Losses, Wheelchairs, and Pixie Dust! TR (June 21-28) - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears

Moving on with the current of the years.

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. Losses, Wheelchairs, and Pixie Dust! TR (June 21-28)
So here we are on the Magical Express. Me, Preston, and Caden. I'm letting my mom know we made it safe and sound. My husband is taking the picture. Oh how I love those sparkly floors. The Magic begins.
A good friend arrived at our house to bring us to the airport just as the heavens opened and a monsoon hit. No kidding. I was drenched just getting to the car. Oh well, no big deal. We're from the midwest. We can handle all kinds of weather. We get to the airport, luggage checked in, waiting at our gate and.... our flight gets delayed two hours. Thank you thunderstorms. Meanwhile, I get a call from my mother. Lightening has his our house. Apparently all was okay after some restarting and rebooting. No smoldering flames, all is good.
We board the plane and off we go. We land and it is raining in Florida, but just a bit. We get on the Magical Express without a problem and we don't have to wait long. Caden is so excited he can barely contain himself.
We get to Port Orleans Riverside. We are stunned, first by the heat and humidity (Ack!) but then by the beauty. I had done online check-in and I wasn't sure what to expect. However, we got a free room upgrade to a Pool View room. We were on the ground floor, near the South Depot in Oak Manor and it was breathtaking! I was so excited! We decided to skip the park for the night and just check out the resort. My luggage and the boys' luggage arrived a couple hours later, but not my husbands! We were a bit worried and I realized I hadn't put his Disney Magical Express tag on the same handle as the rest of ours. I was beginning to wonder if it had wandered off. I showed up later thankfully. Whew.
We ate dinner at the Riverside Mill. Wow was it good. It was my first introduction to Quick Service Dining and Make Your Own Pasta, and it became a favorite! I'm just figuring out how to attach pictures, so bear with me. After that we headed to bed ready for the next day.

We had our wake up call from Mickey at 6:00 a.m. and we were up and moving. I forgot to say that we had gotten an order from Garden Grocer the day before too. I highly recommend them. We had plenty of fluids and breakfast bars and fruit. We were ready for the parks!
We headed to Magic Kingdom nice and early. We were there for the Opening Ceremony, or whatever the call it. Rope Drop in other words. It was awesome, but it was the only one we made that week.
We headed in and hit Dumbo right away. I mean it's our first family trip there, Dumbo is a right of passage I think. We hit Peter Pan next (my favorite), It's a Small World only had a 5 minute wait, so we hopped on that. Then we his Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The kids loved it! They went on Splash Mountain after that. I just wasn't into it. Besides my dad kept calling me, causing me to drop my phone as I was checking that wonderful Verizon Disney Mobile App and it acted weird the rest of the week. Oh well, at least I have insurance.
We continued to ride for awhile, had lunch at Cosmic Ray's, then we went back to the resort for awhile. Swam, hung out in the air conditioning for awhile, then headed back to the park. We went on Pirates of the Caribbean, say the Move It! Shake it! Parade again for the 3rd time that day. We always seemed to catch it. Then we got fastpasses for the Space Ranger Spin and we into the Monsters Ince. Laugh Floor. We loved that! My husband and the boys were all wearing the same shirts and they got picked out for the comedy sketch. It was awesome! Mike W. called them a boy band. We headed to the Dessert Party after that and this is where the first major drama began.
