Christmas tree decorating? About This Page:

Hmmm, does anyone know how to get your tree decorated just like the ones you see in the stores without hiring a professional? [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img] I always hate the way our tree looks when I'm done with it. It always looks so empty. I'm thinking of doing a google search to see if there is a site out there than can give tips/suggestions.

Does anyone decorate their tree just like the stores do, with all the lights, ornaments and stuff? I like the way it looks where you can't even see the tree, just all decorations!

Well, first I think you need a kajillion $$ worth of decorations! [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/smirk.gif[/img]

I'm pretty sure they use a Rule of 3, where they group ornaments together in triangles of 3, then they fill in the spaces.

I was just looking on line yesterday for some tips... I'm bored with my usual style and want to do something new this year. One Martha Stewart tip is to use 100 lights per foot of your tree... don't just circle the tree, but wrap each branch from base to tip...

We try to! A few tips: use lots of lights (at least half again what is called for on artificial tree instructions) and wrap the lights around the branches a time or two instead of just draping them (my DH gets this job). Then hang the garland, draping it to give the effect of snow drooping from the branches (we use both a beaded garland and a poofy garland, going opposite directions). Ornaments should be hung from both the tips of the branches and from about midway on the branches, with progressively smaller ornaments as you go up the tree. If you use tinsel (we don't because our cat enjoys eating it), the more the merrier, but don't just toss it on the tree - hang it neatly.

My mom puts up lights first about like 10 -12 strands, then she puts up garland (6-7 strands) and then she puts up the ornaments. We only put up ornaments no glass bulbs. This is for the big tree.

We have to have a smaller tree in the dining room as we have so many ornaments so the small one gets 3-4 strands of lights, 2-3 strands of garland and only Disney Ornaments whatever theme she decides (last year it was all Mickeys) this year we haven't decided.

We have artificial trees so we can bend and move branches around if need be to hang things so that makes it a bit easier.

It depends on the type of tree you have, too. But, 100 lights per foot will give you a pretty decent "burning bush" (as my DH says! [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]). Start at the trunk and "weave" the lights up and down along one side of the branch to the tip and then back again to the trunk. There are some green plastic thingies that that twist on to the lights/tree to hold them, too.

Next should be the bead garland, or whatever garland you want to use (if any). Drape it in a circle around the tree (think Cinderella's dress), stepping back frequently to check it for evenness. Tuck the ends into the center of the tree. It takes a LOT of ornaments to get the department store look. The trick is to use a lot of colored balls (either multi or monochromatic, depending on the look you want) and hang them inside (if your branches permit) and on the outside. After the balls are on, then you can add your "theme" ornaments. The trick is to check frequently for your spacing. The rule of 3 helps, too, try grouping 3 different ornaments together around the tree. AFter all that is done, you can add stems if you want (glitter, flowers, pinecone bunches) tucking them into the branches between the ornaments. Sometimes, depending on the stem, you can do this step before the ornaments, but some tend to get "lost" that way.

I loooove the way the trees in the stores look, especially with the coordinating wrapping paper and everything. But I don't think I could ever attempt one, because I have to have my Disney ornaments, my pengiun ornaments... [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/crazy.gif[/img]

I can't give you any tips because my tree is only 4 feet tall! *LOL*
