Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

School Start Times

I was at a meeting last night where we were discussing changing the start time for high school. Currently, the high school starts at 7:30am and the elementary school starts at 9:00am. We are talking about switching those times, since studies show that teens are more productive with a later wake time.

So, I'm wondering - what time does school start where you are, and would you agree that the high school should start later?

The high school where I taught starts at 8:10. I can definitely say that my first class of the day was less alert than subsequent classes.

Our middle/high school day is around 7:30 - 2:07. We are part of a 4 district system, so each district has their own elementary schools.........ours is 8:30-3. For our middle/high school, they rotate periods everyday, so the first period is not the same subject everyday and therefore, the sleepiness is spread out amongst all the classes! Having DD being a sophomore, plus an athlete, I'm not sure I'd like a later start time. As it is now, most of our sports start at 3:45, so they are over mostly by 5:30, maybe an extra hour for a bus ride. Some swim meets don't start until 8:30, making for a late night when you have to get up at 6. However, if they started later, everything would be pushed back an hour (maybe not the swimming) and trying to start games at maybe 4:45 especially in the fall is not going to happen around here due to darkness. Then they'd be missing school. I also think that it would just cause the kids to stay up later, instead of 10 or 11 doing homework (she has plenty of friends who do that) they too would be up and hour later, getting the same amount of sleep (instead of getting up at 6 would get up at 7). I can also see the elementary parents not happy, as instead of their "babies" getting up at 7 or later, they'd now how to get up at 6. The kids have had plenty of friends in elementary school whose parents would drive them to school for 8:20 instead of putting them on a bus at 7:30 or 7:40 so they could get more sleep. Can't see them making that an hour earlier on the little ones.

I teach in the same district where my kids go to school. The middle school (where I teach) day goes from 7:45-2:40, high school day is 7:50-2:45, and the elementary school day is 8:40-3:30.

My building (9-12) begins at 7:38. My husband's building (a 7-12 building) currently begins at 7:28....though it might be pushed back slightly to 7:40 because of buss issues next year.

There are a few issues with a later start time - first is high school sports. If school starts later, will it get out later? And if so, will athletes have to be excused earlier in order to get to contests on time?

The other issue is after school jobs - when my building had a late start schedule, many of our students found themselves "locked out" of hours at their part time jobs because students in neighboring schools could take earlier shifts.

The sports issue came up, but when it did parents of hockey players were all for the later start times because the kids can't get on the ice before 8:30pm and are often home as late as midnight. Trying to get them out of bed at 5am is agony.

Younger kids seem to have an easier time getting up early. My DS was once a 5:30am early riser, and now at 16 you're lucky if you see him before 11! Not that I'm complaining. I'm not an early riser, either.

Our HS starts at 7:25am and gets out at 2:15pm

Middle school is 7:30am - 2:20pm

Elementary is 8:45am - 3:45pm

I really don't have an opinion about wether or not HS should start later. My DD is very good about getting up and out to door on time, so we don't have an issue.

The schools around here all start at random crazy times due to bus schedules and the large amount of charter schools and magnet programs.

Personally, I think the earlier hs start time was better. My middle school started at 9:30 and my hs started at 7:20. I loved getting out of hs at 1:50. I could get my homework done and still have time to do what I wanted to do after (relax, go swimming, go horseback riding, see friends, whatever). I think with kids being older and having more general freedom in hs, they appreciate that time.

I'm also wondering why the boy in Joanne's story had to get up at 5am when school started at 7:30? I started at 7:20 and got up at 6:20. Wasn't ever tardy.

The buses begin pickups at 6am. I drive my son to school, but if I made him take the bus, he'd need to be at the bus stop at 6:05am and he would ride around on the bus for over an hour picking up other students. It's nuts. I know that they have a lot of area to cover, but if you're at the beginning of the route, it's a LONG bus ride. They won't add more buses either.

DD's school is in session from 8:00 to 3:35. The campus she attends has grades 4-12 in 2 buildings. Start times are the same for each building.
The other campus that houses 3year old to grade 3 attends from 8:15 to 3:45, allowing travel between the 2 for families with kids at both - they're about 3 miles apart.
There are buses, but only 3 pick up locations throughout the metro-Indianapolis area and none on our side of the city, so almost all kids are driven.

Our elementary schools have staggered start times due to buses. They range from 8:10-9:05 and dismiss between 2:25 and 3:30. Middle schools are either 8 or 8:20 and get out at 2:45. and all the high schools start at 8:17 (not a typo really 8:17) and high school dismisses at 3:18 (seriously where do they get these numbers) and the high schools also have zero hour that start at 7:25 for certain classes.

as far as jobs it really isn't an issue because most places teens work are used to it. and since when is it the school districts responsibility to be worried about the kids jobs (sorry I'll get off my soap box) and the kids that actually have games out of town they always leave class early and if it is a local game they dismiss at the regular time.

When our kids were in high school, the school day started at 8:50am and the elementary schools started around 8am. The high schoolers need the extra sleep. But I will say that the parents also have to help in the process. Our kids were not allowed to have cell phones or computers in their rooms at night. Also, they had to go to bed at a reasonable hour. Our son use to complain that he would be the only freshman in college with a set bed time.
