As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!
Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Dial-up? DSL? Cable?
What do you use for your internet service?
At home I have dial-up (so slow!), but it's only $21/mo. I called my cable provider and they have an intro. price right now of $24.95/mo for 3 months, but I would have to upgrade my cable service (I have 'classic' but need 'gold' or digital which would cost another $10-20/mo) and after the 3 month intro. period, the "high-speed internet service" goes up to $42.95/mo
What??!! I just can't justify doubling my provider but hate how slow dial-up is! And the cable company is the only provider in our area for DSL (or cable or whatever it is!) right now - no Verizon (yet?!?).

Re: Dial-up? DSL? Cable?
We have DSL now . . . we had cable when we lived in Maine. We had a satellite dish so we only needed basic cable to have the cable internet. Our bill altogether for that was around $40.
Since we moved to Florida, we got DSL through BellSouth, which is our local phone company here in Pensacola. We started out with the least expensive DSL they had and it was just as slow as dial-up, so we upgraded to the next highest and it was slow at times as well. We got a mailing not too long ago telling us that they were starting an even faster DSL program (called DSL Xtreme) and it ran for $49.95 per month but since we have our local and long distance through them, we get a $10 per month discount. So, for local phone, unlimited long distance and DSL Xtreme, plus the plethora of taxes and fees, we end up having a $115-$120 bill from BellSouth per month. (It seems a little steep, but I just tell myself that it is 3 things rolled into one bill and they add too much tax to things!!! Plus, if you divide $115 by 3 it is around $38 per service, so it doesn't look SO bad then!!!)
We are very glad we have our DSL though, because it doesn't tie up the phone line!!! Lately, I have been on the phone with my sister talking about her wedding and it has been nice for her to say "Go look at such-and-such site" and I can click right over to see it, instead of having to write everything down and "look at it later"!!!

Re: Dial-up? DSL? Cable?
We have cable. We had to have the whole house re-wired, as our old lines were not able to handle the digital. (It was okay, as I also wanted HBO so I could watch 6 Feet Under, and it is only available in digital here)
I have no clue how much we pay for our cable, it is billed through the cable.

Re: Dial-up? DSL? Cable?
We have high speed broadband in our house, our service provider is Pipex, I'm not to sure what it costs a month, I think it's roughly £20.00.

Re: Dial-up? DSL? Cable?
We've been having this debate as well. At home, we have dialup, and after being on high speed at work, it's quite a shock to the system. Most times I can live with it though, and for only $21 a month, it's reasonable.
We've been debating about switching to cable, but that's at least $40 a month. We actually had the guy come out once, but we didn't have our virus software up to date, so he couldn't install it We've just never gotten around to doing it again!

Re: Dial-up? DSL? Cable?
We have Comcast, which is cable. It is more expensive. Between that and the microwave I've become a very impatient person.

Re: Dial-up? DSL? Cable?
We just switched over from dialup, at $20/mo, to Verizon DSL which is about $35 more a month. For us, it was well worth the money. Not only is it faster, it doesn't tie up our phone line! With 2 teenagers in the house - the computer and the phone are in constant use!
No cable available here yet, although I think they just upgraded our cable yesterday to digital capabilities, so maybe it will be here soon!

Re: Dial-up? DSL? Cable?
I'm in the same boat. I have dial up...it's SO slow. We want DSL, but it's not available in the area. Drive 7 minutes into the city of Buffalo, though, and the phone company (Verizon) offers it.
If we were to call the cable company, it would be very expensive because we have Dish Network!
ARGH! I sometimes miss my job because of the T1 line!!!! If I'm desperate, I go to my mom's...she's got cable for her internet!

Re: Dial-up? DSL? Cable?
I've had Comcast for about two years now. However, we can write it off our taxes because of DH's job and his need for it during off hours.
The kids are on dialup because we need to get them wired, and who had time to run either cables or get new wireless cards (and pay for it too!).
It is not cheap, but so worth not having the phone lines tied up!

Re: Dial-up? DSL? Cable?
I've had the Bellsouth DSL for several years now and just love it. I think it runs around $49 a month, but I too write it off as a business expense. I finally got my dad to convert to DSL lite from dial up and it's like night and day for him.

Re: Dial-up? DSL? Cable?
We have dial-up. DH has looked into DSL/cable, but we just can't justify the cost right now. I don't mind using dialup and he mainly is onthe net at work (he's a computer programmer, so he can go online while he's working )

Re: Dial-up? DSL? Cable?
We have Verizon DSL and I love it. A few months back we had to go back to dial up for a few days and I was lost. It costs around 30-35$ and it billed right in with our phone. Joanne, Verizon hasn't gotten to Kingston yet huh? How frustrating. I liked the DSL better than the cable b/c I too have the old, analog style system and the upgrade and continued charges were way more expensive than DSL. Verizon usually has an offer for new customers to get the hardware and first month for free too! The only cost for us was an initial start up fee of 35$(I think) and then the monthly charge. Well worth it in my opinion.
