Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Please help me understand the new restrictions when buying resale

We are getting closer to taking the plunge. We will be at Disney in June and are thinking of setting up a meeting with Disney if we decide to buy direct. My hesitation is that we prefer Grand Floridian as our home resort and I really prefer not to have the minimum 150 point buy in required to buy direct. I feel we will only need between 75-125 range, since we would utilize the bank/borrow feature. DH is now saying he could settle for the Poly if he has to which is why we are now trying to decide what's best: buying direct 150 at Poly or looking for a resale contract that better suits our preferred choices.

I know that there have been recent restriction placed on resale. Can someone clarify what those restrictions would be? I know we would loose the discount annual pass purchase option and we could not use our points for cruises or adventures by Disney. We are ok with that. Would we be able to add the Dining Plan with resale points? This is one feature we may want to use at some point.

Thank you for helping us understand the recent changes.

Yes, you can add the DDP and would only pay a few dollars more per person buying it at full price.

As for discounts, you don't get those, true. However, they're not that dissimilar from Disney Visa discounts, so if you've that cc, you'll not be missing much. You still can use DVC member lounges at the resorts but not the one in Epcot, I believe, and can't attend member-only parties and other special events.

What might be to your best advantage (if 125 points is roughly your financial max) would be to buy a 75-100 pt. resale contract and once that closes, add on 25-50 pts. bought directly from Disney. You have to buy a minimum of 25 when buying direct. That way, you'd get the member benefits.

Btw, current direct buy-in is 100 pts., not 150.

One thing to be aware of is that everything else bought from Disney (tickets, DDP, MM, etc.) is paid for when you book your DVC stay. You don't have the PIF deadlines you get with a package or room-only. That could be a drawback possibly, especially if you are looking to go back shortly after becoming members.

You can add and pay for the dining plan up to 48 hours before checkin. Your tickets can be purchased on the wdw website or you can use a reseller but to book your fastpasses using the sixty day advantage you would need to have them in place and linked to your my disney experience sixty days out.

i think the suggestion of a resale contract combined with a 25 pt add on through disney is a good one!

That's a great idea! Would they have 25 points for the other resorts (Grand Floridian)?

We do have the Disney Visa, so we are covered there.

I did not realize the current buy in was at 100...that's great!

Probably. No way to know without calling DVC which you can't do until after your resale contract clears DVC, and you are officially DVC members.

Disney picks up VGF (and other) resales every so often via their "right of first refusal." The proposed resale contract must get Disney's okay before it's a done deal. If Disney thinks the price too low, they buy it, and the prospective buyer gets to start all over again. That's why buying a resale can be majorly iffy.

Grand Floridian has been sold out for quite some time. Currently you can purchase athe the Polynesian, Aulani, and the new Copper Creek Villas at Wilderness Lodge (sorry, I originally posted Boulder Ridge). Sometimes Disney has points they can sell you (via their own resale) at other resorts, but GF probably won't be one of them. It was sold at a limited number, and sold out fast.

That being said, you can stay there by owning at another resort, but you'll be in the 7 month booking window for it, not 11 months.

Just to correct one thing - they're selling the new Copper Creek at Wilderness Lodge. I only say that as it's totally different to the existing Boulder Ridge Villas. The new villas are being sold as a completely new entity - i.e. those who own at Boulder Ridge will not get home booking advantage at the 11 month mark for Copper Creek. I'm still trying to wrap my head around it....

Same here. That makes no sense whatsoever to me unless perhaps Disney thinks doing this will spur owners at BRV to buy CCV also, driving sales more than they otherwise might go.

That is my suspicion of Disney's thinking, but I wonder how many people who already own there would really want to add on there in Copper Creek? After all, if they already own through Disney, they could go through resale to buy more Boulder Ridge points....

We just added 100 points through Disney resale at Old Key West. Called them, told them what we wanted, waited a couple weeks until they found resale in our use year, and bought them. Full benefits as original sale because it's through Disney sales. Different than resale from individual owners or other companies. And the contract is through 2049 I think...same as our AKL points.

I'd speak to a representative, tell them you would want to buy at GF and how many points you want. Just be ready to pay for them when they come available. They won't hold them long before selling to the next person wanting them.

Versatility, maybe? If you already have 100 at BRV and can add another 100 at CCV, you could switch stays.

If you were wanting to combine points for one of the two, you could hold out for a larger villa at 7 months. You can do that, right?

I know we've fairly often seen availability for the 1br. at various resorts whereas there are no studios when we've played "7-month what-if."

Yes, that's true. You can do that - however we were told yesterday that there will only be four Grand Villas at Copper Creek, so if people want one of those, they'll need to have Copper Creek points.

My point wasn't clear.

I didn't mean to imply you can't add the dining plan at a later date, buy tickets after booking your stay or buy them from sources other than Disney.

I meant unlike a Magic Your Way package or room-only ressie, there's no $200 deposit with later PIF deadline.

There are two primary reasons why Disney chose to put in a new DVC resort at WL. First, adding the new rooms and cabins to the current DVC resort, Villas at the Wilderness Lodge or VWL (yeah, yeah, I know: Disney has renamed them Boulder Ridge Villas but I don't like that name ) would be problematic since the current contract for those ends in 2042. They're not going to offer new owners only 25 years on a contract. Conversely, DVC doesn't want to extend the contract years to current VWL owners since when they attempted to do so with Old Key West, it was nearly a disaster. Second, the occupancy rate at WL was by many accounts and reports below expectations far too often. Thus, the win-win situation was to build a new resort, offer 50 years on the contract, and essentially cut the main Lodge rooms in half. DVC rooms traditionally have a higher occupancy rate than normal cash reservations.

As for the perks and discounts on buying direct vs. resale? Those perks and discounts don't offer enough to offset the huge dollars savings of going resale. I've done both and strongly recommend going resale. VGF resale contracts are harder to find, but they do exist.
