Anyone else's kids so exhausted after kindergarden the kid goes insane? - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Anyone else's kids so exhausted after kindergarden the kid goes insane?
My son comes home from school and eats a snack. I try to get him to lay down but he is so insanely tired he just starts a huge fuss and screaming fit. Didn't know if anyone else has had trouble with their kids and what advise they can give.
Last year was my daughter's first year at full day kindergarten, and for the first week she was exhausted at the end of the day. I think it takes some time for them to adjust, but after the first week or so she was fine. We did adjust her bedtime a little, we started going in a little earlier so I think that helped. Hope it gets better, I know it's not fun to have a crazy tired, screaming child
Instead of trying to get him to nap, it might be better to sit him in a comfortable soft place with some books to look at. Maybe sleep will come, maybe it won't, but having a rest break will help. No need to get him upset.

Is he getting enough sleep at night? My kids are asleep by 8PM (2nd and 3rd grade) and up at 6:30-7AM, getting a good 10 hours a night. Our pediatrician says kids need about 10 hours a night until about 5th grade or so. Not sure if it's true or not for all kids, but it does seem true with mine. If they get less than this it's quite obvious the next day Maybe try getting him into better earlier at night and skipping the afternoon nap? Just a thought.
He goes to bed a 7 so he gets enough that way and is up at 6. One day last week he fell asleep at 5:30 and slept until the next morning. guess he'll just have to adjust. He's chipper in the mornings doing the Oomie Zoomie dance it's just after school he has trouble.

I agree with a decent bedtime. I think 8 is reasonable throughout elementary school. I would also nix the nap-or trying to get him to nap. What you don't want to do is have him sleep in the afternoon and then not be able to get to be early enough for the night.
Is he in full day kindergarten (mine went in the good old half day days)? If so he may need some physical outlet after being in a "quiet" place all day. Can yo get him to do something to use up the excess energy? I had a friend who used to get her kids to do laps around the outside of the house but if he can bike, shoot baskets, run, do an exercise video-anything to get the energy out.
If he has only had a few days of school, he may also just be stressed out. It is a huge adjustment, especially if this is his first experience with being with kids all day long.
I would give him a good month to settle in. I know that seems like forever, but it takes time.
And get rid of TV and video games while he adjusts.
How about some reading/snuggle time after the snack. You could just say that you missed him so much while he was gone that you'd like a little cozy time with him. Maybe he'll fall asleep, maybe he won't. But it would be a nice way to rest after a busy day and I bet you'll enjoy the snuggle time too!
I agree with PP...forget about the nap.
My DD when she did Kindergarten 2 years ago she was so HUNGRY and tired at the end of the day it took a while to get used to it but it will happen! It is an adjustment...early bedtimes are key as well. He'll get the hang of it soon it may take a while. If he only does a half day wait til he goes to 1st grade it is another adjustment.
GL!
Definitely get rid of the nap - just a fight and really at this age they are a bit too old and it will mess up bed time. I would go for a quiet time activity - even watching a TV show to just veg out after a busy day.
We have one starting kindergarten this year as well. She is also more tired and irritable after school so she is really ready for bed by 8 (sometimes earlier).
exhausted by bed time, but no such luck. He gets up at 7 am, goes to school (first grade) at 8:30 and comes home at 3:30....plays and does homework, has early supper then straight to football practice at 5:30, gets home at 8:15ish, takes a bath and watches a little tv, and by 9 pm he is still wide awake complaining about bed. What more can I do?

He might also be going through a growth spurt along with a new school routine.
Hang in there and if it doesn't change in a week or two I would talk with your
Dr. If he is going to bed early and sleeping straight through without getting up
then I would guess he's growing. Maybe some quiet time and not an actual nap.

I agree that the practice is WAY to late at night and 9 p.m. might be too late for
a bed time. While you can't change the practice time you can move his bed time
up on the nights he doesn't practice. I try and plan my DD's activities around
her sleep time so it isn't an issue. I changed dance schools so she would practice
earlier in the afternoon. Good luck!

Kelly, with your little boy, he may be "up" because of football practice. That is a really late practice for a first grader and even adults can have problems falling asleep after they've exercised. I suspect that you can't change the football schedule but maybe talk to the coach about ending with some calming exercises. If he's cranky or not functioning well in school, you may need to look at an alternative to football.
