So I was watching this movie A Simple Plan last night (which is a very good movie, BTW) and Kylor happened to walk through while the guy was dialing 911 on a rotary phone. "Mama, how do you dial on a phone like that?" LOL. Rotary phones will be antiques soon.

Tape an old Andy Griffith Show and explain their phone to him! They just called the operator and she got the other party.

We have 2. A pink princess phone and an avacado wall phone in the kitchen. DF is Nostalgia-Man.

It is funny how things from our past have become so obsolete! Does your son know what a record album is or an 8-track tape is? DH and I also have an old rotary phone in the house as a back up, because if the power goes out, the cordless phones don't work. And, I still play some of my old record albums! They sound fine on our turntable (another oldie but goodie!) and I certainly don't want to replace all of them with CDs.

My grandmother lived out in the country while
I was growing up. Not only did she have a rotary
phone, she had a two-party line. She shared her
line with another family so sometimes you'd have
a bunch of people on the line before you figured
out who the call was for.

My dad still has two rotary phones in his house. They are technically owned by the phone company, that's how they did it a long time ago. They have tried to take back the one in the kitchen, it is the older one and is now worth something as an antique, but when my mom lived there two, she wouldn't let them have it! There is one just like it in Driving Miss Daisy, in Jessica Tandy's house. Dad only got 911 service, and thus digital lines, in the late 1990's.

I grew up in a <font color="red"> small </font> town in the Adirondack mountains of Upstate NY. The next town over from us was the last town in NY to get electricity, in 1955. The phone in the house where I grew up is literally wired into the wall; you can't take it off and have to take the cover off to service the phone. We had a party line up until I was about 10 years old, sharing our line with at least two other families (The last four digits of our phone number were 3782; the others on our line were 3784 and 3788). It was fun as a kid to listen in on other people's conversations, but annoying when you were on the phone and people kept "clicking in". As soon as our phone company offered private lines (around 1980), my mother insisted we get one. My grandmother had her party line for about 10 years after that.

Older people in the town where I live now sometimes give their phone numbers as letters. For example saying RE2-2600 instead of 732-2600. Anyone out there remember the song "Beechwood4-5789"?!
