On the road (1) – Six countries, nine days COMPLETED - Page 25 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

I fell several days behind on your trip report, but I am all caught up now. I love the pictures of the places you have seen. What wonderful memories to have. The catherals were jsut beautiful. I am surprised how much you pay in tolls for use of the roads. I guess we do here too for some of our Highways, but bou it looks like you are getting nickeled and dimed as you go along. Did I miss out on "Tim" Is it the name you gave your GPS? or is it the brand name ?
It's the name we give our sat nav. The brand is Tom Tom.
I hear you about getting nickeled and dimed for the tolls in Europe.
Monday 22 March – part one: now where did we park the car?
We both felt pretty weary this morning from our escapades yesterday and it took us ages to get going. It didn’t help that there was no breakfast included with this room and so we just had some cookies for breakfast and that wasn’t really enough to invigorate us. Eventually, we headed out and packed the car up and decided to head back into Geneva. That hadn’t been in our plans originally, but the weather yesterday hadn’t been kind to us and we wanted to see if we could park up and see more of the city today.
We set off and ran into traffic almost immediately. I was thinking that maybe it wasn’t a good plan to go into the city on a Monday morning, but actually it quickly thinned out, as all the traffic turned left to go to the United Nations area. What a surprise!
After that, it was plain sailing and it was much easier this morning, as Mark had a very good idea of where he was going.
We quickly got into the main part of the city and easily parked up in a 30 minute limit area, which we figured would give us enough time to just wander around and get some photos.
We headed first for the cathedral and staggered our way up the steep slope that led to Place du Bourg-de-Four, one of the city’s central squares that was used as a meeting place in the Middle Ages. It’s full of history today, packed with historic beautiful buildings.
While here, I popped into a souvenir store and got some postcards, as well as some fridge magnets. Just as well I did, as there was nowhere else that we saw on our rounds to get anything like that.
From there, we headed towards the Cathedral St. Pierre, which dates from the 13th century. I figured we didn’t have enough time to go inside before our parking ran out, so we just took some photos of it from the outside.
We wandered down some streets, with me only half knowing where I was going, but we managed to stumble upon some charming places, including a wonderful area, packed with murals and cannons. It was almost a little surreal.
The next street we walked down took us past Maison Rousseau, the birthplace of the philosopher Jacques Rousseau, something I’d wanted to see while we were here, as I studied his work during my politics degree.
We carried on walking and saw lots more wonderful architecture. Almost everywhere you looked, there was another stunning building and a photo opportunity.
This is perhaps why the walk took us so long. When we eventually came out on the road at the bottom, it wasn’t a name I recognised and I couldn’t see it anywhere on the map. By now, I was starting to panic, as our parking was about to run out and I really didn’t want a fine, but I had no idea where we were. We walked a bit further in what we thought was the right direction and finally I saw a road name that I recognised. My goodness, we had a hike up that road though to find the car. I’d estimate by the time we got back, in about 40 minutes, we’d probably covered a good couple of miles. Not good news for my chronic fatigue. :

the art prof knows the name of the tree in German and is going to try to remember to look it up. he believes its a type of chestnut tree. folks are beginning to notice that every morning he grabs coffee and comes to my desk to read your TR. he commends your writing and photography skills. i must saw its so much fun to see your travels and get your commentary and then get his comments on the history and his visits there.
I usually don't comment much on your many many wonderful trip reports, but I just had to tell you that I giggled when I saw your picture of Restaurant au Carnivore and imagined the different expressions on both of your faces!
Thank you so much for the detailed comments and pictures. They really make me feel like I'm there with you! I haven't yet been to Europe, but I really hope to someday when the kids get a little older.

Oh it's just lovely! I loved seeing the cafes with all the outdoor seating! That just screams "Europe" to me! And the buildings are just so much prettier than in my town! LOL! I love it!! Great photos!!
