I was lucky enough to find a small, but sincere group of inspirational people to keep me company. We've been using Walt Disney's philosophies or creations as inspiration.

Home #4-15 minutes to hide items that don't fit the theme.
If you would spend 15 minutes today to create some sort of theme, what would that theme be? Are there any items visible that really don't fit? Can you find a place to stowe them while they are not in use?
Let's think about the Tunnel Approach, which refers to the way WDW uses tunnels to keep the themes just right. You very rarely see behind-the-scenes objects that disturb the mood.
Today, I'm going to reflect on this. Here is how I'm going to use my 15 minutes today...
I'm still working on the Sanctuary theme in my bedroom. I have a few empty drawers in my bedroom from the deep cleaning. I've decided to assign top drawers to the various items that I usually keep on surfaces, but which don't really need to be there.
Chapstick, moisturizer, my bedside reading books (usually three or four at a time), even the matches I use to light the candles.
So, today my fifteen minutes will be spent creating a designated space in the top drawers for those items, so they can be tucked away or seen quickly. I'm not talking about a junk drawer that has to be sifted through, though. I mean an organized surface underneath the visible surface, like the tunnels, to hide the distractions from the theme.

I'm a pretty organized person. I work full time and with 3 kids messes make me loco. I would go to wal-mart and get some of those small plastic basket they things. And place your small odds and end in it. Then place your books beside it. Its nice to have a relaxing bedroom. I painted mine blue because I read somewhere that was supposed to be a calming color. Thanks for the tip. I was actually thinking of repainting my room. It is already blue, but it was last painted over 10 years ago, and there are marks that don't come off now.0 Pixie Dust

Your room sounds beautiful 4Disney2. Mine is an oceanside cottage theme, but it is time to be redone as the paint and linens are fading. We are, however, forging ahead with our plans for that extra room our DS wants to move into, so I suppose I'll spend my 15 minutes clearing more clutter from there.0 Pixie Dust

Great post, Sandy.
Early this year I changed the color of my office from drab and dark forest green to bright, cheery and expansive sunflower yellow!! I no longer call it my office but my "creativity center" since I spend most of my time creating in this space. It's so interesting how color actually changes my mood, nearly instantly. Before when the walls were forest green I felt calm and quite relaxed in this space (which is what I longed for at the time I had originally painted it that color). But my desire for creative expression was bubbling up inside me and I longed for a space I could really call my own - so much so that other people look at the yellow walls and say "Oh, that's nice" in the most polite manner possible when they are probably thinking "OMG that's awful"
Oh well, it's my room. I'm the one who spends the most time in it and darnit... I like it!!!
P.s. One of the 4 walls in my office is still forest green but that's only because I didn't want to move the heavy furniture/wall unit - I call it my "accent wall"!

Doreen, a creativity room is such a great idea. Do you actually have more success creating in this particular room?
drabbito, you really do your homework, don't you? I can't wait to hear if your desk organizers end up helping you. Have you thought of a theme word for this area?
I was so excited when I opened this up and saw so many people moving along with this. I also have to tell you that it was WONDERFUL to wake up to my Sanctuary room.
I am so amazed at how choosing a theme word pulled the whole room together for me.

I love the idea of using a top drawer as a hidden surface space. That reminds me - I still need a new nightstand for my bedroom. dh doesn't really use one so there is a side table on his side of the bed. But I like the look of a nightstand. The one I'm using now is very old - it's the one my dh's grandfather made for him when he was little. It's got a drawer, and then two cabinet doors underneath with a shelf inside. The long-range plan has for a while been to give this one to ds, and replace it with a store-bought one for me. I picked one out a few months back, but it was at the same time we were remodeling the den so the bedroom items were put on hold. Maybe soon, though. Especially if it's just a nightstand since that by itself wouldn't cost too much money. (Eventually I want to replace the entertainment center which is open on the front - showing lots of clutter - with an armoire where the doors can be shut to hide all of that.)0 Pixie Dust

Home theme #4-take two
This is actually interesting, because this step is exactly what I need to do today!
I really put alot of work in yesterday. I have a home office that I write off, so I have YEARS of utility bills and phone bills that I save. I can't believe how many things used to have your social security number on them! I also saved check stubs and time sheets. Well, yesterday I must have been shredding for HOURS just to get rid of up to 2002! Sometimes, when you are focusing on everything in its place, the place is the trash can.
I also spend about two minutes to hang a clock. This is pretty simple stuff, here.
I finally put away a bag of items that needed to be removed from the bedroom because they did not fit with the sanctuary theme.
Long story short, I worked ALL DAY, but the surfaces are still strewn with a few odds and ends.
So, that is today's job. To create a folder or a drawer so my desk top can remain relatively clear unless I take something out.
It has worked pretty well for the bedroom so far.0 Pixie Dust

I spent quite a bit of time on this today. I finally just took the odds and ends that were left off all visible surfaces and threw them into a bag.
I think that the bag dump made a big difference and all I need to do now is decide where to fit the items with my theme a place for everything, and everything in its place.0 Pixie Dust
