Today is Veteran's Day (US) and Remembrance Day (Canada). I thought I would post a thank you to all our veterans.

In Flanders Field by John McRae

In Flander's Fields the poppies blow,
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing fly.
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead, Short days ago,
We lived, fell down, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw,
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, tho poppies grow,

Thanks to all our veterans, and thanks to you, Deena, for posting one of my favorite poems. Here's a bit about the author of the poem, John McRae, for anyone interested:

The author of probably the best-known poem of the First World War "In Flanders Fields" McRae was a Canadian doctor who was appointed brigade surgeon with the First Brigade of the Canadian Forces. The death of one of his closest friends the day before caused him to write this timeless poem, which reflected his growing disillusion with the war and the tremendous human cost. It is in part due to this poem that the poppy was adopted as the Flower of Remembrance.

Many thanks to our veterans and may we never forget them.
Here is another poem that seems fitting on this day. This was my dd's grandfathers favorite poem. Unfortunately it was read at his funeral just this past August. I think about him often and especially on days like these since he too was a veteran.
High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
