Another Flight of Passage Comparison thread but to Mission Space Less Intense - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. Another Flight of Passage Comparison thread but to Mission Space Less Intense
I'm not a ride wimp, I'm really not. I've gotten older and my body just doesn't tolerate things the way it use to.
While I know there is already a FoP comparison thread on here, it doesn't really help me any as I've never been on the ride it's being compared to. Some people are comparing it to Star Tours (a cannot do at all ride for me now) but it seems like some who can't do ST can do FoP as supposedly the motion is more gentle. So for me, since I'm such an oddball, can you compare - if you can - the motion of FoP to Mission Space Less Intense? We tried that once years ago and it left me literally green. I say that because I had to get out of the vehicle ASAP and I was able to make it to a bench in the exit hall where I sat down and hung my head. A CM came along and told us we had to move along, we couldn't stay there but once I lifted my head to look at him, he quickly said "take as long as need." Supposedly that's a gentle motion too but I think it left me more nauseous that ST did. If my memory is recalling right, MS left me feeling sick for a couple hours after whereas ST went away fairly quickly.
So that's my tale and I'm sticking to it . Seriously though, for those that do MS less intense, how does FoP compare to that ride? TIA

I don't do mission space. To me FoP is more like Soarin with 3D glasses. I love FoP, my new favorite ride. Some will love FoP, some won't. I went today and the safari was worse as far as motion and being knocked around.

Have you ever done any virtual reality games or worn a virtual reality headset? I ask as that is more the sensation than say bumping up and down--Star Tours--or spinning--Mission Space. It is also not claustrophobic like Mission Space. There's plenty of room to move around behind and beside the ride apparatus. Once mounted and locked in, then the guest movement is limited, but no feeling of being closed in.
The "vehicle" itself moves minimally--think Soarin' after it goes up. The motion is sensed through some tilting and the visual effects. For example, when there is a sensation of flying straight down, there is no pull of gravity pulling you down as you may have in other attractions, the feeling is all done through visual effects.
FoP has quickly escalated to one of our family's favorite attractions due to the "how do they make that happen" consideration and the pure amazement.
As I have said before, I would hate for you to miss it!

I think this a significant point for everyone.
I’m wary of any virtual reality like this because it’s something few as yet have done. I haven’t.
I suspect unpleasant reactions may be similar to those when people began riding commercial airplanes. Reportedly, many more people needed barf bags then because the experience was completely unfamiliar and a shock to their bodies.
I’m wondering if people subconsciously expect FoP to be “just watching a movie,” a quite familiar thing, and consequently react more strongly to the feelings of movement which aren’t part of their past experience.
Watching a movie is not only a very familiar experience but more detached. We expect to be moved emotionally but not to feel any sensation of physical movement. Virtual reality jolts expectations as a result.
Just my theory.

My DH had real issues with Flight of Passage. I've just asked him as he did the less intense version of Mission Space a few years ago and he found Flight of Passage way more intense. I have to confess, so did I. I was really surprised there weren't more warnings about motion sickness, but maybe it's just us, as most people seem fine with it.
Personally I can't deal with anything where you dive down quickly (i.e. a point of view from a coaster) and that's what finished me off.
Thanks for posting this thread. We don't have plans to visit AK in the near future and not sure if we will visit again after actually going to Africa and being in a part of the country where the safaris actually walk through the animal's habitats but I have to admit I was curious about this attraction given how popular it is. I haven't seen the movie (not interested) but was curious why it was so popular. I think I'll be giving it a pass, even if we do ever go back to AK. I can handle Soarin' and I can handle Mission Space Green (Less Intense) but I have serious issues on Star Tours. Star Tours just makes my head absolutely SPIN! Also when we were in DL the other year, we did the Silly Symphony Swings and I thought I was going to fall over when we got off I was so dizzy. This is something that's happened over the last 10 years where rides like Star Tours just mess with my head. I think FOP would be a similar experience for me.

Many years ago there was an Alladin Virtual Reality 'ride' in Disney Quest. My DH and I felt terrible after riding it, but our kids did fine. I have to admit I have to close my eyes in Mickey's Philharmagic when they get to the carpet ride over Agrabah because the way the motion feels too. I have a feeling that FoP might be a problem for me, dang it. When we go back (probably late 2019) I'll likely try it and hope for the best. I do take Dramamine before park days now, which is something I never did until a couple year ago, and it helps a lot.

Yes! I remember doing that Aladdin magic carpet ride in Disney Quest! I felt terrible after riding as well. But, like you I now take Dramamine before park days and that helps with any motion sickness.
I'd like to ride FoP at least once to see how i do.

Hidden Mickey - I too have problems with the flying carpet portion of Mickey's Philharmaic and can't watch it.

It's ironic you mention this. I can ride in an airplane and I don't get nauseous but I do get dizzy. If it's very turbulent then I will get nauseous as well.

We did the less intense MS so there was no spinning but as I said, even just the backwards and forwards motion affected me more than Star Tours does. The small space didn't bother me though until the end when I couldn't get out fast enough. Once in and closed, it was dark enough that I didn't really know how small the space was.
So we aren't headed for Disney for a while unfortunately, but when we do, I wanted to try this at least once to say I did it. Can't do Star Tours, never did Mission Space (orange or green), fine on Soarin'. Also close my eyes during the magic carpet scene in Philharmagic. I take Bonine on parks days as well now since time has taken a toll on my adventurous spirit and my body takes over. lol

The second time I rode it, a few months later (July to December) I had a much smoother experience and would just let go of the handle bars if the down parts got too intense.
The first time I was also feeling nervous about fitting. Since it wasn't an issue the first time and I knew what to expect, the 2nd time I enjoyed the experience much more.

This is good news. I'll be ok if it dives and then I close my eyes. I can handle it for a few seconds, just not sure I could handle it for the whole time. But at least I have a couple of options to try.
