Halloween, Hawaii and holiday celebrations - the Hawaii section THIS SECTION COMPLETED 1/13 - Page 18 - PassPorter - A Community of Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and General Travel Forums
As of January 1, 2019, we have closed our forums. This is a decision we did not come to lightly, but it is necessary. The software our forums run on is just too out-of-date and it poses a significant security risk. The server software itself must be updated, and it cannot be without removing the forums.
So it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our long-running forums. They came online in 2000 and brought together so many wonderful Disney fans. We had friendships form, careers launch, couples marry, children born ... all because of this amazing community.
Thank you to each of you who were a part of this community. You made it possible.
And a very special thank you to our Guides (moderators), past and present, who kept our forums a happy place to be. You are the glue that held everything together, and we are forever grateful to you. Thank you aliceinwdw, Caldercup, MrsM, WillCAD, Fortissimo, GingerJ, HiddenMickey, CRCrazy, Eeyoresmom, disneyknut, disneydani, Cam22, chezp, WDWfan, Luvsun, KMB733, rescuesk, OhToodles!, Colexis Mom, lfredsbo, HiddenMickey, DrDolphin, DopeyGirl, duck addict, Disneybine, PixieMichele, Sandra Bostwick, Eeyore Tattoo, DyanKJ130, Suzy Q'Disney, LilMarcieMouse, AllisonG, Belle*, Chrissi, Brant, DawnDenise, Crystalloubear, Disneymom9092, FanOfMickey, Goofy4Goofy, GoofyMom, Home4us123, iamgrumpy, ilovedisney247, Jennifer2003, Jenny Pooh, KrisLuvsDisney, Ladyt, Laughaholic88, LauraBelle Hime, Lilianna, LizardCop, Loobyoxlip, lukeandbrooksmom, marisag, michnash, MickeyMAC, OffKilter_Lynn, PamelaK, Poor_Eeyore, ripkensnana, RobDVC, SHEANA1226, Shell of the South, snoozin, Statelady01, Tara O'Hara, tigger22, Tink and Co., Tinkerbelz, WDWJAMBA, wdwlovers, Wendyismyname, whoSEZ, WildforWD, and WvuGrrrl. You made the magic.
We want to personally thank Sara Varney, who coordinated our community for many years (among so many other things she did for us), and Cheryl Pendry, our Message Board Manager who helped train our Guides, and Ginger Jabour, who helped us with the PassPorter-specific forums and Live! Guides. Thank you for your time, energy, and enthusiasm. You made it all happen.
There are other changes as well.
Why? Well, the world has changed. And change with it, we must. The lyrics to "We Go On" for IllumiNations say it best:
We go on to the joy and through the tears
We go on to discover new frontiers
Moving on with the current of the years.
We go on
Moving forward now as one
Moving on with a spirit born to run
Ever on with each rising sun.
To a new day, we go on.
It's time to move on and move forward.
PassPorter is a small business, and for many years it supported our family. But the world changed, print books took a backseat to the Internet, and for a long time now it has been unable to make ends meet. We've had to find new ways to support our family, which means new careers and less and less time available to devote to our first baby, PassPorter.
But eventually, we must move on and move forward. It is the right thing to do.
So we are retiring this newsletter, as we simply cannot keep up with it. Many thanks to Mouse Fan Travel who supported it all these years, to All Ears and MousePlanet who helped us with news, to our many article contributors, and -- most importantly -- to Sara Varney who edited our newsletter so wonderfully for years and years.
And we are no longer charging for the Live Guides. If you have a subscription, it's yours to keep for the lifetime of the Live Guides at no additional cost. The Live Guides will stay online, barring server issues and technical problems, for all of 2019.
That said, PassPorter is not going away. Most of the resources will remain online for as long as we can support them, and after that we will find ways to make whatever we can available. PassPorter means a great deal to us, and to many of you, and we will do our best to keep it alive in whatever way we can. Our server costs are high, and they'll need to come out of our pockets, so in the future you can expect some changes so we can bring those costs down.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your amazing support over the years. Without you, there's no way us little guys could have made something like this happen and given the "big guys" a run for their money. PassPorter was consistently the #3 guidebook after the Unofficial and Official guides, which was really unheard of for such a small company to do. We ROCKED it thanks to you and your support and love!
If you miss us, you can still find some of us online. Sara started a new blog at DisneyParkPrincess.com -- I strongly urge you to visit and get on her mailing list. She IS the Disney park princess and knows Disney backward and forward. And I am blogging as well at JenniferMaker.com, which is a little craft blog I started a couple of years ago to make ends meet. You can see and hear me in my craft show at https://www.youtube.com/c/jennifermaker . Many PassPorter readers and fans are on Facebook, in groups they formed like the PassPorter Trip Reports and PassPorter Crafting Challenge (if you join, just let them know you read about it in the newsletter). And some of our most devoted community members started a forum of their own at Pixie Dust Lane and all are invited over.
So we encourage you to stay in touch with us and your fellow community members wherever works best for you!

