decide which ones I wanted. After hemming and hawing about what I wanted, the cashier told me that I could pick 3 of the pictures and get frames for all 3 for a total of $35. She showed me the frames and I liked them so I went with that deal.

I thanked her for her help and finally made my way out of the park. I found Lenny and Abby without a problem and we headed back to the hotel.

It was a little after 9 when we left Sea World and by the time we got back to AS Sports, we were all hungry so Lenny dropped Abby and I off at the main building so we could run into the food court while he parked the car and got the scooter to the room. We went to the pizza line first because it was really short and ordered Lenny and myself the penne pasta and alfredo sauce with the chicken and salad. After that, we hopped into the line for Abby’s chicken nuggets. I’m glad I did it that way because after a minute or 2 there was something like 20 kids in line at the pizza counter. We got everything we needed and headed back to the room to eat. Lenny was already there and we sat down to enjoy our meal . Soon after we were done, Abby was sound asleep but I was up and doing some of my paperwork that I like to do (organizing receipts, keeping track of our money, etc). I also counted the pennies we had gotten. We ended up with 79 of them in total . Not too bad considering 1 machine was gone, 2 were out of order, and the list I had was from 2009 .

When I was done and getting my purse organized for the next day, I learned I couldn’t find my sunglasses (anyone remember those? Yeah, they’re the same exact ones I lost back in 2008 on Nemo). Lenny was not happy with me, I can tell you that . I wasn’t happy either but I figured they had to be someplace. I looked all around the room while Lenny went out to the car to look. Neither one of us had any luck in finding them but Lenny asked if he should call Sea World for me in the morning. I said it couldn’t hurt so I looked in the phone book for the number. After I found it, I wrote it down and put it on the night stand. It was late and we were tired so we called it a night. Neither one of us was happy but since there was nothing I could do at that time I opted not to worry about where my glasses were.

I'm glad you had a good day at Sea World, at least there was lots of places to escape the heat. Would you recommend Sea World as a side trip? I hope you find your sunglasses, I am lost without mine. Can't wait to hear about tomorrow!

If you like marine animals / aquariums yes I would. We spent 9 hours in the park and we only saw one show the entire day. Abby being Abby said "I can watch them (the other shows) on the computer at home" so we opted to see all the things we can't see from the computer. Plus we looked for a few pennies too

Loved the pictures! The one of Abby playing the drum and Abby at the manatee sculpture are my favorite ones. I agree with Abby's "I gotta get me one of these things"! LOL!!

Hey we went to SeaWorld this past trip also! My daughter and I both rode Manta and it was AWESOME!!! The best coaster I have ever riden. We really liked Sea World but like every other place we went it was full of tour groups so it was very crowded. I got talked into sitting in the splash zone at the Shamu show and boy they weren't kidding about getting wet.

Thanks - I think more than one person will agree with Abby. Lenny said next time we're going to rent 3 scooters to get around . Knowing the 2 big kids, it would turn into a race to see who could get somewhere first .

Oh no, - I'm sorry someone convinced you to sit in the splash zone. I'm glad you went on Manta and enjoyed it. I didn't dare do it - I get headaches on anything that isn't BTM. And I can tell you weren't at Sea World the same day - I don't remember seeing any tour groups

Good idea to have dinner in your room. Hope you found your sunglasses. I can't wear them - but I know if I did', I'd surely lose them. I lost my 4yr olds sunglasses on our recent beach trip.

I'm so glad you enjoyed Seaworld. We love it there and go for a day every other trip to Florida. Nicholas and I love the Pets Ahoy show too! Great job getting that many pennies!

I'm glad you enjoyed Sea World. My daughter used to work at Sea World of Ohio and it was one of our favorite places to go. We were at the one in Orlando 2 years ago and really enjoyed it. Glad you found so many of the penny machines. They really like to hide them sometimes.

It's so funny that you commented on the smell of the penguins! My first job was at the New England Aquarium at the time when they were re-doing the penguin enclosure. For a brief time, the penguins lived in the employee lounge and all I remember is how bad they smelled! No one believes me when I tell them that penguins smell bad. They may be cute, but they have an odor issue.

Glad to hear you had a nice day at SeaWorld and can't wait to hear more about your Disney adventures.

Sounds like a great day at Sea World and I think the sleep in morning worked as everyone was in better spirits. Glad you had a low crowd day so you were able to see everything you wanted. What a great pressed penny day...

What a great day at Sea World, glad to hear Abby woke up wanting to go. I really like the pics they took of you 3 at the park...I can't decide which is my favorite either, I see why you had a hard time deciding! And WOW to the 79 pennies! Looking forward to the rest of the trip!
