As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

DD *failed* AGAIN!!! major vent
The first time I felt sorry for her, but this time we had lots of practice doing the maneuverability course. She's had an attitude about the whole thing, really being a little you-know-what about it. I even took her to run through it right before the test and she was fine, but during the test what does she do? Backs STRAIGHT up over a cone. Instant fail. The tester told me she didn't even turn the wheel *or* stop when she touched the cone (which if it hadn't fallen over, she would have been OK still), which I could see from the window, but DD insists that she did it right, it's the cone that was in the wrong spot. Whatever. I am *SO* ticked off at her right now. She works until 10pm tonight and tomorrow night, so there I go again having to pick her up from work. I told my mom that if she failed one more time, I was making her quit, b/c I am *SO* tired of driving her 30 minutes each way to work, she turned 16 in June and needs to get her doggone license, so now my mom is on my case about what a terrible mother I am for not "making the sacrifice to drive DD to her job."
Part of the problem is the driving school told them to look in their mirrors for certain "cues" to do the test and did *NOT* teach them to actually look over their shoulders and behind them! Needless to say, they're getting a call from me on Monday. DD doesn't have to change lanes much on the ride from work, so I never noticed before, but yesterday, she just flipped her signal and moved over without even looking (and almost hit an SUV). "They never had us do that" she says. OMG! Anyway, she is off most of next week for the MOA meet, but she testing one more time the week after that and that's it as far as I'm concerned. In Ohio, if you fail 4 times, you have to wait 6 months, re-apply for a temporary license and start the whole process again. I may send her to live in Oklahoma after all!

Re: DD *failed* AGAIN!!! major vent
My mom was the opposite- she wanted to take me to work and didn't want me to ever drive.
I failed the test the first time b/c when I was backing up, I looked in my mirror and then also looked over my shoulder. The guy said "You used your mirrors and looked over your shoulder- pick one or the other, you can't do both!". I had never heard of anything like that b/c I know you can't always rely on the mirrors. -Steph

I hate it when my DD ignores advice just because it comes from me. Dawn, I think calling the driving school is a good idea. Maybe if your DD thought she would have to give up her job until she can learn to drive, it would motivate her to try more closely. Good Luck.

Re: DD *failed* AGAIN!!! major vent
Here's lots of pixie dust for you and hoping that DD gets it right. I was not allowed to get a job UNTIL I passed my drivers test - my mother told me it was a statement about me taking responsibility for myself since I would need the job to give them (DParents) money to cover my insurance coverage on their policy.

Re: DD *failed* AGAIN!!! major vent
I got the same speech in reverse...I couldn't get my license until I had a job (at least in the summers - she really didn't like me working during the school year), and could pay the first 6 months of insurance up front.
I had to show that I would be responsible enough to earn the money for the car insurance, before I could drive the car.
Your daughter will pass eventually...It sounds to me like they are being a bit ridiculous at the testing place, not that it's her fault.
I wouldn't be too hard on her. If it upsets you this much - imagine how it makes her feel. This is supposed to be an exciting time in her life, the next step toward adulthood. Please don't make it about you.

Re: DD *failed* AGAIN!!! major vent
She'll get it sooner or later...
As a teenager, I couldn't get a job unless I had transportation set up in advance, without relying on family members or friends...
That rule applied to my children also, they had to learn independence and responsibility sooner or later and if they were "responsible" enough to get a job they needed to be "responsible" enough to have a way to get there and home without inconveniencing others...

I couldn't get my license until I had enough money to buy my own car and pay my own insurance
Good luck to DD

Re: DD *failed* AGAIN!!! major vent
for you and your DD! I think teaching your kids to drive is one of life's most trying experiences! DD's birthday is in January so when she took her test almost two years ago, the weather was horrid. It was cold and snowy and slushy. You couldn't even see any of the lines on the road of the DMV course. The plows were going around continuosly and the roads were still awful. DD took her test anyways. After anxiously waiting in the parents waiting room for quite some time, DD finally reappeared. She passed her test AND she knocked over the cone on the 90 degree backing. Apparently the tester took pity on her and didn't mark off for it because of the bad weather. The roads were slippery and he chalked it up to that. I was rather stunned that she could pass. Thankfully her driving skills have improved greatly! I guess the lesson she learned was to take the test when the weather is bad.

Re: DD *failed* AGAIN!!! major vent
Good Lord. What an ordeal. I feel for ya, Dawn. My kid had no trouble getting her license, as in Texas the testing is done WHILE YOU LEARN. That's so crazy, no? As soon as you finish driving school and turn sixteen you just go to DPS and pick up your license. Let me add that Jordie has had 3 major accidents in 2 years. One sent her to the emergency room and totaled her car. So I'm all for tougher testing. Good luck. Sucks that you have to drive her to work, though. Ugh.
