Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Your town

OK, I'm going to be nosey about where you guys live. Here are a few questions for you with my answers:

Where do you live?
Is it a town / city or village?
Where is it close to?
Tell us something about it - maybe it's history, major industries or useless facts, that sort of thing.
Do you have any tourist attractions in your town?

I live in Maidstone, Kent.
It's a town with about 120,000 people living here.
It's about 35 miles south east of London.
Because of its proximity to London, a lot of people who live here commute into the capital. The biggest employer is probably local government, but once it used to be paper mills - Maidstone used to be full of them, but they've closed as the years went on. Because the town's close to the motorway network, it's also for distributing goods to supermarkets across the south east of England.

The town was named in the Doomsday Book in the eleventh or twelfth century and in 1381, Maidstone resident Wat Tyler led a peasant's revolt against the government of the day. He was killed in London for his trouble.

On the outskirts of Maidstone is Leeds Castle, known as the "loveliest castle in the world" - it dates from possibly as early as 860. We always have the Museum of Kent Life, which explores life in our county (state) over the years, including hop picking - hops are what's used to make beer and Kent used to be a huge area for hop picking. Again, that's changed over the years.

Re: Your town

Where do you live? Whitefield, NH

Is it a town / city or village? Technically it is a town, but in actuality it is a village - in fact, the name is the Village of Whitefield.

Where is it close to? It's close to Mt. Washington - the tallest peak in the Northeast.

Tell us something about it - maybe it's history, major industries or useless facts, that sort of thing. - We are celebrating our 250th anniversary this year - so there are lots of little celebrations this year, starting with a Bonfire in January, and an ice skating party in February. Our town surrounds a little common - with a gazebo in the middle, that is flooded every winter for ice skating. Kind of your archetypical small town. Probably 1000 people total live here.

Do you have any tourist attractions in your town? We live in the middle of the White Mountains - so we are near to a lot of attractions, but the only ones right in Whitefield would be the Mountain View Grand Hotel - one of the original grand hotels from the beginning of the 20th century, and Forest Lake State Park - a lovely beach on the lake. We also have the Weathervane Theater in the summer - classic New York quality summer stock theater, with a children's theater internship program. We are within 15 minutes of such attractions as Bretton Woods Ski Area, Santa's Village and Six Gun City theme parks.

There is no major industry here - other than tourism and forestry.

Where do you live? - West Mifflin, PA
Is it a town / city or village? town
Where is it close to? Pittsburgh (about 10-15 minutes from the city)
Tell us something about it - maybe it's history, major industries or useless facts, that sort of thing.
Do you have any tourist attractions in your town?
Pittsburgh is widely known for the Steel factories & I believe at one time 95% of all steel was produced here. We also have several neat tourist attractions Mt. Washington ( not a real mountain like yours Marie) which is a little community & you can go there & look out over the entire city. Of course, you go there on the incline.. which is a trolley that literally goes up & down the mountain(hill?)
We also have the Point.. a beautiful area where the Allegheny, Monongahela & Ohio rivers meet..
I'm sure there's more.. my DS is studying Pittsburgh this month in Social Studies so I'm sure he will be able to tell me more.

Re: Your town

Where do you live? I live in a little town called Rockville Centre on the south shore of Long Island. About 15,000 people.
Where is it close to? It's about 30 minutes east of NYC. But the best is it's only about 4 miles from the ocean.
Do you have any tourist attractions in your town? Not in our immediate town but we have some of the prettiest beaches on the eastern seaboard. Of course that's just my opinion

Re: Your town

I am pretty close to Colexi's mom. Bethlehem, Ct. is a very small town (pop. approx. 4000) in northwest Ct. About half way between Torrington and Waterbury. It has a typical village green. Because of its name it is called Connecticut's Christmas town. People come from all over to our post office to decorate their cards with special ink pad stamps- there's a new one every year( called a cachet). We also host a 2 day Christmas festival the 1st weekend of December and have one of Connecticut's biggest fairs in Sept.

