As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

I am trying reaaaalllllly hard not to overpack for this trip. But it goes against my every fiber to NOT have an outfit planned for each of my girls, 5 and 1, for each day. DH and I can handle planning on "2nd-wears" on shorts, etc...but kiddos just get grubbier. I laid out all the clothes for the girls in "days" and tried to plan a day short but it was driving me bonkers....
in order to NOT go bonkers in planning DH and I's clothes (which take up a bunch more room anyways!)... if I plan on hand-washing a few pairs of shorts (just to freshen them up mostly), will they dry in a day or so? I'm not talking denim or even khaki shorts- but lighter weight shorts- kind of swim-trunk like material.
I have seen several references to that felsnaptha soap that is a bar-laundry detergent. Can't find it anywhere. If I just take a little sample pack of liquid detergent, that should work shouldn't it? Or even just using showergel?
I don't think the shower gel will work very well. I did this once with a shirt
and you could still feel the soap. I would look into those packing cubes that
PP's have talked about. WWW.ebags.com has them and maybe you could get
a rush shipment. If not try to pick up some oversized ziplock bags (bigger
than the gallon size) and try to combine socks, undies, extras and maybe
the girls outfits by day. Good luck!

I looked at the site, but didn't know where to find packing cubes. What are they?

What about using shampoo to wash shorts, etc.? It's mild and would probably rinse out good. I was wondering about using it. Has anyone ever tried it before?
I found a packet of liquid tide in the travel section at Target. I think that would work better than shampoo or body wash. I would just do load one afternoon.
Are you trying not to check luggage? Each of my girls had their own carry on and I could fit ALOT of their clothes in there. Their clothes are small and you can pack alot of stuff.
I always overpack. I can't help it. It is a disease that I have. I need to have options. So, I will always have to check luggage. It is a problem, I admit it.
I do have the packing cubes that Teresa and KJ are talking about. I them and would never pack without them ever again. It keeps eveything organized. I have sets for all of us so I know who's stuff is who's .
Good luck with the packing. I despise packing, even though it means I'm going on vacation!

That's a good idea, "giving" the little ones their own carry-on (although I'm sure Mom or Dad will be doing the actual lugging around of same.... ) That's one way to pack more clothes without exceeding one's personal carry-on limit of one bag plus one personal item.
As for overpacking, I swore that after a (non-DCL) cruise where one suitcase held every single shoe combination imaginable that that would never happen again. Refusing to carry any bags except one's own also helps.
I limit bags to a carry-on because for me, it's easier than waiting in baggage claim, or worrying about layovers or plane delays. As well, coming back from Disneyland a few weeks ago, I saw a green duffle bag on the runway at our layover, and two or three cars passed by it without stopping. It lay there for about 20 minutes before someone picked it up. Hopefully it got to the person to whom it belonged....
We did laundry on the cruise ship. I went to the laundromat before we left and bought three boxes of detergent from the machine. This is the best idea and it didn't take all that long.
Target sells a "sink load" packet of detergent in their travel section, along with the little packets that are 1/machine load. All Mighty comes in a teeny tiny bottle and is concentrated, so it does 2 loads. I'd say, if you want, maybe do a load in the sink and then use the dryer to dry them, so you're not using up as much of your time and not worrying about clothes drying in the humid Caribbean! (I live in the desert, our clothes is usually mostly dry coming out of the washer! )
Don't short the girls on their clothes. I'd say at least one for each day and then you can wash theirs if a "costume change" is neccessary. Ultimately, a change or 2 of their clothes doesn't take up enough room (IMO) to make that much of a difference. I usually plan on rewearing my denim stuff, so I take half the amount of jeans/capris/shorts and then enough tops (which take less room). I never short myself on undies (if I planned to do laundry), again, because does half the undies really save that much room?
But I think we're good at packing light, because for a family of 4 to WDW for a week, we took 1 big suitcase for DH/me, 1 big suitcase for DD, 1 big suitcase for DS (kids' suitcases had room for souvenirs on the way home) and a carry-on sized suitcase for bathroom stuff. If we had to, we could combine the kids or use their smaller suitcases (though, we didn't have to lug diapers and special food/formula/etc).
Figure lightweight shorts should dry in your stateroom in about a day, two at the most (that's our experience). It's not hard to find nylon sport shorts, capris, etc. these days - those would dry even faster.
By the time you're half-way through your cruise you should have at least one washer load worth of clothing (even if you don't need it all for your cruise). Compared to hand-washing and waiting, a couple of bucks to wash and another couple of bucks to dry is worth the convenience, as far as I'm concerned.