We waited in line awhile. My husband ran the boys to the bathroom. I was talking to the people in front of us, one of which turned out to be a teacher too. I got my bracelet and the lady reassured me they would be back around to give the rest of my party bracelets. We didn't see them again. It's hard for a tired 7 year old to wait in line patiently. Caden kept wandering around, spinning, almost getting stepped on. We kept pulling him back in line. Finally we got in, and we asked the lady for more bracelets. She handed them to me and we headed to our table, which was wonderful. Right up close. I looked around. No Caden. I asked Tim where he was, thinking maybe he saw him somewhere. Nope. The panic began. We looked around, we asked the lady at the front. She insisted he had come in with us and he hadn't come back out. No Caden. We looked under tables, behind the ropes, calling his name. At one point I heard him calling, "Daddy, Daddy!", but I couldn't find him and was just gone. Just disappeared. Now, the Electrical Parade was starting so it was dark everywhere. I had all sorts of thoughts going through my head, like someone had grabbed us and dragged him out among all those people. I was just sick with fear. Tim was running all over the Tomorrowland Noodle Station looking for him. No Caden. The lady (Becca) I had been talking to, and her mother, offered to stay with Preston while my husband and I left to go look for him. The Cast Members had all hopped on it and alerted security. They were canvasing the area. I felt odd about leaving Preston with virtual strangers, but it was a contained area with lots of CM's nearby, so I took off. We went out calling for Caden on Main Street as the parade was going by. Just as we made it out there a CM told us they had found us and to stand right by the pole for the Plaza Ice Cream place to wait for him. That about killed me, not being able to get to him. The CM assured me, calmly as I was freaking out, the the manager was bringing him to me and if we moved they would lose us. He came running into my arms about 2 minutes later. I had a tag on his bag that saved the day. They knew who to look for and all was well. We were had a hard time calming down.
Here was the amazing part for me, the part that still brings tears to my eyes. There were people who had paid for this Dessert Party to spend time with their families, complete strangers. They gave up that time to go look for my son. They were in tears along with me, they applauded and hugged everyone when he was returned, and I cannot thank them enough. If you are reading this, and you were one of them, I just want to say thank you and I have a special place in my heart for you.
After that, the manager came over and gave us a fastpass for our "inconvienience". I was shocked. I mean, we were the problem, not them, lol. We took it, but Caden was too shaken up to go anywhere after that. We had some desserts, watched the amazing fireworks, and reassured Caden we wouldn't be letting go of him ever again. We headed back to the hotel, and slept amazingly well despite it all.

Animal Kingdom Day. I was excited about this. I had heard it was the hottest park, so I dressed us in nice light clothing. Even shorts for me (shocking!). We got to the bus stop fairly early. The bus just wasn't coming as quickly has it had before. I think we waited the longest on this day.
On the bus, Preston realized he forgot his bag. It had his autograph book and his mister fan in it. Nothing valuable, but dissapointing. He was sure someone was going to steal it. Some wonderful lady was sitting next to him and did her best to reassure him that it would show up, but he was just in a pouting mood and was mad about it the rest of the morning. We ran into her later in the week and said hi, and she had to 2nd glance us when she noticed I was in a wheelchair, but that's another story.
We got there about 1/2 hour after rope drop (it was EMH morning). To our dismay we didn't realize that the safari didn't open for another 1/2 hour. So, we got fastpasses. We walked the forest trail near there (forgot the name at the moment) and some some gorillas and other cool creatures. It was hot. We were drenched with sweat. We headed over to Expedition Everest. My mother was calling me about family drama, so they went on it. I was really okay with that. It just looked a little too intense for a chicken like me. I settled my mom down. They got off it. Sure enough, the boys didn't like it. They got freaked out by the backward dark part. It was getting hotter. We headed over to Dinoland after that. I knew Dinosaur would be too intense for Caden, so he and I picked up some ice cream bars and went on Triceratop Spin and played in the Boneyard for awhile. It was actually slightly cooler there because they had fans pumping the air in. It was getting to be time to head to the safari, so we wandered over that. It was hotter still. See a theme here? Mister fans weren't even cutting it. At this point I had been in no air conditioning. So we went on the safari. It was okay. To be honest I was a little dissapointed. I think it was because our tour guide. She talked so fast and it just seemed so rushed. We couldn't take any kind of pictures because just as she would pull up to an area with an animal, she would slam on the gas and we were flying down the road again. Don't get me wrong, I can handle rough. I just felt it wasn't the best quality. She sounded like she had memorized lines and she just wasn't into it. Whatever, it was cool to see the cheetah and some other animals. Maybe it's because we are so spoiled going to Brookfield Zoo every year? After that we headed over to Kali River Rapids and got Fastpasses. On the way we spotted Flik and got a picture and autograph.