Re: Your town

Where do you live? Frankton, Indiana

Is it a town / city or village? It's a very small town.

Where is it close to? We're 10 minutes away from Elwood,IN, which is "The Heart of Indiana". Elwood is called that because if you look at the map, it's located about where the heart would be on a person.

Tell us something about it: Frankton was a Gasboom town. It was founded in 1853 by a man named Francis Sigler. He lived in a hollowed out oak tree. His son, Jacob Sigler named the town after him and our main street is called Sigler Street. Every year, we hold Heritage Days, our town festival. It's held in a cow pasture(they do clean it up nicely). Frankton is a farming community. We have a population of maybe 2000 people. No stoplights at all. We have one grocery store, one bar, an American Legion Post(#369-May Berry, named after the first American killed on foreign soil, I think). We have a post office, library, two banks, a seasonal ice cream shop, a greasy spoon(small diner), a jr/sr high school and an elementary school. We also have one gas station. The town is a half mile wide and a mile long. You can easily walk it in an hour.

Do you have any tourist attractions in your town? No tourist attraction, unless you count the Heritage Days festival.

Way back when it was very busy, we had a hotel! Of course it was called the Frankton Hotel. Now it's apartments, I think. The train used to stop often, and it's only been in the last 25 years that they took out the tracks.
We're quite proud of our sports teams, basketball, softball, baseball, but I think all towns/cities are like that!

Hope you didn't fall asleep reading this! LOL!

I live in Cincinnati OH, USA

Definitely a city, but a smaller one

Cincinnati is on the Ohio River..about five hours drive southeast of Chicago and north of the mason dixon line.

Cincinnati is known for the Underground Railroad. We are currently building a Underground Railroad museum. We also are the city of flying pigs...because we were a major market in the turn of the century for pork bellies. We are home of Proctor & Gamble the maker of Charmin, and other fine products.

We have PARAMOUNT KINGS ISLAND which is a major amusement park here in the midwest. We also have two waterparks and every summer we get TALL STACKS which is when the old riverboats come to town.

Re: Your town

I live in Menomonee Falls.
Its a village of about 28,000 people.
I would say that its about 10 miles from Milwaukee.
There really is nothing big about the place. No major tourist attractions or things. Although we do live close to a town called Lannon where there are a lot of working quarrys and a lot of the homes around here are built with Lannon Stone.

Where do you live? St. Mary's City MD
Is it a town / city or village? It's a wide spot in the road, population maybe 200.
Where is it close to? We are about 75 miles straight south of Washington DC
Tell us something about it - maybe it's history, major industries or useless facts, that sort of thing. St. Mary's City was the original capitol of Maryland. St. Mary's College is there, which was one of the original women's colleges, and is now on the list as one of the best liberal arts colleges in America. They have a very well known Archeology program and have several active archeology sites centered around the Historic site.
Do you have any tourist attractions in your town? Historic St. Mary's City. We also are the destination site of the Governor's Cup Yacht Race every spring (they start in Annapolis).

Where do you live? Winnipeg, Manitoba
Is it a town / city or village? It's a city of about 680,000 people
Where is it close to? We're it, Baby! Largest centre in Manitoba. We're an hour north of the Canadian/American border (North Dakota/Minnesota).
Tell us something about it - maybe it's history, major industries or useless facts, that sort of thing. Winnie the Pooh was named after Winnipeg. We're the geographic centre of North America. Nickname: Winterpeg, Manitscoldhere.
Do you have any tourist attractions in your town? The Forks where the Assiniboine and Red Rivers join has been a marketplace for 6000 years when the first Natives started using it as a transportation and trading hub. Assiniboine Zoo is a lovely zoo/park area. It hosts the annual Pooh Friendship Days, complete with Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore and Tigger. Lower Fort Garry is one of those museums with actors dressed in period costumes as they would have been when the Voyageurs (settlers) arrived. They keep talking about building a "Pooh-seum" museum, but so far, it hasn't happened.
