As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Hi everyone. We are going to try and make our first trip over to US/IoA on our trip to Disney in a few weeks. We have two 1 day/1 park passes to use and I thought, with my husband being more of the adrenaline junkie, that he would enjoy IoA more than US. I like some "intense" rides, but not all. For instance, I do most of the rides at Disney except the intense version of Mission:Space and Tower of Terror. I don't like drops, which is why I don't do the really intense roller coasters (although I can do all the coasters at the Disney parks).
I have heard so many people raving about The Mummy ride. Can anyone tell me how intense it is? What is it like? Does it have any large drops? Does it go upside down? I'm trying to determine if I can go on it or not. I think DD will be too short still so DH & I would have to do a rider swap.
Also, what about Jurassic Park, the ride? It looks like it has a HUGE drop! That ride looks so cool to me, but not sure if I can handle the drop at the end? Can you compare it to the drop on Splash Mountain or Expedition Everest?
Thanks so much. I am the type of person who likes to know exactly what a ride does before I go on it. The "element of surprise" is not fun for me

The Mummy has no real big drops. It's kind of like EE at AK. It's a much better ride than EE imho; a lot faster. The drop at Jurassic park is longer and steeper than Splash Mountain, but it's a great ride - it's over before you know it. Must sees at Universal:
Terminator 3D (movie)
Men in Black
Earthquake
Mummy
Shrek 4D
IoA
Spiderman (coolest ride in Orlando)
Hulk coaster (very, very intense)
Dr. Doom Fearfall (fairly intense)
Jurassic Park
Dudley Doright Whipshaw falls (you will get soaked)
Have a great time
Drahgon coasters (Fire and Ice - both very intense)
After checking out all the rides on Universal Orlando's website, I'm realizing that many of the "intense" rides that DH would like are at IoA. But The Mummy and some of the things DD would like are at US. Now I'm not sure which park to do. If we already have 1 day/1 park tickets for IoA, can we upgrade them at the gate for 2 days/2 park tickets?

You can upgrade your ticket at Guest Relations. Note: use the Guest Relations office on the inside of the park if you can. It usually has a shorter line and free A/C!
The Mummy coaster is very similar to Everest, except that it's completely indoors and darker - and a little faster. It's intense in a scary sort of way. No big drops, no flips. I love it! If this helps, we just went with a friend who hates RnRC but she liked the Mummy. Her 8 yr. old son was more afraid of the theatrics than the coaster itself if that makes any sense. But OMG, it is so fast and fun!
You could probably hit the high spots of both parks in one day - we did it over Labor Day weekend.
Jurassic Park's drop feels very similar to Splash Mtn. But according to the Universal website:
Quote:
Of all theme park water rides, the 85-foot plunge is the longest water descent ever built.
Splash Mtn's drop is 52.5 feet in comparison. Tower of Terror is about 157 up from the beginning - but you don't drop completely down in the ride.
Marv did a quick trip report of their one day trip to Universal. Check it out, it might be very helpful to you as she had similar issues with coasters and thrill rides:

I just went back and reread what I wrote about Mummy and I don't explain much (because I can't remember much! ). I don't want to scare you off from going though. I seriously don't even remember the ride was fast! I was kind of in a scared shock, but that's just me. I did the same thing on RnR the first time I rode it. The one thing I do remember from Mummy is that it kind of stopped between segments (or at least went really slow). I really liked that part being I'm kind of a ride wussy. It seemed like it gave me the chance to get my bearings and get really excited for what was coming next. Maybe someone who remembers the ride can comment better on this.
As far as the drop on Jurassic Park, to me it didn't feel that much different from Splash Mt. I think it's more of a secure feeling because of the size of the vechile you are in. At the Jurassic one, you are in a bigger vechile, not single person in the little boat like Splash. The vechile I was in only had 3 other people in it and I was in the second row, all alone but in the middle of the vechile. I just got misted vs. drenched like I always do on Splash. But, the man riding alone in the front seat got drenched. I suppose it has something to do with weight in the vechile and where you are sitting as to how wet you get. For me, it didn't really matter, I was already soaked to the bone from the other 2 wet rides!
I thought both were fun. You should give them a try, at least once!
I would say that what you need to know - and what I didn't really appreciate before I went on it - was how fast it would go. That was a shock to me and something I'd have preferred to have known beforehand.
I'll agree with chezp - it is fast! I'm so proud of you Cheryl for riding it!
I wondered which was faster, EE or Mummy, so I did some internet research. Top speed on the Mummy is 45 mph, Everest is 50 mph. Pretty similar. In comparison, top speed on Space Mtn. is 29 mph.
Here's a little more info from Wikipedia:
Quote:
The track is 2200 ft. long featuring no inversions, 80 degree banked turns, and a 50 degree angle of descent.
I personally love the mummy ride. I have not yet been on the Expedition Everest at Disney yet, but I don't like Tower of terror either because of the sudden drops. I also am not a HUGE fan of Splash mountain although I will go on it if bribed but I haven't been on it in over two years. I don't like drops at all but Mummy is fine with me. NO drops , It is fast though but to me that was no problem as I don't mind fast. Now Jurassic Park ride isn't one of my favorites due to the drop, although it isn't sudden if you know where its at (As soon as you see the huge t-rex you will go down) and I find it not as bad if I sit in the very back. But I hate the fact that since I am smallish in frame, the lap bar doesn't ever go all the way down on me (like I would like it to) so I am always terrified of flying out. I don't go on the ride very often either (I prefer to get out of it if I can) but it isn't horrible If you know what to expect and when to expect it.
Its funny because although I don't like sudden drops like those on tower of terror or similar, I don't mind roller coasters that drop and loop as long as there is a harness type hold on them (gotta feel secure and completely strapped in) and even then I am scared the first time I ever go on a new one.

ROTM at USF (as opposed to USH) is highly themed. a lot of the intensity doesn't even come from the physics itself but rather what's going on around you at any time. this isn't everest in that it all just comes to the acme of a giant animatronic swiping at you, the elements to the theming are in most every inch of the attraction.

......being "not the greatest fan of roller-coasters"....I must say that The Mummy ride is perhaps one of the BEST rides that I've been on...EVER. The combination of theatrics...special effects...and one heck of a great indoor coaster ride...pulls it all together for me. I was a bit nervous the first time I went on...but, being a BIG fan of the Mummy movies...I had to go on. Once the ride was over...I walked RIGHT BACK TO THE BEGINNING OF THE LINE....and went on again......and then again! (thank goodness for a light crowd day!) After the third time the wife gave me the "are you insane" look....
......I will personally endorse this ride as one you'll love...trust me!!

I love this ride!! its fast and it goes backwards, seats 4 across. its not "scary" per se. its really fun.
And I also love jurrasic park , that seats about 5 or 6 across if you like splash mtn I think you will like JP.
