As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears

Moving on with the current of the years.

Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

Now depending if you charged, some of these expenses, you'll lose a bit more. You'll find out when you get your next credit card statements. Might, want to check online too. I don't think American Express charges for the conversion, but Visa and Mastercard do. I think it's about 1-3%.

Rick and I paid cash for EVERYTHING in Italy, so my credit card bill was considerably LESS than it usually is, I'm happy to say! We feared the credit card companies would tack on some out-of-country fees, so we just kept paying cash.
Now, since I've been HOME, I've gone back to my credit card ways.

Our dollar has done very poorly against the Euro, pretty much from the very beginning when it became the currency for a lot of Europe. I think it was around 2000 when it started. Even back then, when our economy was good, this was the case.
Interesting... I never realised that, I guess because I've never looked at what the dollar does against the Euro. Usually I'm looking at what the pound is doing against both.

You mentioned how this was a trip of a lifetime and your report truly illustrates that fact. You obviously learned some important lessons in traveling through Europe many of which can translate to other destinations around the world. Has this trip changed your perspective on how to travel? For example, you learned the value of traveling light. When traveling to Disney parks will you continue that trend?
I'm looking forward to hearing about your future travel plans. Start saving those pennies and maybe I'll meet you on the road some day.
By taking a Rick Steves tour a few years ago, his philosophy encourages you to travel light. Considering that your lugging your own bags, it's pretty much a requirement or you'd be sorry. There are no bus drivers to do it for you. Many times we'd be dropped off in a small town and because the streets are so narrow, buses are only allowed up to a certain point, so we'd have to carry our own bags several blocks to our hotel. It was great to just have a backpack and a small carry-on.
Now for Disney, I haven't learned to do this, since I generally play golf down there as well and requires a lot more luggage. But for Europe and other trips I plan to travel much lighter.

Snapfish is running a 35% off special right now, so I ordered my Rome book (117 pages ) on Saturday and will try to get my Florence book finished this week as well. I'll definitely let you know when I've got them. And since Germany is very much on my radar for my next foray to Europe, I would LOVE to see your books and hear all about your trips.
And yes, you must visit City Garden. Wait for a beautiful day and then come downtown -- it's all quite impressive and really makes you feel like St. Louis has the opportunity to develop into a major city. On warm days, it's fun to watch children running through all the water features in the garden. Even on cold days, it's fun to watch kids climbing on the various people-friendly sculptures -- although Pinocchio isn't one of those. But he sure looks like he's embracing life.

Packing light for WDW: Hmm, not really. I'm actually MORE exhausted at WDW after spending full days/evenings in the parks, so I don't want to have to wash out clothes. Plus, the shorts or jeans I generally take to WDW would take way too long to dry. Plus, with DME and luggage on wheels, I find it no trouble at all to take everything I might need with me. But I definitely leave my hair dryer at home and take minimal makeup to WDW (because it all gets washed or sweated off so soon anyway -- I might as well show everybody my "true" face ).
Douglas I would LOVE to meet you on the road some day! And I would definitely want to meet you for a !

You can't go to Germany too soon. I have a good friend who just retired to Oberammergau and has given Craig and I an open invitation to stay with him. So, being the type A Passporter kinda guy that I am, the next day I came up with an itinerary for a trip to Bavaria (Romantic Road, Munich, Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, Zugspitz, Berchtesgaden) and Austria (Halstatt, Salzburg, Vienna). I'm definitely doing it and I'm thinking sometime within the next 3 years. Chez wants me to keep her in the loop because she would love to explore Vienna. Craig is happy because I included Salzburg in the mix.