We stopped for lunch at Yak and Yeti Counter Service, because the kids were hungry and it's what we were near. There were not tables in the shade. We were burning up, and then to heat warm food on top of it. Ugh! I had the Crispy Honey Chicken. It was pretty good, but I thinking I would have enjoyed it more if I weren't already melting. At at point we were reaching temper tantrum stage. And I mean me, not just the kids. I just wanted to go home. Resort home, not home home. Tim convinced me to get in some air conditioning. He just didn't want me to regret anything if we left at that moment. So we went to go see it's Tough to be a Bug. I had wanted to see Finding Nemo, or Lion King, but the times just didn't work out. I hated It's Tough to be a Bug, and though the kids were warned, they didn't really care for it either. At this point, I was overheated and the air did me no good. So we left. We didn't make it over to Camp Minnie Mickey, or the Jungle Trek, or Kali River Rapids. We left with a flock of other people all saying the same thing. Way too hot, not enough air conditioning. Oh well, not our favorite park. Maybe I'd like it more in cooler weather. We did get to see DiVine, which was cool. So, we headed back and relaxed at the hotel a bit.
We headed to Downtown Disney. Big mistake. We were still so overheated and grumpy, and we didn't expect the crowds to be as bad as they were. We were snapping at each other, it just wasn't a magical ending to the day, despite the nice boatride over there. We ate at Earl of Sandwich, which was yummy. It was the best part of the evening. We did a little shopping, got tired of fighting the crowds and each other, and headed home. It didn't help my husband embarrassed himself. We went in Goofy's Candy Co. and my husband loves Jelly Belly's. Somehow he missed the sign that said it was about $13 a pound and filled a whole bag. When he came over I about freaked out. The lady next to me started cracking up because her son had just done the same thing and she insisted on getting her son and his picture holding up the bag showing what $100 worth of jellybeans looked like. I was laughing too, I mean.. it was funny. He was embarrassed though. I convinced him to just tell the lady that he didn't want them. She took them back without a problem. I'm sure that kind of stuff happens all the time. (Though I believe he blamed it on our son.) Anyway, we left after that, his ego wounded.
We headed back to find Piano Bob playing at the River Roost. I got a drink. I needed one. It was the Blue Glowtini and boy was it gone quickly. Anyway, we had a good time there, but Caden was super tired so the two of us headed back to the room. When I got back to the room, I saw a message that Preston's bag had been found. I texted my husband to get it on the way back to the room and all was well. It was a nice ending to a rather disappointing day.
Up Next: Will we make it to Fantasmic? There has to be extra magic for a birthday day, right?
I want to start this part of the TR by saying that my PTR plans were a joke. Seriously. I mean, we switched all our plans around, park days, dining plans, everything. It was good to be prepared for change, and it worked out. But HA! All those beautiful itineraries... in the garbage. I'm okay with that though. It's about learning too.
We were all craving a good breakfast, so we at the resort that morning. Mmmmm, Mickey Waffles. It was Preston's Birthday, so were making sure he had his birthday button. Oddly enough, the permanent marker was rubbing off. Gotta love humidity and sweat.
So, we headed to Disney's Hollywood Studios. As we sat there waiting for our bus, we saw 3 Animal Kingdom busses. Hmmm, where were they the day before? We got on the Hollywood Studios bus pretty quickly and off we went. We got Fastpasses first thing for TSMM, and got in the Stand By line. It ended up only being about a 30 minute wait. We loved it! We loved the Great Movie Ride. We were right in the front so it was fun when the ride got hijacked. At one point the CM (the gangster) was talking about the skeleton's looking like here mother-in-law and I said we must have the same mother-in-law. That got her cracking up.
We got Fastpasses for Star Tours and we rode a few other rides. I don't have pics of this because I forgot the camera and they are on my phone. It was getting to that hot part of the day again and we were getting hungry. Knowing DHS doesn't have the best CS places, I conviced DH to pay OOP for 50's Prime Time Cafe. We had cancelled our ADR's, but thankfully we got in without a problem. It was a fun time, the food was good. Love that pot roast. We met a nice family from Missouri who's daughter was having a birthday on the same day. The birthday cupcake was delivered and we were refreshed enough to make it through the rest of the day.
We rode Star Tours (boys loved it) and TSMM again. We kept missing the Indiana Jones thing. I really wanted to see that. Oh well. We did the Backlot Tour (fun!) and the Muppets 3D things (also fun!). We did some more things. Oh got Pooh and Tigger's autograph. (Poor CM's in those costumes in that heat!).
