Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Ditching Disney for 1 day to experience Harry Potter

Our family of 4 (me, DH, and 2 teen daughters) is traveling to WDW Oct. 2 - 9, and we're trying to figure out how to work in a visit to the Wizarding World while we are there. The problem isn't time-- it's cash! We've already stretched the budget by booking a stay at AKL, and adding tickets to Universal would add at least another $400 to our trip. I have considered replacing one night at AKL with one night at a Universal hotel, thinking that the front of the line passes would be SO worth it...but will the Harry Potter attractions even be included in that deal? Plus, would it really be worth it to drop $400 (tickets only) -- $700 (tickets and hotel) just to see Harry???

I jokingly suggested to my family that since $$$ were an issue, only the 2 biggest Harry Potter fans should go...now we're having fun with ways to determine the two biggest fans. Any ideas?

We are having the same discussions - but there are 6 of us! Universal tickets are much more expensive than they were in 2007.

We are going the week before you - Sept 26-Oct 2. To fit in Universal, we will need to take teenager out of mid-terms a day early so we can get to Orlando by Saturday Sept 25. Since we can only go to Universal on a weekend, we are seriously considering staying at Royal Pacific or Hard Rock to get front of the line passes included. We've also considered paying for this option separately, but for 6 it adds up to almost half the room rate.

From what I have read, staying on-site at Universal includes front of the line at either park simply by showing your room keys, so it should include HP as well. I don't think the roller coasters have changed much - it looks like they have just been re-themed. Dueling dragons = Dragon challenge. There is also a HP package offer, but it requires a 3 night stay.

Decisions, decisions...Really wish $$$ wasn't the issue!

Some of the Universal Experts (me-NOT one!) say that the HP attractions won't be included in the "front of line" feature-which I don't get. It will obviously be a madhouse, why wouldn't they be included? We're taking a day (mid-week, Wednesday) from our Disney trip next March to go also. I was also debating the room thing, vs only buying tix; I'll just wait til closer to the trip to learn more I guess.

It is alot of money. For our family of 3 I think it will be about $200 for one days visit. But since we don't have the chance to do the MNSSHP this time around, and I am kind of dying to walk around and just take it all in, we will be going this year. I hadn't heard that about the separate admission just to get in the HP part...That would make us second guess if we have to buy additional tix to get in there after paying at the front gate...Good luck deciding!

We've been to Universal and it seems that they often don't include the newest (aka most popular rides) to the Universal Express (fast pass). Because the Universal Express isnot a one time thing, like a Disney fast pass, but can be used as many times as you want, I think it would make lines worse. So I am not an expert, but my guess is the UE won't include the Harry Potter rides, at least not this year. We are going in August, and staying onsite, so I can let you know when I get back.

There is no seperate admission for the Harry Potter area.

If the entire family loves HP that much, I think it's worth every penny to pay to visit it.

Griffin, where did you see that there is an additional fee to get in the Harry Potter area? I haven't read that anywhere.

That was my mistake, I got that mixed up with the front of the line feature, which is apparently like Disney's fastpass. Sorry!

Actually there are two front of the line passes. You can buy one which is good only once for each ride, or your key card from an onsite hotel can be used over and over again.

We're heading down Dec. 1-9. We're planning on heading over to WWoHP on Saturday the 4th since the parade will be filming at MK. It's the only reason we are going to US at all. We will go more when DD2 is older.

Good luck!

Passing on Harry

For now, i guess we'll plan on saving Harry for our next visit. Maybe we should do MNSSHP instead. Thanks for all the responses. I always learn so much from these boards!

I a very interested to hear what actually is happeing at the HP world. We are planning a trip in 2012 back to WDW and have to go to HP world since ds is a die-hard fan. Plus, I just want to see the castle up close and walk through Hogsmeade and get a Butterbeer.

My dad took me to Islands of Adventure for my 22nd birthday and LOVED it. Our whole family really enjoys the Harry Potter series and my husband (of all people) said "Well, since were going to be there for Disney, why wouldn't be check out HP too?" Well.. okay! On departure day of the resort, were going to Islands of Adventure. I enjoy all of the rides there (but I don't do roller coasters) and the rest of our family will like it too..

Personal story: The Jurassic Park ride still gives me nightmares .. and I'll be 30 in July.

While money was an issue, we made it a non issue, making cuts other places in our budget. We are huge HP fans and since we wont' be back to Orlando for a few years aren't willing to wait. I have found US runs specials quite a bit so keep an eye on their website or Undercover Tourist for a good deal. Back in 05 we were able to pick up 7 day passes for $75 each. You could also downgrade your wdw resort for a night or two to get the extra cash. Also talk with the kids, see how bad they want to go and what they are willing to give up for it. Eating out, movies, that sort of thing.
My DS was there in Jan and the new Hollywood Rip Rocket was not included in the Universal Express or the front of line option for resort guests. She said nothing had been built to accomodate one in the future. my guess is HP will be the same way. We know it will be crowded but fun all the same. Good luck with your decision.