Tuesday 5 November – part four: going under the sea
When we came out of there, I was feeling hot, tired, hungry, and thirsty, so we remedied the last two at the snack shop, getting a tuna sandwich for me and a roast beef one for Mark, and two Diet Cokes, all for $14, which we thought was pretty reasonable. The sandwiches were huge, with big slabs of bread, and lots of tuna in mine. It was just what I needed, along with a sit down.
After we’d finished eating, we had a look in the gift shop, where we got some fridge magnets, a Christmas ornament, and a couple of postcards. I thought Mark might get some T-shirts in there, but he didn’t see anything he liked.
Our purchases made, I got our National Parks passport stamped ( Terri for that! ) and then we headed back to the car to drop that off and so I could re-apply my suntan lotion, as I was worried about burning. Joan (JoanW) had warned me a couple of times at Disney about the sun here, and I could certainly see why.
That done, we headed back …
….and went to see the USS Arizona anchor…
To the left of shot, in the distance you can see the USS Arizona Memorial
… then the Waterfront Submarine Memorial. Again, you couldn’t quite wrap your head around how many lives were being covered at this memorial – sadly the same story throughout the day.
We headed over to the USS Bowfin Submarine, but it wasn’t very well signposted. You actually buy your tickets ($10 each) at the gift shop, and they gave us a free reusable bag, which we thought was really neat then we headed on board. You get an audio guide, which was really good, and guided you through the submarine. You start on top, and I couldn’t quite get over how narrow it was. Sure, I’ve been on submarines before, but somehow this one seemed much more narrow than the others…
The view back to the Waterfront Submarine Memorial
You start off in the forward torpedo room (I think it was the forward one, as they kept telling us to go aft… )…
… and then make your way through the submarine. I have to be honest, getting through these things was a challenge. How the heck the sailors negotiated them so quickly, goodness knows! I think I just about managed, but I think there may also be some new bruises on my knees to add to the existing collection I have.
This was the officers’ quarters:
This is, I think, the main engine room – it’s the one that’s got the periscope in it anyway.
Then you get into the kitchen area, and where the sailors ate.
I was fascinated by the menu, which the captain had to sign off every day. It had a lot more variety in it than I’d expected…
Next came the crew’s sleeping area, with not a heck of a lot of room, and plenty of “hot bedding” going on, with one person getting up, and another straight away taking his place.

Submarine's are just crazy. I've toured two and cannot imagine living like that! I agree - excellent variety on the menu.

I've been on one submarine before when we visited the USS Intrepid in NYC a few years ago. It gives you such a greater sense of respect and sdmiration for the people who work on these things for such long periods of time, I don't know how they do it. I am not clostrophobic in the least and I had a hard time with the tight spaces for just the short period we were on board.
I'm glad you were able to spend a good amount of time at this National Park. There's a lot more there now than when I visited many years ago. I definitely need to head back there for another visit.
I don't remember a guide being on the Arizona Memorial when I visited. I just remember it being eerily quiet, the silence almost deafening.
The submarine is fascinating. I'm so glad the sailors ate well. Those are really difficult conditions to live in, and you're right...I have no idea how they maneuvered around in such cramped quarters...and with just a little bit of light, if you think about it!

I remember a couple of people saying how quiet it was on there, so I guess maybe the guide being on there is only a recent thing?

Gosh, I hadn't thought of that, but now you mention it, that's another tough thing to add to the list of living on board....
Those are some small spaces. Not sure if I could stay there for a long time. Hoping to make it to Hawaii some day and will have to check out those spaces!

Submarines totally creep me out. I just can't stand the thought of being under water and if something happens ...well you are out of luck. I also figure there must be great pressure under the water so deep too. It is very interesting to see. I have read how small and cramped the quarters were down there and I can see for myself now I would NOT like it one bit!
Inside the Bowfin is amazing. Quite tight quarters to say the least and not exactly a cure for claustrophobia. I've been a few in my life and they're all quite narrow. The USS Intepid in NYC and another at the US Sub Base in Groton, CT. You just think how tough it is to be down there for days at a time. I know I couldn't do it!
Quite a variety on the menu, but I'm perplexed by the "Baked Luncheon Meat". I wonder what that is and perhaps I may not want to know?