We ended up eating at Pizza Planet. The food was eh, but the atmosphere was fun because it kind of lulled my boys into a overstimulated stupor. We wandered around taking pictures, getting pics with Lightening McQueen and Mater, and we ran into the Mom from the missing child fiaso. We hugged again and they were truly happy that were enjoying our vacation and no major bumps in the road had happened.
We made our way to the Fantasmic line... 2 hours ahead of time... They had 2 showings of this and I can't say enough that it is much better to go to the first one. We got in 2 hours ahead of time. There's a concession stand so we were able to get some drinks and ice cream. It was getting darker, so therefore cooler. The time actually flew. We had great seats 5 rows up front and center. Yes, we got a little misted, by the water, but it felt good. We LOVED the show. I'm so glad we were able to see it.
After that we were heading out of the park since it was getting ready to close. I knew my husband was disappointed he hadn't ridden Rockin' Roller Coaster yet, so I convinced him to take Preston and go. The ride said 40 minutes, but it was less than that. Caden and I hung out outside and I had some more ice cream. Tim and Preston loved the ride and were very glad they were able to get on it. We were able to get on the bus without a problem. Caden wanted to see Piano Bob so Tim took him there while Preston and I headed back and collapsed.

It sounds like you've had a few bumps in the road, but that most of them worked out! I'm sorry you had a rough day at AK--its my favorite park. I usually find it cooler than some of the other parks because of the trees--but we're used to humidity. Can't wait to read the rest!
Thanks for the encouragement! Yes, Cheryl, it was terrifying. He's kind of a fearless boy, and a healthy dose of fear would do him some good. I think he's learned his lesson. I hope so anyway!
We went to Epcot today. We got there about 10:30 and went straight to the Character Spot while my husband went and got FP's for Soarin'. That was the ride I was most looking forward to! The kids were excited to meet some of their favorite characters. I want to get on our Photopass account and see what they look like, but I've been busy unpacking and doing laundry, so I haven't had the time to do it yet.
We decided to go tour the World Showcase. We made it through Canada and about that time we were starting to get hungry. I told my husband that there was a fish and chips place near the Rose and Crown Pub. So we headed that direction and didn't see it right away since it's around the bend. We went in and asked for directions and the kind CM pointed us through the other door.
As we came out, I think the heat was beginning to get to me because as we stepped off the curb and into the street I found that I had trouble moving my foot. I mean, I was trying, but it seemed to be sluggish. Apparently I was in the process of passing out because next thing I know I was spread eagle on the cobblestone street in severe pain. My husband came rushing back over and I was howling like a baby. I knew my knees hurt, but my right more than my left. There were CM's on the scene as quick as lightening and there was a Dr. going by who ran over to help. He assessed the damage, which didn't appear to be more than a skinned knee at the time. I knew something was going on internally though, because it sure hurt more than a skinned knee. I was in so much pain I couldn't pinpoint it. They came out with ice bags and a bottle of water. I was seated. Then they moved me to a table in the shade. Another manager came out to check on me. It was a lot of attention I tell you and I was so embarrassed! Here I come stumbling out of a Pub, and I hadn't anything to drink! I put my leg up while my husband got some fish and chips and some more ice. I noticed my ankle beginning to swell and bruise. I couldn't put my weight on my right leg without quite a bit of pain. So, what to do. I told him I had read that we could rent a wheelchair for less than $15 a day. If I could have made it over to First Aid, I probably could have gotten one free, they told me, but it was quite a hike away. So, the traveler store that had them was nearby so we rented one.
At first I just wanted to leave the park, because I didn't want to drag the rest of the family down with me. I was in pain and miserable. However, my husband said that if I was going we all were going because we are here as a family. The kids were really looking forward to doing more things, so I toughed it out. We rode Soarin' (loved it!) and some other things, but decided to save Test Track and Mission Space for the next day. As long as I wasn't putting weight on it, I seemed to be okay. We had some snacks at the pastry place in France. Napoleon... mmmmmm. We had dinner at Sommerfest in the German Pavillion. Tim got his beer. It was yummy. We stuck around for Illuminations. I hadn't planned on taking them up on the wheelchair access only area. I don't know why, I just felt I was taking advantage of it somehow. The CM insisted and we ended up meeting some friends while we were there. It was a great view, but I was just ready to collapse at that point. We went back to the resort.
