(This is Main Street by Angie, who is working on art goals here on the blog!)
This has been a personal project to blog every day for a school year on goals and dreams. My hope was that I could find a group of people to work with me.
I was lucky enough to find a small, but sincere group of inspirational people to keep me company. We've been using Walt Disney's philosophies or creations as inspiration.
I am no longer blogging daily, but I am notified if comments are posted, and I'll be happy to keep the discussion going!

Friday is a great day!

Friday is such a great day! It is like the big reward for making it through another work week.
Even though I have an early appointment tomorrow, there is something so great about a Friday night!
Of course, my early appointment is a choice. I'll be going bowling with three adorable kids! I could say that I am there to be nice and help, but the truth is that I'm there because it's alot of fun!
There is not a whole lot of difference between tomorrow's time with kids and my work time with kids. Both are fun, both are great ways to spend some time, BUT tomorrow I will not have goals.
Whenever I work, even if it is the most fun activity in the world, I always have to keep goals in mind. They may be goals in a treatment plan or in an individual education plan, but if I lose track of the goals for any amount of time, I'm not really doing my job.
Tomorrow I don't have an ethical responsibility to stick to anything except having fun with kids because I am not being a therapist. Even when I play at work-which, I have to admit, is most of my job- I still have to stick to a plan.
This daily blog is based pretty much on goals. I think, though, for the rest of tonight and for tomorrow, I am going to toss all the goals out the window and let the breeze blow wherever it will.
I wonder how THAT will go?

Boy oh boy can I relate to this entry. I live pretty much the same professional life as you. Despite the fact that almost everything I do with my kiddos is fun, if I'm not relating these activities to a goal then I'm not fulfilling my responsibility to that child. So enjoy bowling with the kiddos just for the sake of having fun - and don't worry about their gait or stance or balance or the amount of supination or pronation they have in their forearm before they let go of the ball. That's the hard part for me - letting go of all that. Good luck and can't wait to hear how you make out!0 Pixie Dust

I love the way another therapist (or teacher) can understand what I'm talking about. Bowling was AWESOME! It was so much fun to hang out and just enjoy the kiddies.
The school I work in has several bowling trips and I've tagged along once in a while. It is funny that I was able to "treat" the kids who had certain goals right at the alley, but kids who had computer or straight handwriting goals, I really couldn't "treat", even if I just spent unofficial time with them.
I'd never consciously realized that until today at bowling. I think we educators stucture ourselves around our goals, rules and guidelines without even thinking about it.0 Pixie Dust

Glad you had fun! You're right that we structure ourselves around goals. I have to laugh when I think about the great head control that my own children had very early on - and finding eldest DD at not quite 5 months old standing in her crib one day. Certainly has nothing to do with the kids being advanced - but everything to do with play being subconsciously structured around gross motor development. If I was a speech therapist instead of a PT, I bet they would have developed their language skills faster!0 Pixie Dust

therapist!!!???????? I didn't know you guys are one. I thought you were just special ed teachers. I had my share with them. I'm glad we are friends then lol I don't remember achieving a goal that was plan if there was one. Anyways I also attend to teach a bit even though I'm not at the school with the kids like at the movies or just in restaurants.0 Pixie Dust

I am an occupational therapist and a music therapist. DId you have some bad experiences, Todd? Remember that a good therapist HAS to push you a little further than comfort with your movement and your thinking. That is how we help. I always tell my kids (and my adults) that it takes more effort to make them frustrated and tired than it does to just let them slide by.0 Pixie Dust

Well I think it was more that they took me out of class to do that. I go to the Y with my father and he help me on the stationary bike and all. I also stand for 10 min it really helps. I guess it motivation, if patients are motivated to do the exercise I know they would try to achieve that goal. I had a goal to try to get dress faster and now I can do it within 10to15 min before it almost took me a half an hour. when I transfer from my chair to the driver set I'm a stronger and when driving I'm more focus when I gotten my exercise in.0 Pixie Dust

Yes, when services provided during the school day rather than privately, you have to consider that when you pull a student from a class, they miss something. On the other hand, when you provide services IN the classroom, you subject the student to being singled out as someone who has an adult hovering AND you just can't provide the same quality of certain individualized services during an in-class push-in session. We have to REALLY carefully evaluate what the needs are and if the needs justify some of the drawbacks.
I do pull-out and push-in in a school AND I do private practice at my house, and the services are so different from each other.
One of the best things about private therapy is creative freedom to create dynamic treatment plans that can turn on a dime if need be.
Oh, well, I digress. Sorry!0 Pixie Dust

I know just what you are talking about. I work with senior citizens who have Alzheimers and I have to think of new ways to plan activities so I could keep their interest up so they will not fall asleep on me. Bingo is on of those ways but, it is played often because i have to buy chocolate so they can get a prize.
During the week I go to school and weekends I work so friday nights are the most covented Girls Night Out. No matter how much I LOVE my job b/c most opf the time its not a job, i still need a night to unwind and throw all the plans to the wind and see where the chips fall. Sometimes, using that brillance the best idea comes to mind.0 Pixie Dust

(Here's me)
Working in Recreation is fun because your job is to help the people have fun. I used to do that, and I loved it!
Still, there is nothing like not having to do anything but relaxing on your own terms.0 Pixie Dust
