Forums Closed
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.

So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.

Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.

And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.

We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.

There are other changes as well.

Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:

We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.

It's time to move on and move forward.

PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.

But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.

So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.

And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.

That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!

If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.

So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Best wishes for a wonderful and magical new year!

Clueless about Pins

Okay, this is so strange guys. This morning I watched Great Hotels on Trv Channel and saw Samantha trading pins- I turned to DH and said, I think I would like to try that! Problem is I have no idea how to start. Then I read the past few posts about pin trading. Is this a sign maybe?? What do I do first???

The closest Disney Store to me is Fayetteville which is about 45 minutes away- not a problem though I can go on the weekend.

Could someone explain the basics, and also about trading with CM's? Or maybe point out a website I can go to??

Thanks!!!

Re: Clueless about Pins

Hey - it's loads of fun! Start by purchasing pins and a lanyard - the beginning of your collection - it's just that easy. If your intent is to trade ensure you are purchasing pins that are from TDS or the theme parks - CMs won't trade pins not Disney licsensed.

I personally like to collect pins that have significant meaning to me - ones from the resorts we've stayed at, Limited Edition releases, favorite attractions, and milestone events - and those I won't trade. But it's fun to pick up pins that may not have significant meaning or ones on sale specifically for trading.

Have fun with the obsession!

Re: Clueless about Pins

I recommend only trading with CMs. They do not own the pins they wear, and therefore have nothing to loose. They let you select the pin you want to take, and also let you select the pin you give them. I have found that they are a wealth of information as far as what pins are valuable; limited addition, Cast Member only pins, etc. I have received several wonderful pins that are worth quite a bit on the pin market due to generous CMs who were willing to take time to tell me why I should take a certain pin from them. And by trading with CMs only, you do not have to remove any pins from your Lanyard until you go home. If trading with other guests, you need to remove any pins you wish to keep, otherwise, to other guests, they are "fair game". I have found generally my trading experiences with other guests, ( I did this only a couple of times) to be somewhat stressful. One guy looked at my pins and snorted, "You have NOTHING I would even concider..." After that, I stuck with the pleasant, friendly and helpful CMs!

Re: Clueless about Pins

I usually stick to trading with CMs or children. I will only trade with children if their parents are with them, and I let them choose what they want and what pin they will give me. I've never had a child ask me for a pin that I could not part with. Usually they see a pin that I have that they mention when we meet. I can always make the decision to trade or not trade according to the pin, but I rarely turn down a request from a child.

I get pins from the DS when they are on sale to take with me to trade. Last time I found the Mickey State of Texas pins were very attractive for trading since they could only be bought at a DS in Texas.

Next time we go, I'll probably leave my prize pins at home and only take what I will consider trading.

Re: Clueless about Pins

Sounds great. I think my plan will be to pick up a few when I can between now and July to take with me in July. It will only add to the experience I think!

Already asked DH if he felt like a trip to Fayetteville - (Disney Store there) this weekend!

I also tried my first bid on E Bay last night but lost!

Thanks also, Steve, for the suggestions on the types of pins. I definitely would like to collect WDW and resort specific pins, Mickeys and Poohs.

Thanks for all the help!

Re: Clueless about Pins

As soon as you get to Orlando, make a beeline for Belz Outlet Mall - it's at the end of International Drive. When you get there, go to building 2, find the Character Warehouse, and check out the Disney pins on sale (check prices on back, the sale pins are usually $2.99 or $3.99 - better than paying $6.50). You can also purchase a lanyard here. Character Warehouse is owned by Disney, and all the merchandise comes from the theme parks, and, for the most part, is discontinued merchandise at half price, although they do have some new stuff at full price. This is the place to go for T-shirts as well...we got some for $9.99 each which were originally 19.99...Last year I bought a Sorcerer Mickey watch there for $16.99, which I found at MGM a couple of weeks ago with a $32.99 price tag...The CM's at Character Warehouse will also trade pins.

I did a trade with a little boy @ AK who wanted a pin on my lanyard quite badly - it was his favorite character - but he obviously wasn't into trading (no lanyard), so I told him to pick out a pin for his mom to buy for me and I'd trade him...fortunately, we were at a pin cart...the pin he chose was quite expensive, so I found a cheaper one and we made the deal...his mom was happy, I was happy, and he was ecstatic!

I agree that it's best to trade with CM's. I've gotten some really rude responses from guests who were wearing lanyards, but who wouldn't trade for "just anything"...Maybe I'm dense, but I thought the whole idea behind trading was to meet people and have a good time, and so on...