I asked at the front desk and they were able to loan me a wheelchair for the rest of the week free of charge. It turned out to be a good thing, because I sure needed it. Caden wanted to see Piano Bob, so Preston took over pushing me back to the room. Ha. I thought I could handle it. Not! So, a Brazilian tour group came up behind us and they helped push me over the bridge and essentially out of the way. I don't really care how I got there, as long as I got there.
It wasn't the day I had hoped for by any means, but I'm glad I stuck it out so my family could still have some fun. When it comes right down to it, my husband was afraid to go to the park by himself because he relied on my research and planning to tell him what to do! I discovered my bruises were quite extensive and my ankle had swelled enourmously. So, I put up my leg and rested and conked out. Despite the rough time today, I was thankful for the people on the scene to help out.
Up next: Did we make it back to a park as planned? Any more losses? It's about time for some decent pixie dust here! Aren't those curbs in the UK dangerous??!!
So it was back to Epcot again today. This time I found out how friendly and accomodating Epcot is for people in wheelchairs. I hadn't planned on getting a GAC card, but one of the CM's at our resort told my husband about it, so he took me in to get one. He just wanted to make sure I didn't get stuck in line for a long time, or have to walk farther than I could. So, after we got that, my dad called again and caused me to be distracted. At that moment, Marie came out the the boys wanted to rush over there for her autograph. So I have Tim the photopass and I was getting my GAC card put in my Passporter pouch. Somehow in the shuffle, the photopass card apparently was handed back to me (I don't remember this) and it was lost. We discovered this because the boys went over to ride Test Track and I didn't have the card! I was distraught, but mainly because I was tired and in pain. I knew we could get another one. I'd taken a picture of the one we had! So, Caden wanted to ride it again, so we got Fastpasses for a later time. We went over and rode Mission Space. It was fun. We did the Green team. No puking today, thank you!
We headed over to Club Cool. My husband was really excited about this! He tried the Beverly. He drank it. He said it was bitter, but that wasn't the first taste that hit you. We liked the watermelon one from China the best.
Then we toured the World Showcase for awhile, ate mexican food at the stand there (it was yummier than I expected it to be) and it was time for the boys to head back to Test Track again. I told them to drop me off at First Aid so I could rest. My leg was really aching. So they brought me in, the nurse put more ice on it and I laid down. I fell asleep for awhile. I was awaked occasionally by people coming in for bandaids due to blisters mainly. It felt good to rest and have my leg up for awhile. My husband came and picked me up and off we went. He told me he had stopped by the camera store and taken care of the photopass problem. He was so proud of himself for taking care of it. It was really cute.
We toured the rest of the showcase, riding the rides in Mexico and Norway. I didn't like Maelstorm. I just didn't get the point of it, but it could have been it was because I didn't realize how bumpy it was going to be and I kept gasping in pain. The boys loved it though. We had some pasteries in Norway ( the almond pretzel was yummy and I don't even like almonds that much!) We saw the Chinese acrobats (I love to watch them!)
We were on our way to get Pooh and Tigger's autographs in the UK when Caden fell on the curb and skinned his knee. It was a pretty good scrap too! We didn't have any bandaids with us. I thought we did, but they were in my other bag. The gift shop didn't have any, so we just dabbed it with a napkin and he toughed it out to see Tigger (his favorite).
We left right after that. I did some laundry and we just hung out at the resort that night.
Up next: Why did I buy ponchos? What does my mom want me to do about the tornado sirens going off every night at my house?

Wow great updates, glad that even with all the rocks getting in your way you are making this a great trip for all. Glad that the bag, and especially Caden were found so quickly, how wonderful to have so many people helping you at a time like that, I would have been in such a panic. So sorry about your leg, and the heat and humidity which I am sure was making it even worse. Hope that even with everything going on you were still able to enjoy the rest of your trip.

We were a bit worried and I realized I hadn't put his Disney Magical Express tag on the same handle as the rest of ours. I was beginning to wonder if it had wandered off. I showed up later thankfully. Whew.

I discovered my bruises were quite extensive and my ankle had swelled enourmously. So, I put up my leg and rested and conked out. Despite the rough time today, I was thankful for the people on the scene to help out.
